Diner Reviews
  • "Wonderful French food. Excellent flavors. Great presentation."

  • "The Banana Café is am amazing restaurant. We went on a week night at about 9:15 pm and it was fairly quiet since we were dining so late. Our waitress was unbelievable and very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and all the specials. My husband had a seafood crepe which he raved about and my children and I had a mahi special with scallops and shrimp which was unbelievable. I would recommended this restaurant in a heartbeat to anyone looking for an excellent meal with superb service."

  • "Had the mussels and found them as good as the ones in Bruge that I still dream about. My friend had the snapper salad special with sesame cilantro dressing which was also superb. And I know from many years as a local that the creeps are wonderful."

  • "Good to make reservations for bigger groups as only one big table but it was so worth it. I had the daily special of grouper and corn risotto. It was one of the best meals I've had in a while. The fish was perfect and the flavors were just so amazing. Also their crepes are very good. I was back the next morning to have breakfast!"

  • "Brunch food is outstanding. The first time for dinner and the "special" was bland. Other foods on the menu chosen by others at the table were excellent. So, I imagine my experience with the special was out of the ordinary. The ambience is very nice and service was excellent."

  • "A wonderful dining experience. We live in Key West and don't go out all that much, but when we do, Banana's is one of our favorites. Wonderful & well trained wait staff, great food & perfect presentation."

  • "Enjoyed the window seat. Window was open so it actually felt like you were eating outside. Pleasant and yet entertaining as we watched people walk down the street. Waiter was very helpful and tomato soup was delightful! Loved the butter with herb infused olive oil. Nice touch. Try it out, you won't be disappointed. Can't wait to go back."

  • "We chose banana cafe for our first dinner in Key West. I read the reviews on Open Table and was a little concerned about having dinner there since it is known for it's breakfast menu. But once we sat down I was surprised by how intimate the cafe was. It was dimly lit and the windows were all open so it was cool inside. Our waiter was so friendly and was helpful in choosing appetizers and wine. We chose the cheese plate, lobster ravioli, lobster Mac, asparagus with goat cheese and proscuitto and the seafood salad. Everything was delicious and we were satisfied with the portions. The waiter helped us pack up whatever food we had left over and we were on our way! Great meal and service!"

  • "Fun to sit along Duval Street to people watch. French food was good but not outstanding (sauces overwhelmed the entrees). Service was excellent. Still all being said a good restaurant choice while in Key West."

  • "I went to dinner with a few friends and sat upstairs in the open air. I love French food and this place is a gem. I had heard good things and finally decided to try it! I got the duck and my friends had the seafood crepe, chicken, and scallops. I tasted some of the other dishes and it was delicious! I think the duck was the most bang for your buck. It's a ton of food! Good time!"

  • "always great food! very lucky to have B/C half a block from out house... though, we'd cross the island just for the food."

  • "Enjoyed an excellent dinner on the second floor outside seating area overlooking Duval Street. The escargot were well prepared as were our scallop and beef bourguignon entrees. The wine list was very good with all price ranges. The staff was professional and knowledgeable. All in all a great dining experience. We look forward to returning to try other offerings."

  • "There are quite a few great restaurants in Key West, and yet the Banana Cafe stands out as one of the best. The food was excellent, both very tasty and presented well. Plus, our waiter was quite congenial, adding to the overall excellent experience."

  • "Despite wonderful service from a friendly and energetic waitress the meal was disappointing. We waited a very long time for the appetisers which came just minutes before the entrees. The waitress did have the entrees redone as we weren't ready for them. The food was just okay despite many glowing reviews. The lobster tempura special was good but not memorable. The key lime pie dessert was horrible."

  • "The casual and ordinary exterior disguise the intimacy and the quality of the classic french food and service inside. We had a wonderful Valentine dinner with a bottle of Sancerre, served by Tom, a well-informed and professional waiter. We had the cheese plate, the duck, the special, which was a tower of fois gras, lobster and beef tenderloin, and apple tart with ice cream for dessert. It was our best meal to date in Key West. While it is not cheap, it is a real value. Helpings are large, especially for authentic french dishes prepared on this level. It compares well to the best of New Orleans and St. Barth. Like every place here, there were people in tee shirts and running shoes, but the crowd was dressier overall and comfortable."

  • "After an outstanding breakfast on our last trip, we decided to try it for dinner. Reservations are a must after 7! We started our meal splitting the daily Pate at the suggestion of our server, Maxime, followed by the Field Greens and Hearts of Palm Salad. The home made Pate was accompanied by cornichons, red onion marmalade, mustard and artisanal baguette. The salad was crisp and fresh and lightly dressed. My wife selected Pan Roasted Mahi for her entrée while I selected the Veal Shank special. Neither was disappointed. We usually forgo the dessert, but when in France…Crème Brule. WOW. Outdoor seating is available on the second floor veranda. Reservations are a must, especially on the week-end. We will be back on our next Key West trip."

  • "Our concierge recommended this restaurant as one of her favorites.it is a few blocks away from all the tourist restaurants on Ducal and well worth the walk. Food was very well prepared, wines excellent, wait staff friendly and professional, decor very pleasant. Go there. You won't be disappointed."

  • "I have visited Key West off and on for 30 years but had never seen, heard of or stumbled upon the Banana Cafe until I was looking over restaurant listings before this trip. This restaurant is a wonderful gem: intimate, cozy, friendly and serving wonderful French cuisine. The waitress was most willing to share some useful information about a patron at an adjoining table - a notable local musician - whose group was performing at another restaurant the following night. She gave me the relevant information which led to my dining there and hearing his band. Overall, I had a great meal and may decide to return there later this week for another meal."

  • "The dinner was much appreciated in the Key West world of sometimes over the top sauces and attempts at out besting each other. Good food, not overly rich. Lunch was fresh though a bit pricey. Ate there in 2013 will eat there in 2015."

  • "While vacationing in Key West we decided to try Banana Cafe. What a find! Never expected to find classic French cuisine with a local twist. My husband says his seafood crepe was the best he had ever eaten. The staff was very attentive and was very knowledgable. On our next visit we will definitely return."

  • "The good was so good that we ate there two days in a row. There special the first day was a pan fried snapper over a shrimp risotto. That was delicious. Our waitress was kind enough to let us try a couple of different wines until we found one that we liked. Also the royal palm hearts salad was very well planned out. It was a good combination of light, creamy and refreshing."

  • "We booked our New Years eve dinner - as it was very busy, we could only get a table at 8:45 and when we arrived, we were pointed at a table in the corner, nearly behind the bar. After some discussion, we got a slightly better table. The food was ok - standard good french fare, but nothing exceptional. It was a set menu (4 courses) but at the desert, we were told that they no longer had key lime pie (strange they did not know this when we ordered). The waitress was very good although we felt the 20% automatic service charge a bit steep. Overall acceptable food for a pricy dinner."

  • "People watching from the windows of the Banana Cafe is pretty amazing but you can get this sort of a view from a hundred other great places on Duval Street. The decor looks a bit out dated and worn so it's easy to think this might just be another Duval street tourist trap. What sets this place apart is the food. OMG What a great little french bistro! Our server was friendly and fantastic as well. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in Key West!"

  • "My husband and I are vacationing in the Florida Keys. I found this place on open table & we decided to give it a try. There are so many places to eat in a Key West - the choices can be overwhelming. The dinner special was pan fried yellowtail snapper. I had the yellowtail snapper from the regular menu & my husband had the special. Both dishes we so very good. His snapper came with risotto and mine with gnocchi. The fish and sides were cooked perfectly. The risotto was so good, the gnocchi was delicious. Outstanding service, great food, charming setting. We will not hesitate to return."
