Diner Reviews
  • "The atmosphere is lovely, service attentive, as always, lovely notated the name"

  • "A friend and I headed to St Helena to enjoy the beautiful day. At 1030am on a Sunday the restaurant was 3/4 full. Coffee in a 4 cup pot was brought immediately. We opted not to enjoy the renown Bloody Marie or Ramos Fizz this time. Also the warm cinnamon rolls. Between us, the spinach and goat cheese omelette and the pancakes with lemon ricotta and fresh blueberry puree were deeply satisfying. The place was bustling with business by the time we left. We did not feel rushed out, but welcome to linger. We'll be back."

  • "Very slow, uu organized. Food was okay portions really small for price."

  • "Made reservations for group of friends who had never been in and was concerned about name change and new chef. Only for a minute, the food and service were better than ever! Truly the best meal on our recent trip to the Napa valley. Every dish was outstanding!"

  • "Archetype, once was blue, is a great update and modification to an already wonderful spot to stop and eat and enjoy the local vibe."

  • "Every element of this meal was SO terrific that we reserved for breakfast 2 days later while we were sitting in the restaurant. Bravo!"

  • "The crimini mushroom soup with parsnip cream, and roast garlic fritters is delicious. I love the Parker House rolls! The best however is the petrale sole fish & chips with house cut fries, sweet and sour fennel slaw, and burnt lemon aioli . I look forward to trying the new brunch menu, it certainly looks and sounds better than the previous one. That one was just okay when my husband and I tried it awhile ago."

  • "Went for brunch with a 4 yr. old. Delightful! Food is extraordinary... you'll want to keep your camera handy. Each dish was so well presented... farm table elegance. Lemon ricotta pancakes were something you'll think about for the next couple weeks. Bagle with cream cheese was like you've never seen before. Lovely ambiance... spa-like Hamptons look."

  • "Food was really great from beginning to end. Wine list was good and local. Service was off and slow but when it was on, it was attentive."

  • "Beautiful restaurant that had a very rocky start. So glad they brought in a new team. Service was outstanding food was great, lively without being so loud you could not have pleasant conversation."

  • "We sat in the enclosed patio since the dining room was busy. The patio was lovely! In addition to heat lamps, they had heaters under my bench, which made it very comfortable as evening approached. We started with a superb mushroom soup topped with garlic fritters. The earthy flavors of the soup were fantastic. For an entree, I had the corned beef short ribs with rye spaetzle, sauerkraut and horseradish sauce. Spectacular. I'll be longing for this dish for a long time. My son had the chicken. It was moist and delicious. We shared the million dollar candy bar dessert. The cost won't break the bank but the flavors were worth a million! Our waiter, Wil, was fantastic. Friendly, helpful, professional! I'll return here the next time I'm in town."

  • "French Blue is located in a stunning Howard Backen designed building with beautiful decor. We all started with the Crimini Mushroom Soup ($12) which was very good. Entrees were Liberty Farms Duck Breast ($30) - Baked Petrale Sole ($24) - Boneless Baby-Back Ribs ($25) - Lemon Stuffed Petaluma Chicken ($24). All entrees were good, but pricey for small portion sizes (with exception of the chicken). The server (although very nice) was VERY GREEN. The manager & waitstaff also watched as two children ran around the restaurant & tables (numerous times) and another table took at least 75+ photos (with a FLASH) and did nothing about it (Amazing). Note: For GREAT FOOD, SERVICE, AMBIENCE & PRICES, try Tra Vigne Restaurant (just down the street)."

  • "We enjoyed the ambiance, but wish the menu on Saturdays was the same as the rest of the week. Server was assigned to many tables and was not relaxed , but seemed overly pressured. No small talk. Did not appear friendly. Food was different but excellent. We tried many different sides in our party of four. We live out of the area, but will return."

  • "First lets start with Ambience... the large dining room is open and airy giving a sense of soaring space while still intimate. However even though there are lots of exposed wood surfaces and the restaurant is crowded, it is not overly noisy and we found we could carry on our conversations in a normal tone of voice and there was no problem hearing. The service... was impeccable without being intrusive. Everyone from Kelly the Manager to servers and bus personnel was excellent and very friendly. The food... the most important for last. The brunch menu is simple and elegant with lots of delicious choices. Standouts for us were the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and the Norwegian trout with poached eggs and dill hollandaise all choice were excellent!"

  • "My wife and I had a good meal, but both of us left disappointed. The first time we went to French Blue we were wowed by the creativity and variety of the menu. This time the menu seemed to have fewer choices, and the dishes were not as creative. When you spend over $100 for lunch, I think you have the right to expect more."

  • "I was treating a dear friend to a birthday lunch and it was a first experience at the restaurant for both of us. We were impressed by the decor - the light and pleasant colors, the relaxed atmosphere. The decorating is fabulous - so many things brought together to create a very pleasant dining experience. We shared three items and every dish was so flavorful!! Compliments to the Chef - our meal was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. It was a splendid experience and we can't wait to return."

  • "The name fits perfectly. Please don't change it. The food was awesome. We loved everything about the restaurant."

  • "Good food has to be hand in hand with good service. This place has a clear disconnect. Makes for a mixed up visit. Is good food enough....never. It always takes both...good service in concert with good food."

  • "This is a beautiful little restaurant, a must for any Howard Backen fan. Wine, food and service were all great."

  • "As we walked into the restaurant on a beautiful sunny day, I had great expectations for a great meal. BOY, were we disappointed!!!. The staff are very unorganized..right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing unorganized...Empty dirty tables were in abundance, but not cleaned, while customers waited in an too small, of an area. It seemed very understaffed. We had reservations, so were seated after a table was cleaned). Service was slow, and also unorganized. It took us over an hour to get an omlet and some pancakes, while people around us who had come in after us were served bigger meals prior to our service. We had to finally ask someone for our meal. The drinks very watery, food sloppy, tasteless. We will not be returning...!"

  • "Came across on yelp whilst visiting wine country. Would definitely go back. Food was unique and delicious. Staff was happy and friendly. My only complaint is that service is slow and waitstaff is hard to find. So I you're super hungry or super high maintenance this might not be the best choice for you."

  • "We have eaten at French Blue twice before and loved it. This last time was a bit of a let down. They were 25 minutes late seating us for an 8pm reservation. We were seated on the porch, where the wood back seats are quite uncomfortable...but the real oddity was the food. The salad had bitter citrus in it, which didn't add to my enjoyment of it, and the sole, though fresh and delicious on its own, was bathed in a tomato sauce. I almost expected some spaghetti to be in there too. A delicate fish like sole doesn't need that. Maybe they've changed chefs."

  • "Have dined here under the old management and swore I would never come back. Very bad experience. Friends were in town and they wanted to try. Recent reviews spoke to a marked improvement. I must agree. This is back on the list of places to go. We did brunch. All 4 meals were well prepared and very tasty. Loved the ricotta pancakes with the blueberry sauce. Will be back for sure."

  • "Everything was wonderful. That's the bottom line French Blue was wonderful. They only thing that surprised by the attire of the waiters and waitresses. It was just a bit more casual for the price of the tab. My waiter was wonderful. Very knowledge, but I was surprised on the attire."

  • "Great feel to the restaurant. Love the decor. However, the service was disappointing. Drinks weren't refilled or even offered. It took way too long just sitting and waiting for the bill.."

  • "This has to be one of the most beautiful restaurants you could find anywhere. Our food was delicious and service was excellent. We were allowed to taste two wines before we selected. Very romantic place to have a fine dinner."

  • "French Blue was a great find. We were staying in St. Helena and searched on OpenTable for local restaurants. The menu looked great and we decided to give it a try. We were very impressed with the food, the service and the wine selections. A true gem."

  • "It's pretty much the 'only' place in Napa that serves a delectable breakfast in a beautiful barn-like setting. It's definitely on my itinerary each time I'm up in Napa! It's a MUST!"

  • "Had brunch at French Blue. The Smoked Trout was the best meal we had during our weekend trip to Napa. The eggs and waffles with the duck confit was outstanding as well. I liked that when you order a cup of coffee, they bring you a container of coffee."

  • "French blue is a wonderfully crafted and presented restaurant in st. Helena. I hear thought the grapevine that it is shortly to close for a remodel, rebranding and re opening. Too bad but understood since I am sure the new management company, auberge, is having a tough time explainingt the name when in fact it has nothing to do with French food, only the color. Service last weekend was exceptional and thefood was delicious."

  • "With an incredible atmosphere and enthusiastic staff this gem has made a complete turn around under new management. The Aberge du Soleil quality is evident. Great place to enjoy any meal. We will return, again!"

  • "French Blue was a great spot to stop in for some small snacks and a few drinks. We didn't stay for dinner as we had other plans, but the dinner menu looked great!"

  • "We chose this restaurant at the last minute and they accommodated us nicely. I would have liked a more separated table but I guessed as we were fill ins we got a farm style table that had cute small potted plants separating the three groups of diners using the one plank table even though there were a number of 4 person tables unoccupied. The restaurant became busier about midway through our brunch. That is the only reason I gave the a 4 star on ambience. Tasteful and unique decorations. Loved the music playing in the background! Fabulous food/ Pink Mimosas and Bloody Marys as well as the delicious lemon-ricotta pancakes."

  • "Oysters, the cuisine, the cocktails & wine list, the ambience, the prompt courteous service & a local's favorite as well. If you are visiting wine country, you don't want to miss dining at this restaurant. While enjoying a terrific meal you're most likely to run into the locals that make some of Napa Valley's finest wines. It's a true delight."

  • "This is an upscale eatery in the Napa Valley that is undergoing a transitional ownership period. Sol age is now serving as the contractor managing the place and this transition has caused major problems in the operation on the place. The food remains terrific And innovative but service very sketchy. I had a Dover sole wrapped in a ball in a spicy sauce of tomatoes and Italian rice. Fabulous! My wife had the boneless pork ribs, also great. Chef is wonderful, infrastructure wanting. They told us they will rename the place. Watch for it!"
