  • "Went for an early dinner after day of shopping. Pretty empty when we arrived at 5:30, but almost full when we left around 7. Food was great, we really liked the wood-fired pizzas. Seemed like they were done within 5 min. of ordering. "

  • "Definitely a touristy place, but it's a good compromise when we're downtown & my husband wants pizza (always) & I want more variety. I left behind a very expensive (gifted) pair of sunglasses on Saturday, called on Sunday morning & described in great deal the sunglasses & was told by the hostess that she had them. When I went to go get them, she tried to hand me a completely different, cheap pair. Then she said she must have gotten the description confused. Huh? I would have believed them if they said in the morning that they didn't have them, maybe another patron walked off with them or something. But for them to vanish in thin air I don't believe. Obviously I won't be returning. Manager was not helpful."

  • "We entertained some friends from NYC and took them to Bar Toma where we had had a previously great time. The wait staff was pushy, rude and not helpful. Food was of the highest quality and portions were of reasonable size except the salmon which seemed small and was served with a bizarre side. The zuppa de pesce and lasagna were excellent and the christina salad was good but needs to be served on a larger plate so as to facilitate eating it without creating a garden of spinach on the table. Food is now teetering on the edge of expensive and less of a good value than when they first opened. "

  • "We went with a group of 6 and had a great experience, with a good list of choices on the menu for folks with a range of tastes (more traditional pepperoni pizza to unique salads and entrees). We also got the round table we requested, which was helpful. All in all, a great experience in an otherwise tough/touristy restaurant neighborhood (2 blocks from the Hancock building)."

  • "I was hoping to be more impressed by this restaurant - the acclaimed chef would lead you to think that you would get more than a glorified pizza joint. Doesn't Chicago have enough of these? This place is very meat and cheese heavy - so hard to find a health conscience choice. I went with the roasted carrots and a shrimp salad - which were tasty, but incredibly salty. Another person at our table ordered the lasagna which isn't at all like the traditional dish, but more like a huge lump of salty cheese with a noodle on top. Overall, I wouldn't recommend to anyone as there are many other better places nearby."

  • "service was great food was good but not great. Pizza's were average had a few other appetizer items and some Papperdalle with ragu which was good but very expensive for very small portion. I guess overall I would go back but order an entrée rather than all the small plates the prices climb real fast when you order them. 3 people 1 bottle of chianti a few apps and 2 small pizzas 160.00 before tip"

  • "Based on the menu and prices, we chose this restaurant for a birthday dinner and expected a more upscale experience. The food lived up to expectations, but the many TVs and casual tourist-types dumbed it down. (We were tourists too, but we dressed for dinner) I would definitely go back for the foie gras/pate appetizer!"

  • "We were in town on a getaway and were staying in the neighborhood. We are so glad we found this great Italian find. The dishes we had (lasangna and I can't remember pasta) were amazing. The food tasted wonderful and the plating was perfect. Since we were on vacation, we splurged and got the Chocolate Torta for desert . It was fantastic! Our server was great and the atmosphere was a mix between an Italian eatery and a sports bar. We didn't mind the few TVs on the wall. We will be eating here again when we're in town again!"

  • "We decided on Bar Toma very last minute. We were in Chicago from the Milwaukee area for a get-away weekend and decided to cancel our reservation at a steakhouse since we were a little tired from sight-seeing all day and wanted something more relaxing. Luckily, we were seated right across from a television with the Wisconsin NCAA tournament game on! Our waitress Marissa was excellent. She suggested delicious Sangria for drinks and gave us great guidance with our entrees. She knew we wanted to watch the game so she never rushed us, but was still very attentive. Will be back when we are in Chicago. Oh yes, and the food was DELICIOUS!"

  • "I went to Bar Toma for a business lunch with colleagues who work near there. Everything we ordered was wonderful. Unfortunately, because it was a work lunch, we did not order any of the small plates (they all sounded terrific), but the salads and pasta that we ordered were fantastic. The waiter was attentive without being overbearing. I hope I get a chance to go back. The only downside was that it was fairly noisy for lunch/the number of people there."

  • "Interesting menu with solid apps and terrific salads... pizzas are also above average.... but the pasta dishes were very bland. The Cacio e Pepe pasta we ordered was actually made without pepper (the key ingredient) and was made with very little cheese. The waiter added pepper at the table. This left the dish tasting watery - which was ashame as the pasta was perfect. Desserts are very good as well... but the service was so poor it was hard to really enjoy. If not for the manager stepping in and basically taking over for a clueless waiter (who kept apologizing for not being able to pronounce the dishes on the menu) the evening would have been a wash. We'll go back, but next time it will be drinks/pizza at the bar on a Saturday afternoon."

  • "first time here but have wanted to try it for many months. was not disappointed. they were out of grilled octopus so we had the calamari instead. it was great. lots of capers. tried a white pizza that was a bit bland so asked for dried peppers. followed with the pappardelle and loved it. finished with the bread pudding which was overly lemon and forgettable, really an enjoyable meal and will definitely go back."

  • "I was pleasantly surprised by Bar Toma. Being so close to Michigan Ave and the exterior make it feel like a chain restaurant that is going to have more generic food...but that was not the case. We had a great server who made great recommendations. He suggested some duck sausage skewers that he said were not ordered as much and were going to be removed from the menu. They were awesome... delicious with a sauce that was wonderful. The grilled carrots were also wonderful. We went on a weekday so maybe that's why it was so quiet but I would highly recommend."

  • "What can I say? The pizza dough is so tasty you'd love it without toppings. Ask for panel - chickpea polenta fried (but not heavy) with side of marinara. Melts in your mouth. Christina Salad is spot on. Trust your waiter for suggestions. And as for the manager (he looks like Ray Liotta, but in a kind way)...he could not have been more welcoming or genuinely making sure we had a great experience."

  • "It was easy to bemoan the fact that this space lost the great Bistro 110 but Bar Toma is a fabulous replacement. Their pizzas cannot be beat. The kale salad has so much "stuff" on it that it may not be the healthiest starter but is amazingly good. They provide a description of the wines by the glass which is very helpful in making a choice. If only every restaurant did so. The manager stopped at our table and made us feel special."

  • "My husband and I went here Valentine's weekend and it was perfect for a casual-but-sophisticated dinner. Our server was very nice and told us that we could share everything on the menu. We ordered the grilled octopus, margherita pizza, and beef short ribs, which were all very good, but the best part was the tiramisu for dessert, which was the best I've ever tasted!"

We gave a bunch a shot since they do small plates and it was hit or miss. Some we're fantastic, while others were kind of weird. Overall, it was a good experience and we were full.   • "My son had the pizza and I had the pasta and bolognese sauce. The sauce was very salty for my palette. My son loved the pizza. We have travelled the world eating pizza including in Paris, Milano, Alessandria, Rome, Napoli, Pompei, New York, Baltimore and yes Chicago. Bar Toma's pizza is really good but the service is even better. Thanks Jeff for being such an attentive server."

  • "We visited this restaurant a few weeks ago and were really impressed by the food (Burrata appetizer) and pizza. We went last night to celebrate a birthday and service was unenthusiastic, food arrived haphazardly (the Burrata arrived when our main courses did), the pizza was already cold, and the bread which arrived with the Burrata quickly lost its heat since we were focused on the pizza. The waiter seemed more concerned with pawning off another drink and was completely oblivious to the birthday, which was told to him (plus he "checked" our IDs). This is the inverse from our first experience at this restaurant. Go a couple blocks down the street to Cafe Spiaggia. Drop this place."
