All seafood is sustainable, obtained from Monterey Fish Market. All meats are hormone- and antibiotic-free.

Ajanta has been voted best Indian restaurant in the entire San Francisco Bay Area by Zagat Guide from 2009-2014. We were also voted best Indian restaurant in the Bay Area A-List contest from 2009-2011 and 2013. In addition, we have received top reviews in several publications, including the East Bay Express, Diablo Magazine, and the Contra Costa Times. We are also included in Michelin Guide.

Diner Reviews
  • "Best Indian Food in the Bay Area. Ajanta takes itself very seriously (food & service) and its diners reap the rewards. Also the wine prices are well below market - clearly priced to encourage complementing outstanding food with appropriate drinks."

  • "We really enjoyed the food and the experience. This is something rather special in an Indian restaurant. Interesting menu and exquisitely cooked food at very reasonable prices. Would definitely return."

  • "I loved every dish that was served. The tasting menu was great for me as I'm haven't had much Indian food. Really good! Would go back for sure...except next time I'd bring friends! The service was great too!"

  • "I've been going to Ajanta for many, many years. I used to live in Oakland but now live in east Contra Costa county and can't get there as often as I would like. The food is amazing and well worth the drive!!"

  • "This family-run restaurant provides the best of Asian Indian cuisine. Recipe listings have a solid foundation of classics with innovative recipes from various regions rotating in and out with the seasons. There is a story to accompany the featured dish, letting you know its history and how it came to be a part of the chef's repertoire. It never disappoints. providing options for the omnivore and vegan alike. It is truly a neighborhood gem, the staff making you feel like one of the family."

  • "I have eaten at Ajanta for years, and seek it out as one of my favorite go-to places in Berkeley. My main course was delicious, however the appetizer we got (veggie pakora) was awful. Bland, every piece seemed to be zucchini, just like zucchini fritters rather than pakora. Also we had a reservation that got confused by the maitre'd. And it wasn't clear at first who was going to be helping us at our table. Things just seemed a little more disjointed and not as put together and outstanding as they usually are."

  • "Ajanta beckons whenever we return from a trip outside the Bay Area. We just have to go there and enjoy some great Indian food. It has become a tradition for us."

  • "We discovered recently with friends that Ajanta is also one of their favorite restaurants, so met up last Sunday for dinner. Always fun with 4 or more (we were 5) because we could eat family style and try lots of new dishes. Our servers were gracious and non-intrusive - especially important as we were together to catch up. The lamb dishes (new this month and the kadhai gosht) as well as the chicken pistachio, the tandoori salmon and the paneer kofta were all tasty, not too spicy for us to enjoy with wine and not a bite left over! We chose the brown basmati rice, and our meals came with fresh naan and traditional condiments of salted vegetables, seasoned carrots and mango chutney. We shared our favorite kulfi and a mango sorbet for dessert."

  • "We have been coming to Ajanta for several years. They have never disappointed us. The only reason we don't come more often is we live in Walnut Creek so it is not so convenient. They are very cooperative about adjusting the seasoning to our tastes so it is never too hot."

  • "Food was bland, service was non-existent. simple dishes like daal makhani were watered down and flavorless. The tandoori chicken tikka although moist was devoid of any masala. The lamb chops and tandoori fish saved the dinner, although the portions were small. At their prices and the zagat rating I expected much better. Would go to amber over this place anyday"

  • "They offer a variety of healthful, organic food that represent different parts of India."

  • "Just tried Ajanta for the first time. The food was delicious! We had a wonderful meal and attentive waiters in a calm, soothing environment. It was perfect after a long day at work. Can't wait to go back and try a number of their dishes. I liked the fact that they want you to choose your hotness level and check in with you to see if you are happy."

  • "This north Berkeley neighborhood restaurant still turns out high quality Indian food from multiple regions."

  • "food service was 1. take order 2. put food in front of you 3. that's all. Food: was FANtastic as usual. Not sure what we felt was missing? Maybe a bit of acknowledgement that we were humans behind the credit card? Hard to sound appropriate because the proper things happened, from wait staff, but there was no passion or emotion there.... Did I say the food was fantastic?! lol. Yes, it was. normally I give this place 4 stars...."

  • "Disappointing that this is rated as (one of) the best Indian restaurants in the Bay Area. It now has the feeling of a place that is a little tired. The service was discrete and the food was tasty. The kitchen tried to add a little something with presentation but it clearly is not their forte. This was not our first time, and to be honest it hasn't changed a lot. It could have changed for the better, but seems to be content with staying at good rather than striving for excellence. "

  • "The tasting menu is excellent--really varied and interesting, very reasonably priced. For under $30 apiece we tried small portions of scallops, asparagus, eggplant, pistachio chicken, fish, tandoori lamb, rice, naan, and condiments. Everything was delicious. Dessert came with it too."

  • "Enjoyed the evening, good food, shared a salad that was tasty and fresh. I had two different Indian beers that were good. Service was very good. Enjoyed the fact that you could talk without having to raise your voice. We would go again and recommend it to others.............thank you"

  • "Although we no longer live in the Bay Area, we go to Ajanta as often as possible. Ajanta is, hands down, the best Indian food we have ever eaten. Not only that, their service, quality and ambience are consistently excellent. We love that they use such fresh, sustainably sourced produce and that they make notes to alert their customers who may have dietary restrictions. My only complaint is that they are so far from my home in Sacramento!"

  • "The number of Indian people who were customers was the first indication that in a city with many Indian restaurants, the food here was bound to be good and it was! The food was really, really flavorful and delightful : )"

  • "We we lived in the Bay Area, we were frequent visitors to Ajanta. Every visit would introduce us to a delicious dish we had never seen at any other Indian restaurant. When our travels brought us back to the area we quickly headed to Ajanta where we ordered the tasting menu (non-vegetarian). Starting with the first offering, wonderful scallops, each dish was outstanding. The food at Ajanta is not just fantastic Indian food, it is fabulous food regardless of its origins."

  • "They do need to polish the service. The food is average at best. The presentation is mediocre. Came from Concord and was not worth the trip. Not planning to go again anytime soon."

  • "Really enjoyed our celebratory (birthday) dinner with friends here...thought that medium spicy was hot enough...beware of the pickles."

  • "This place is a find. Solano is a really fun neighborhood with a lot of Asian restaurants, but this one stands out. Very nice staff, very lively and fun. Food was excellent - I had chicken dish with medium spices, my wife had lamb in a mild sauce - all very good. Veggie pakoras good, but not too much. Naan was OK. Had to flag down a waiter."

  • "The food is wonderful! We typically order too much but the wait staff always warns us when we are ordering too much and makes helpful suggestions. Also, we stayed too long because we were talking with an old friend. We were the last to leave and they were utterly gracious even though we really should have left sooner."

  • "Beautifully arranged plates with high quality ingredients, but all dishes overly salted including one which was inedible due to saltiness. We are accustomed to salt in foods."

  • "Ajanta is really an interesting place. We have been eating at Ajanta since they were upstairs in a little spot on Telegraph, seems like forever. Their current restaurant is more upscale, nicely designed, comfortable, but still small and intimate. The offerings are wonderful because they have excellently prepared renditions of fairly standard dishes, but they also have rotating, varying regional dishes which are not only unusual but can't be found anywhere else. Really well presented and prepared, wonderfully tasty! We live in SF but love to cross the Bay to indulge in this very special restaurant. Bravo!"

  • "The food at Adjanta is consistently wonderful, but be aware that their medium spicey may be hotter than you expect. The menu changes monthly depending on what good produce is in season. I love the eggplant dish when it is available. Good wine list, and friendly service. Quiet enough to talk, and one of my favorite places in the Bay Area! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️"

As appetizer: Veg Samosa - light compared to other Samosas I have had Tandoori Scallops As main course: Chicken Tikka Masala - yum Navaratta Korma - yum Basmati Rice - essential - comes with a spinach side, don't know what it is called. Naan - yum, yum Assorted Chutneys Dessert: Kulfi - a standout! Cardamon Gelato"

  • "I've eaten here several times in the past for lunch. This was my first evening dining experience. It's always been consistently delicious with very pleasant and quick service. The taste of the food is incredible. They have so many choices from a variety of locales around India which makes it very unique. The tastes are very pure and distinct. We met the owner and asked him for their cookbook which they have for sale. I highly recommend purchasing it if you'd like to try your hand at preparing the dishes at home. He even signed the book for us! If you've been wanting to try Indian cuisine for the first time, or if you're looking for the best spot in the gourmet ghetto in Berkeley to have Indian food, you must try Ajanta!"
