Balaban's continues the tradition of the Cental West End location with a new concept in Chesterfield. Balaban's operates full service restaurant and retail wine shop with the same classic dishes such as the Beef Wellington, Cucumber Bisque and Trout Pancake. All of the bottles on the Wine Spectator's award winning wine list are sold at a retail cost with a small $8 corkage fee.Continued

  • "We love going to Balabans in Chesterfield, the food is never bad, always interesting and delicious. The wine is to purchase off the rack in the restaurant and for $8 they cork it for you at the table, or bar. There is a small patio for outdoor dining. Always friendly, always good. "

  • "Now that Balabans has moved to west county, we go there with some regularity. They have creative food and retail wine that you can buy and pay only an additional corkage fee to enjoy with dinner. This time I had the sea bass special which was wonderful. My spouse enjoys the various flat breads, and no one doesn't like the beef Wellington. They have lovely desserts as well. Atmosphere is pretty casual given the prices, but still a fun evening."

  • "We have eaten here several times. This time, we joined some friends. We had a special bottle of wine we wanted to try, which they stocked. The Owner came by to decant it for us. The service was great. The specials were wonderful and they let me substitue side for my seafood entree. We had a great time!"

  • "They really had no red wine bottles to choose from but they have a store full of wine. I wanted a red wine to go with dinner. I asked the server do we just pick a bottle and she said yes. What she did not say is that they charge you for the bottle (expected), but they charge you $8 to uncork it. Then to put it on the bill with the food and tip on top of that. This location should not charge to uncork a bottle of wine. It was pretty irritating to me. The food was good but I might think about returning just because of the additional charge. The more I think about it I should have only left her a tip on the meal."

  • "When this restaurant first need, we tried it for dinner....not at all like the Balabans of old....so why use the name?? Also I was SO disappointed in the wine by the glass selection back then. Many moons later, a friend & I tried it for lunch....no wine this time so I can't comment on whether that has improved but the service was SO much better & the food really good! I now look forward to coming back at another try for dinner!"

  • "My husband and I wanted to stay close to home for a mid-week birthday outing - often saying there's no place that's unique and intimate in "strip mall" West Cty purgatory. Balaban's fit the bill for delicious 'small plates' and good wines (altho' my husband did have an entree). Appetizers were delicious and different; my hearts of palm salad was out of this world. We liked the wine flights (just enough selection to make it interesting). I had the lobster ravioli (an appetizer but substantial enough for an entree) which was delectable. Our server, Jasmine, was very personable and accommodating, as was the owner/mgr, who stopped by to check on our experience. We'll definitely be back. Next time we'll peruse the retail wine selections!"

  • "Had reservations for Valentines day. Arrived and was seated in extra event space next to service entrance to kitchen. Sat at what seemed to be foldable extra event table with table cloth. Steak was not cooked to order. Waitress did not check in how food was until a good amount of time later so by that time I was tired of waiting and ate my steak even though not cooked correctly. Ambience was brightly lit, loud, high traffic right by kitchen door. Absolutely not romantic. Feels like just tried to book as many reservations as possible and gave up quality for quantity. Way to expensive for quality of food."

  • "We dined on Valentines evening. The food was terrific. We ate from the Valentines Day Menu. The steak and filet were tender and very juicy. Excellent taste. The sun dried tomato soup had a wonderful. We have eaten there before on VDay and were not disappointed. My only complaint was it was darned cold inside. I kept my feet off the floor to try and stay warm but what can you do when we are having a cold cold STL winter."

  • "The atmosphere was a mix between small neighborhood restaurant, a pub and a wine store... not "romantic" or intimate, but pleasant, open and friendly atmosphere. An unexpected "find" given its location. Food was very good! The Beef Wellington was very tasty and cooked to my asking, Medium Rare (difficult to do as they usually come out "well done"). Filet Oscar was also very nicely done. We were able to select from very large selection of wines on open racks in restaurant/store with varying prices. Overall, prices were reasonable given the quality of the food! Service was very nice - friendly, casual, yet attentive. Very much enjoyed our evening!"

  • "The Valentine special menu was exceptional - the lobster Thermidor was especially notable. We were allowed to order off the regular menu if we wanted, so my companion ate the exceptional oysters. We were seated in the new events room, so a little ambiance was lost. Even though we ordered our entire meals within 5 minutes of arriving, our entire 3 course meal (plus a half loaf of bread which we had to pay for, but we were hungry!), down to getting our credit card back after payment took 2 hours, our entree not arriving until 70 minutes in. This was the only downside of the evening, which we wrote off as due to being booked solid."

  • "It had been a while since we're last here. That was not a great experience. Tonight showed they really own it. Servers and the support members are all appropriately attentive and polished, no stupid questions. Steve helped my wife select a great Pinot noir and educated us on the region. Food was done really well. I was really happy we came back and look forward to the next visit."

  • "Consistency is a key to good restaurant. As it was at Central West End it is in Chesterfield now, consistently very good restaurant . Food is delicious , prices are reasonable, and if you enjoy wine, I in a right place. Staff always helpful and gear to please. Definite 5* for me. Casual dinning at its best"
