Diner Reviews
  • "Our server was great and the food came out fast and delicious. You can definitely split a meal!"

  • "We were 7 people for lunch with a reservation; the host would not seat four who arrived first (hot day, not a good call). Then we were very packed in although that was the exception for this table, right against the front window (backs to it), as the other tables seemed comfortable. Assuming no one had to get up for any reason, the food was great, the waitress very cool and we had a good time. So, yes, would go there again but not with a group unless I saw how we were going to be seated."

  • "We were traveling in Boston and found Al Dente on Open Table. We are so happy we did! Excellent food, service and the people there are wonderful! We highly recommend it! It was truly a great meal!"

  • "This restaurant is very small but that is what is charming about it. Very loud with people eating and having fun! We enjoyed that but if you are looking for a quiet dinner this is not the place. If you want some excellent homemade pasta and great service this is the pace."

  • "This is a great little Italian restaurant with authentic pastas, sauces, and breads!"

  • "We wanted to find an Italian restaurant with a family feel. We found it here at Al Dente. My puttanesca was fantastic and the butternut ravioli as an appetizer was so mouthwatering delicious that we wanted to lick the plate. My husband had the cannelloni with the cream sauce was good but very rich. We had a delightful time with this family. A wonderful experience and recommended for a good Italian dinner."

  • "I ordered the seafood dish without pasta and they were more than happy to accommodate. The waitress even came back to check and make sure that they didn't give me pasta once the dish arrived. Fabulous food and great service!"

  • "Had heard so much about the Boston Italian restaurants that we were a bit disappointed. The Ceasar salad for two was enough for three (or four) and a bit bland. We shared the gnocci with red sauce and added veal. The red sauce was average and the veal was tender but nothing that we could not get at our own neighborhood Italian restaurant. It looked like their chicken dishes were more imaginative but if we are ever back in Boston we shall probably try another spot."

  • "We come from a family of outstanding Italian cooks and this food rivaled theirs! Everyone was very pleasant, our waitress, Lisa, was superb, and the food was outstanding. The sauces were flavorful and the marinara was thick (not watery) and perfectly seasoned! We will be back the next time we are in time."

  • "There is a plethora of restaurants in the North End, most with big lines of people waiting outside. Al Dente takes reservations, which was nice, as we were seated within 20 minutes of our reservation. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was very good - not gourmet, but well-prepared traditional Italian. I had the shrimp and scallops in Vodka sauce, which was delicious. We also had the sautéed calamari, which was tender and flavorful. Nice North End experience!"

  • "Had dinner with a friend here. It had very good reviews on Yelp which turned out to be true. Not a fancy restaurant, but definitely had the flavor of the north end. I had the lobster ravioli that was delicious and my friend had the muscles which she said were great. She loved the sauce. I would definitely eat here again."

  • "Went here with my parents and girlfriend after my students graduated from 8th grade. Good service, good food, and not too expensive. (As a bonus, the lone TV was playing a World Cup game.) I've been here once before and it was also very good."

  • "We LOVE this place. It has become our family go-to when we crave a classic North End Italian experience. Our two young children love the meatballs, and we love the house made fusilli and their vodka sauce. They make a GREAT marinara, too. Most of all, they make you feel so welcome. It's the kind of neighborhood Italian I grew up going to with my Italian grandfather. No frills, just outstanding food and service."

  • "We were a party of 7 that located this restaurant on Open Table. Our selection was later validated by a Local. We were seated immediately upon arrival even with an additional person in our party. Our Server was patient with us and helped us with our selections. We all had different entrees which were all very well prepared in rather large portions. Would return."

  • "Very busy, old family-style restaurant. Large plates, good service, very good Veal Marsala. Only disappointment was that we did not receive Limoncello after-dinner drink which was given to other tables."

  • "Honestly, this place already has a ton of great reviews. But I feel I really need to say that beyond the delicious food (which it is), the people that work here are just top notch. The waitress we had knew so many of the customers and the friendly banter just showed how much the place is loved and has a family feel to it. The waitress treated us that way also. After having a great dinner, we left the restaurant very happy and full. I got home and realized that I had left a necklace on the table. We called them to see if it had been found and not only had they found the necklace but they asked for our address and they dropped it in the mail that night to me since I could not get there sooner. That is just above and beyond."

  • "I've been here about 10 times and the food is always great. However, there is always a long wait even with a reservation. Last time had a reservation for 4 people, 3 of us were there on time and they told us we could not be seated before our 4th person got there, and were given a bit of an attitude. Now I know this is common at busy restaurants, so no problem, right? Well, I wouldn't have had a problem, except another group came after me with a later reservation and they were also waiting for their 4th person, but the waitress seated them instead. I don't know if it was because I was with a group of Japanese friends but doing that for them right after refusing to do it for us, and right in front of us, was rude. Waited one hour."

  • "Sea bass was excellent. Chicken Marsalla was also very good. Our waittress was very attentive and personable. Definitly try some of the sangria!"

  • "I learned about this place eight years ago. It is the only place in the north end I will go. I bring all my out-of-town guests here and they say they did not know Italian food could taste so good."

  • "My first bad review. Al Dente aka the dungeon. Note, the pics you see online are actually their sister restaurant next door. Thought this was a restaurant. Instead. it was almost a sports bar with a TV showing sports. I had a guy hovering over my shoulder yelling at the tv. Take pain pills as you will get a headache from the noise. Only the most obnoxious people will be heard in your conversation. If you have claustrophobia stay away. I'm 5'10 and 160 so I am a very skinny guy and had to squeeze to get into the table. God forbid there would ever be a fire in this place. One table had a table cloth and that was the one right at the front door to make it look nice to the tourists from the outside. Food was fine. Just typical red saw Italian."

  • "Based on online reviews, a friend and I decided to dine here for the first time. Our waitress was especially accomodating and our dinner meals were well prepared and very delicious - there's lots to choose from on the menu. You must try the meat cannolis! I would recommend Al Dente to anyone looking for a neighborly, relaxing spot to enjoy a great meal in the Northend."

  • "We found Al Dente by searching on Trip Advisor and it came highly recommend. We made a reservation. We were told the table would be ready in about five minutes and it was. It was not a romantic booth in a quiet corner but again this is not the expectation. The expectation is the food. My problem was there were too many good looking choices on the menu. I needed help and our waitress steered me in the right direction. She seconded the choice I had thought about. I had the Veal Valdostona. My wife had her usual Eggplant Parmigiana. Both meals were excellent! I would recommend Al Dente to anyone but do not expect to linger. Also they have validated parking at the Parcel 7 garage which makes the evening a bit more enjoyable."

  • "Italian food, as it is supposed to be. Ricotta melts in your mouth. Meatballs like you have always wished to taste. Service like you are in an Italian home. Choice of 8+sauces, only tried 4, but in two visits inspired me to run the gambit. Chicken, steak, veal, or non gluten meat substance I will eat their delicious creation. "

  • "No matter how many times we come to this restaurant--and we have been there at least a dozen times--it just gets better each time. Each dish--especially the chicken cacciatore and the chicken marsala--are beyond outstanding. And Angela and Marion couldn't be kinder. or more fun or more efficient, as is Michael at the door. Eating at Al Dente's is not only a delicious meal but it is a total event. Our very favorite Italian restaurant in the north end. Or anywhere in MA. But we do have to say that we are loving Rustic River in Woodstock, NH, where Sal emulates some of these wonderful meals. But when we are not in nH, there is only one place we would consider going to, or taking our friends and family, and that is Al Dente!!!"

  • "First impression: horrible. Very noisy, crowded, no ambience, not a place for a romantic dinner. But it became obvious that this was a place for regulars. The whole staff seemed to be family, with lots of hugs for regular customers. Our server was wonderful and very solicitous. We chose Al Dente for its gluten free offerings and they were great -- even garlic bread."

  • "I selected Al Dente because my son 's favorite food is Italian food and this was his graduation from BU. The food and service were great! The homemade chicken soup, and calamari were our appetizers, my son and I had the Al Dente Special , my mom had the chicken ravioli, and my son's girlfriend had Chicken Alfredo and we top it off with a Pinot that was excellent. We will definitely going back and recommend Al Dente. "

  • "I booked this for my wife and I to celebrate our anniversary. I didn't know what to expect, but based on the reviews I thought I'd give it a try. Great food at a very reasonable price. Great selection. The staff were very friendly and cordial, and it's located in a great neighborhood. Highly recommend!"
