Diner Reviews
  • "This place was great. Loved the spicy tuna crispy rice appetizer. Wasn't a huge fan of the bonsai roll, but my boyfriend liked it. Love the back patio area. It's enclosed, and just the right temperature for a 7pm dinner in San Diego. Very pleased with our visit. Will definitely be returning. "

  • "I had a perfect Birthday dinner Friday night, with 9 of my friends. I absolutely love this place!! The sushi bar is so much fun, as well as their upstairs covered patio. They can host small or large parties. The food is amazing, and so is the entire staff of chefs, hostesses, servers, etc.. This is my 3rd year of having my birthday dinner there. I have had a small group and two large groups. I get the same, wonderful service each time! Highly recommend!!"

  • "Horrible seating; not a decent table in the house. Regardless of table seated at, half of the party is facing a wall. All tables are way too close to each other; no privacy or peace. Been here numerous times and have tried but just can't do it ever again; will never be back. What a shame because the food is fresh and delicious. Waiter was overwhelmed. Very, very inappropriately loud customers that evening that should not have been ignored by management."

  • "Excellent quality fish and nice space but horrible service. Went there for lunch today with 6 people. It would be fine if you want to share food and eat over the course of an hour or more. We all ordered our own meal and they brought 2 people's food and then 20 minutes later 2 more and then 20 minutes later one more and finally an hour after the first person I got my food. Everybody was long done! I was never asked if I want another drink or how everything was. That's why it only gets 2 stars."

  • "We always go there and always have received good service. This one time we went for dinner, the service was slow."

  • "Every time we dine at Azuki we are treated like old friends. The fish is always fresh and delicious, and they are very concerned about sustainability. We are mostly fans of sashimi but their rolls are fabulous--not heavy on the rice. Do your taste buds a favor and dine at Azuki Sushi Lounge!"

  • "We were going to a business in the area so we were looking for a sushi restaurant close by. There were several to choose from but my daughter chose this one and we're so glad she did. We made reservations for the beginning of there dinner service. At first glance, from the street, it seems to be a tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant however, it was more spacious than it looked. Just inside you'll find a nice sushi bar and cozy lounge area. The real hidden gem however, is the spacious, mostly enclosed, outdoor patio dining area, where we ate. The service was excellent. The staff was friendly & knowledgeable. The food & beverage selection was excellent. The food was OUTSTANDING! We will definitely eat here again and recommend to friends/family."

  • "First time customers. We sat at the bar and the chef was great! Made a coupe of recommendations which were really good! Great food and service! We will be back very soon!"

  • "While Azuki is a passable sushi bar, it's not a great one. The fish is not outstanding or fabulously fresh, at least when I was there. And fresh fish should have been the order of the day: it was Valentine's Day. The people were nice, the presentation good, prices were not too bad, but no dedicated Japanese sushi chef would be proud to put his name on it. Lots of rolls of various types, but only passable nigiri. If you don't have much experience with sushi, you'll probably love the place. But if you've been to Japan, or lived in cities like LA ad SF, and eaten at spots like Sushi Nozawa, Matsuhisa, Sushi-Ran, or the former Kabuto, you'll not be likely to make this your first choice."

  • "My wife was craving a great date night with top notch sushi and Azuki delivered. Even though it was V-Day abd was late for reservations we were seated immediately. This is a neighborhood gem nestled in Bankers Hill. Great food and attentive staff. Will be back soon. Thank you!"

  • "Azuki's ambiance and service was excellent. We loved our server and the busboy was always there to refill our waters. The food was very good, especially the fatty salmon sashimi and spicy tuna crispy rice. The 2 special rolls were very good, sunshine and one other but wasn't blown away. We tried the hamachi collarbone and it was tasty but low flavor. Overall we had an amazing time though!"

  • "Amazing food, wonderful ambience and convient to all the San Diego Downtown venues (Symphony Hall, Civic Theater, Gaslamp and Convention Center). That's why we keep coming back. Thank you, Azuki!"

  • "One of my favorite places for lunch or dinner. The food is always fresh and delicious. Love the salmon and risotto. Also love the tempura, light and not greasy. Sushi is always beautiful and creative."

  • "Azuki never lets us down, we always make sure to put in our reservation for the sushi bar. Tsukasa always crafts delicious dishes for us, we always leave with a smile and we usually can't wait to go back. The service/staff is always spot on and we have never had a problem in the 3 years we have been coming here. My tastebuds and I highly recommend Azuki."

  • "Sushi was loose and fell apart. They kept projecting a movie of a chef against the wall all night repeating every 30 minutes the light was blinding and the flickering gave my wife a headache, could not hear anything but the movie track - ambience zero. Dozens of better sushi places in the area."

  • "Food is very good. Cozy place. Excellent for a date night. Food not strong enough to warrant a 5, but it is very, very good."

  • "Highly reccomend Azuki for the freshness of product! Always have had a great experience either for lunch or dinner. The Scallops are a 'must-try' dish. Wouldn't let our server that the bowl away till we had enjoyed all the sauce left after scallops were gone!"

  • "The sushi was really fresh. I think azuki is my favorite sushi place in San Diego. The garlic edamame was awesome. We wanted to drink the sauce."

  • "My friend and I ordered 3 rolls and loved all of them. I also enjoyed the signature drinks, and appreciated that they were only $8. Some places charge $12+ for special drinks. Getting a reservation on open table was the best thing to do because the restaurant is very popular"

  • "Food was very fresh, flavorful. I have been looking for a reasonably priced sushi restaurant in my area and I recommend azuki sushi lounge."

  • "The sushi excellent, but the other menu items are not to be ignored. The salmon and risotto entree is, to me, heavenly comfort food. The garlic edamame appetizer is addictive. The food alone is worth your time and money, but the service of the staff is what keeps me coming back. From the greeting you get when you enter the restaurant to the attentive staff, you really feel welcomed and like a friend coming for a visit. I even come here with my toddler and they are so accommodating, it blows me away. I love this place - the food, the staff, the location."

  • "The food and service were both very good. We arrived at 6:00 before the rush so the crowd wasn't bad but it was getting full and crowded when we left. The only downside is that the back dining area is outside with heaters. Even in San Diego, dining outside during the winter is not ideal. As with all heated outdoor spots, some people near the heaters are hot and others are cold. It wasn't unbearable but I prefer to dine in a more controlled environment."

  • "Had high expectations for first time going in after reading previous reviews. Seated promptly at reservation time. Service took awhile to get drinks ordered. Happy hour menu limited but prices reasonable. HH also available in back patio dining area. Had to ask for ginger, which should be standard if ordering sushi. Sushi was just OK -- not enough to merit a return visit."

  • "Come early or make reservations. Upstairs semi enclosed patio has wonderful ambiance. Outdoor heaters assure never cold; need to watch so not too warm. Great appetizers! Wonderful attentive service! Wine lists and saki selections good, Not exhaustive, but plenty of choice. All hot food items are great. Sushi very good. Standard sashimi mediocre. Consider "adventurous sashimi". Wonderful desserts. Quiet enough of a romantic interlude and yet not so isolated as to cause service to be anything but the best"

  • "Overall food was good and interesting. The young lady who was our server could not be bothered in the least. We did arrive towards the end of lunch but her attitude really put a damper on our meal."

  • "Booked a table on Open Table last minute and glad we did as we got a comfortable corner table and were seated right away while other walk ups waited. I noticed the other tables were a bit close together and the Sushi Bar was elbow to elbow (request a table at one end or the other and away from the door if its chilly which is not very common in SD but it was tonight) Hostess and wait staff were great and the food was amazing. One of the Sushi rolls we had was wrapped with cucumber (thinly sliced) instead of rice paper and it was very refreshing tasty and inventive. After dinner we walked over to Balboa Park and it was a delightful way to cap an awesome evening. Parking was tough and no valet but well worth the effort."

  • "Everything was amazing however it took a bit of time before the wait staff came over to greet us and start our order. I did like how every single server was willing to help each other and provide anything we asked for. A lot of other places, if it's not our server, thy don't care. I appreciate the team work."

  • "We love this place it is the first place we think about when we want something good and healthy to eat. If is something quiet we are looking for is also the perfect place. Service is outstanding."

  • "We have the best time here with the most unique creations. This is a true find in the city area of you can make it. We highly recommend this to groups and couples. There is an outside back area that can get rowdy too. Love it"

  • "Azuki has a fantastic menu and great japanese/fusion food items. Wonderful experience. We just had to wait about 20 minutes to get in despite our reservation, but it was worth it."

  • "As a visitor, you'd never know this place was here. I've been to SD many times and have hit all the trendy (great and not so great) restaurants, can't belive I haven't found this one until now. Don't be fooled by the location. They get busy so make a reservation. We ate in front, it looked like there was a back patio area but we did not make it that far. The sushi is not only fresh but innovative and beautiful. Highly reccommended."
