Diner Reviews
  • "I have eaten here several times and always enjoyed my meal and time here. My dish of veal with shrimp was not quite as good as the usual cooking but that won't prevent me from returning. "

  • "Bar Italia is always superior in the multi- flavors present in their dishes. Creative and delicious. The service on this particular occasion was wonderful . . . we had our 22 month old granddaughter with us. She has allergies which the chef handled with aplomb and grace. Everyone was pleasant and cheerful in helping us. Thank you!!!"

  • "It has been a long time since we have been out in the Central West End and we needed some Italian since we were carbo loading for the Go Marathon. While our meal was just fine, this place is just nothing real special. It seems a little run down, the décor feels cheap and was really not that memorable. The food was good and our server did an excellent job but we couldn't get past how cheap the place felt. With CWE being such a trendy, hip place now, they need to get with the program and bring it up a notch."

  • "Service was a little awkward, but we got plenty of attention, drinks refilled, etc. The food was REALLY good, way better than I expected. The inside of the place could definitely use some sprucing up. I don't really feel like there's a theme, just some tables and chairs thrown together where there is room. The atmosphere feels a little strange, and it was quite noisy for not having many people inside. If you're going strictly for the meal, this is the place to go. If you are going for the atmosphere, this probably isn't the place for you. Also, they were out of our first 3 drink options, which was a little disappointing, but not a big deal. I would think on a Friday night they would be a little more prepared though."

  • "This was one of the best meals I have ever had in a restaurant. Our waiter did a excellent job of describing the entrees and recommended a great bottle of wine in our price point."

  • "I ordered the special, seared scallops with shrimp and spinach on top of egg noodles in a spicy garlic tomato sauce. Excellent, just the right spice. Presentation was nice. Food was just the right temp. Excellent service too!"

  • "Decent place for Italian dinner; a little over priced for the quality and quantity. Expected a little more authentic Italian than it was. Beef carpaccio mediocre; mussels moderate; salad good. But again for the quantity and the quality is overpriced. I had a group on which made it worth it. Much better cheaper places in STL for better Italian food. Wouldn't go there on a regular basis. Service was very good. Surprised we did not get offered grated parmesan cheese for our olive oil mix for our bread (which I had to specifically ask for); we did not get offered pepper on our salad-these are not huge things but just things I expect of a decent restaurant and was surprised when I was not offered either. Too many good rest. to return here."

  • "Bar Italia is the most consistently good restaurant in St. Louis. The service is wonderful and it is clear that the servers are invested in the quality of the restaurant."

  • "I have always loved Bar Italia..but will not go back. They have really slipped. Food I almost would say was not even fair."

  • "We've lived in the CWE for 8 years and never ate here, instead opting for Italian eateries on the hill; our mistake! The food was great and the service was impeccable. Multistory with areas that feel very private, even though you're in a larger room with other diners. Definitely won't be our last time here!"

  • "Interesting menu. More european than italian. Enjoyed the unique cocktails, and the food was good - nicely prepared, and interesting flavors. Seated in the bar, which lacks ambience, but the best seating is in the West part of the restaurant, either street level, or better yet, upstairs."

  • "Food was very good...service was slow and inatentive.. We had to flag someone to get water refills and we sat there quite a while before someone greeted us and gave us water initially. I also had to pour our wine after initial pour. I am used to servers making an effort to continue to pour the wine as a part of wine service. I dont think our waitress was familiar with wine service from start to finish. The wine was really good though! I would definitely recommend this to someone food wise."

  • "We sat on the outdoor patio which was covered because it is winter, but very large and very warm. There were lots of couples dining as well as a large group."

  • "The food we ordered was very good, except our reservation was at 9PM and by then they were already out of steak, chicken, and ravioli's! We had to order our 4th choice on the menu, something that is pretty unacceptable for such a nice restaurant on Valentine's Day. I understand the high volume but I think they should have been more prepared. Carlos was great and the service was great, we just wish we could have eaten what we wanted!"

  • "Sat in the tented area with heat lamps...not a great dining experience. Slow service, but the food was good"

  • "Food and service very good. Staff was very accommodating when had to delay arrival on a busy evening. Only slight downside was being seated in the patio area on a cold night. Despite good efforts and ample heating, it was hard to keep the space at a comfortable temperature. Very unseasonable temps, so a bit unexpected, but it did detract from the experience just a touch."

  • "We hadn't been to Bar Italia for many years, but had a dining coupon so went back. We are so glad we did, and hope to return soon. We forgot how great the food is! Everything was delicious...from the cocktails to the dessert. They have the best tortellini in St. Louis, and maybe anywhere else (not drenched in thick sauce like at so many other places). The house salad was lightly dressed with lemon and olive oil. The limoncello cake was outstanding! A perfect meal!"

  • "All four of us enjoyed our meal at Bar Italia as we always do. The food & service are outstanding."

  • "My boyfriend and I enjoyed a nice, early evening Valentine's Day dinner at Bar Italia. Servers were helpful and efficient. Food was delicious (lobster ravioli and a chicken dish) and drinks were nice (nothing mixed- just wine and beer). Though it was a busy night, we never felt rushed by the staff."

  • "Bar Italia has been around for a long time but it remains a fresh, wonderful place to eat. The food is always delicious, the service attentive, and the vibe is cool. Our group of 7 had a great time."

  • "We always have a good experience at Bar Italia. Pork tenderloin dish was excellent!"

  • "Food is good but at about twice the price of comprable fare at other Italian restaurants. They have a great outside venue for warm weather but the inside of the restaurant lacks any personality whatsoever. Service was very good."
    Dined on 1/23/2014
  • "The food here is very good. My wife had the porkchop and it was perferctly done and very tasty. I had the scallop and shrimp with pasta. It was also very good. The wine selection is mostly Italian with a pretty good selection of by the glass moderately priced wines. Will go again. Parking is a bit of a hassle near the restaurant so you might wind up having to walk a block or two"

  • "FOOD AND DRINKS WERE GREAT! Going back this weekend!"

  • "Food and service are always dependably good, especially the cheese torttalini. Ambiance is lacking for colder weather but in summer they have a great outdoor patio that is also good for people watching."

  • "Not sure I would return except in warmer weather to experience and enjoy the patio. Indoor dining ambience is lacking."

  • "We dined at Bar Italia on NYE. My Fiance and I enjoyed the food. Everything was prepared well. That being said, the rest of our dining experience was awful. I did not get my drink re-filled once during our meal. Then the waiter came by and took the plate and told me he would bring the bill at the end after we waited a long time for it. My Fiance and I were stunned. We were ignored by our waiter. Even though it was NYE, he had 4 tables....he focused on the other 3. I am 27, and so he must have thought I did not have much money or something due to my age and focused on others. We left insulted but full I suppose. The food was good, and I would like to eat there again, but I just have a hard time paying $70-80 for that service."

  • "We chose Bar Italia for New Year's Eve almost at the last minute. Reservation was easy, and the service, food and timing of the dishes arriving at our table were all perfect. This meal was quite special and smooth. A nice touch was being greeted by the owners and then being asked again as we left how we enjoyed the evening. We could not have asked for a better dining experience."

  • "We are a family of varied diets - from vegan to low sodium to no pork to allergies - and everyone left fully and yummily satisfied and ready to return for more! And we needed a quiet corner due to hearing problems of our octogenarian. No problems! All was easy and smooth, food was delicious and interesting, service good and good ambience. The wines were luscious, too. Highly recommended!"

  • "We've enjoyed Bar Italia for almost 30 years now. It is still one of our favorite spots for a summer evening meal on the beautiful patio. We don't dine here much in the winter time though. The interior of the restaurant is not as sophisticated or as beautiful as some of the newer offerings in town. HOWEVER, our Christmas eve dinner reminded me of why I love Bar Italia and why, even in winter, this is a great place to dine . Our dinner was sophisticated in that simple, elegant way that a dinner in Rome or Tuscany is sophisticated. All it takes is good wine, fresh ingredients, and a perfect preparation that respects the food. Not to mention the expertly-prepared espresso to finish it off. Thank you, Bar italia. So lovely."

  • "Chicken Breast in Red Balsamic Sauce was excellent. Generous portion. Fresh mixed vetables were crisp and tasty. I would order it again. My friend who ordered the pasta with three kinds of mushrooms enjoyed it very much. Italian red wine was very good."

  • "Our visit but we will definitely be returning. Atmosphere, service and food were all excellent. Appetizers ordered includedat the bruschettal &he'll goat cheese, both werecould fantastic. Main courses ordered at our table included the lamb, steak, pasta and the nightly special which was red snapper. All were very, very good. The vegetable accompaniments were cooked to perfection, so much so that my 16family yr old who NEVER eats cooked vegetables ate them on his own accord. We had the mousse, tortr and gelato for dessert and they were superb. My only complaint was the torte was still too cold to eat and cut."

  • "Bar Italia still has an attractive garden, and for a summer drink outside would fit the bill. Our winter dinner was atrocious. Despite booking two weeks ahead for a party of 6, we were seated in an annex next to their nightclub. The room was ugly, the traffic was high, and the server was polite but disappeared for long stretches. All of that can be overcome with excellent food, but sadly the menu was not up to the task. There seems to be a preponderance of bell peppers, usually a sign of cost cutting in the kitchen. A veal dish was tough as leather; an interesting sounding chicken was drowned in a black balsamic reduction, as unpleasant to the eye as it was to the tongue. Plenty of other options on the West End - go to any of them."

  • "The service was inattentive and unbearably slow. A request for parmesan cheese was ignored and it took an eternity to get our bill. This was a favorite but no longer"

  • "This place was great. The food was fantastic, specials were outstanding. Convenient, right in the heart of the CWE. Parking was difficult (went on a Saturday night). Didn't like the Diva drink, but the Madori drink was on point! Will definately be back."

  • "Excellent modern Italian bistro with a nice selection of Italian dishes prepared in non-traditional manner. Very creative approach to Italian food, but not so original that it's unappealing. Service was particularly helpful, friendly, and caring."

  • "Our group of 6 had a wonderful experience. We loved the atmosphere and the ability to be able to talk and hear each other. The service was very good. Each of us had a different entrée and they all were fabulous. I think it was one of the best pasta dishes that I have had."

  • "Chose this restaurant because of its proximity to our hotel in CWE, and because of the helpful comments in UrbanSpoon. It was exactly what we expected. We were seated upstairs with a view of the street scene below. It was quieter, more intimate there. Our server was helpful, attentive (although focused on the upsell). Food was marvelous - had a goat cheese encrusted with pistachios as a appetizer; wife had a seafood pappardelle special, I had Sicilian fettuccine - both dishes perfectly prepared and attractively presented. Accompanied my dish with a glass of Valpolicella which was a pleasant surprise at the price. We would definitely return if in the area again."

  • "Having dined at BAR ITALIA many times in the last few months, I am always pleased with the food choices, the presentation, and the creative, flavorful entrees. The food is served hot and prepared as I have requested. My compliments to the chef for the unusual combinations to give my taste buds a treat. Another reason that I enjoy coming to Bar Italia is that Kelli Kennedy always makes me feel like a very special guest. Thank you all for such a memorable dining experience."
