A word from Ajanta Restaurant
Ajanta features regional dishes from all over India, offered through a menu that changes every month. We feature organic chicken and vegetables. When possible, we use local and sustainable products. All seafood is sustainable, obtained from Monterey Fish Market. All meats are hormone- and antibiotic-free.

Ajanta has been voted best Indian restaurant in the entire San Francisco Bay Area by Zagat Guide from 2009-2014. We were also voted best Indian restaurant in the Bay Area A-List contest from 2009-2011 and 2013. In addition, we have received top reviews in several publications, including the East Bay Express, Diablo Magazine, and the Contra Costa Times. We are also included in Michelin Guide.

Food was excellent - I had chicken dish with medium spices, my wife had lamb in a mild sauce - all very good. Veggie pakoras good, but not too much. Naan was OK. Had to flag down a waiter."

  • "Ajanta is really an interesting place. We have been eating at Ajanta since they were upstairs in a little spot on Telegraph, seems like forever. Their current restaurant is more upscale, nicely designed, comfortable, but still small and intimate. The offerings are wonderful because they have excellently prepared renditions of fairly standard dishes, but they also have rotating, varying regional dishes which are not only unusual but can't be found anywhere else. Really well presented and prepared, wonderfully tasty! We live in SF but love to cross the Bay to indulge in this very special restaurant. Bravo!"

  • "I've eaten here several times in the past for lunch. This was my first evening dining experience. It's always been consistently delicious with very pleasant and quick service. The taste of the food is incredible. They have so many choices from a variety of locales around India which makes it very unique. The tastes are very pure and distinct. We met the owner and asked him for their cookbook which they have for sale. I highly recommend purchasing it if you'd like to try your hand at preparing the dishes at home. He even signed the book for us! If you've been wanting to try Indian cuisine for the first time, or if you're looking for the best spot in the gourmet ghetto in Berkeley to have Indian food, you must try Ajanta!"

Its fish or meats are succulent and not over-cooked and dried-out as in most ethnic restaurants, usually because everything is usually cooked early in a batch so that the time that ou order your meal at 730-800 or later, you might as well be eating "jerky." Not Ajanta. It is our "go-to" restaurant for OOT guests."

The service was slow and essentially we were ignored while others who had come in after us were attended to. Once we ordered, the food, which was disappointing, was pretty much slapped in front of us. If the food had been better, it could have made up for the poor service since I understand there may be off days where there might be a staff shortage or whatever. But since the food was merely ok, overpriced for what it was, and the service was so bad, I will never go back. There are a lot of other excellent Indian restaurants nearby."
