Diner Reviews
  • "Enjoying the tasting menu at this restaurant is an artistic experience. This is a gallery of culinary delight. The expense is steep, especially with the wine pairing, but it is one of the most lavish eating experiences I have had. Be prepared to absorb the food as you would fine art. You will not be disappointed. I enjoyed my vist and I will return with family."

  • "My date and I arrived a few minutes early and were seated on time at 9:15. The wait staff is excellent and treated us as you would expect for a fine dining restaurant. There were several amuse-bouche offerings that were elegant and tasty. The Seasonal Tasting Menu was no longer available and one item on the Prix Fixe menu was not available. The first course of Black Angus beef carpaccio and the Hamachi with Bronte pistachios, ginger, and Osetra caviar were excellent. The second course of Smoked potato gnocchi with crispy sweetbreads, Maitake mushrooms, and pancetta cream was also excellent. The third courses, Chinook salmon and Stuffed chicken breast, were less flavorful and not up to the preceding amuse-bouche and menu items."

  • "One of the finest and most refined restaurants in San Francisco. Excellent personal and professional service at every level. Sommelier was extremely knowledgeable, conversatinal, not condecending, pleasant, and a gentleman. The dining experience mirrored an evening at a Relais et Chateau in Italy."

  • "Been a few years since last visit and it's been too long. One of the few restaurants in town that seems to have found the sweet spot for food/service/noise. If you're looking for a place to have a conversation AND a great meal and even at a reasonable price for the quality, then this is the place. Quieter than Gary Danko and just about the same level of quality. If you're an auditory overload junkie who can't think of anything to say, then skip it."

  • "My sister was in town so I chose this place to have a nice, quiet dinner with her since we see each other very seldom. The wines by the glass are only Italian...so it was hard to get a heavy-bodied white. If that is what you like (which we do) then you are forced into buying a bottle and none of them come cheap. Neither of us are big eaters, but the portions that they serve would rival any French restaurant servings! . The desserts were OK... Our service was quite good...very attentive. However, he had such a strong Italian accent, I had a hard time understanding him. I say "not just any date night" due to the cost. It is not often that I spend over $400 for a meal...and when I do, it had better by a special occasion."

  • "From when we arrived to when we left the service was attentive without being overbearing. The only other restaurant we have experienced that level of service was the French Laundry, which is quite a bit pricier. The portion size meal pacing was perfect. We left satisfied without feeling stuffed."

  • "I don't know if I love this restaurant more for the food or for the service. Each dish excites for a different reason. The sommelier loves to help you pair a wine and explain why it will work with your menu choices, and will help you find something in your price range. Understand that this place is expensive, but the exceptional care is worth it. I know of no restaurant whose service staff is more gracious and caring. And if that isn't enough, they seem to love what they do. And that's taking care of you."

  • "Simply one of the best dining experiences we have had. Fantastic food full of subtle flavours all perfectly balanced and delivered with style. Flavour always being priority. Perfect portion sizes with plenty of little extra tasty morsels throughout the meal. Attentive, knowledgeable, professional service throughout with a great sommelier. Nice sized dining area with an intimate feel but well spaced tables so that you feel private. This was our 3rd visit over a year and it hits the same mark every time. Book ahead though as it's deservedly popular."

  • "I think this is one of the most romantic restaurants in San Francisco. The food is excellent; I think the pasta I ate with a creamy brown sauce was about the best pasta I have ever eaten. In addition, the veal was outstanding, and the carpaccio was the very best I have ever had in my life. This place is outstanding folks. And I do mean outstanding."

  • "This is the fourth time I have been here for dinner spanning the last ten years or so. The food, if anything has improved. The service is still impeccable without being stuffy, a fine line to walk. They think of little things like a place to put your handbag, instead of on the floor. I love food, but I can't eat gluten, and the chef not only fixed me special dishes, but since we had the dishes with wine pairings, I even had a different wine to go with my gluten free dishes."

  • "The food was amazing and the service was just excellent, BUT it was all relatively ruined by an obnoxiously loud & vulgar group of 6 sitting right near us. Loud screaming, swearing and other informal behavior I would expect in a hotel bar not a fine eating establishment unfortunately made this special occasion a nightmare. I'm sorry that the management didn't feel it was their responsibility to ask them to settle down or leave. I am not a wealthy person and spending $400 on dinner for two would have been worth it if the ambiance hadn't been so disturbing. I guess, I would say if you are planning on going here for a special occasion you had just better pray you don't have loud, rude, vulgar people sitting near you or you will be out of luck."

  • "Acquerello is the spot in SF for that once in a lifetime special experience to be remembered forever, if you're wanting to plan for such a thing. The experience here is an absolute performance from beginning to end. The food is of the highest quality, inventive and really well done. The service is impeccable an authentic. The entire staff is genuinely happy that you are there with them and enjoying the evening. Step by delicious step, they are your hosts through an extraordinary culinary adventure that is full of delightful surprises and leaves the body and soul truly satisfied."

  • "Let's not beat around the bush - this is just about the best Italian food in Northern California and you'd have to go to Rome to find a better list of Italian wines (if you're a BYOB person, corkage will set you back 50 dollars) - but excellence comes at a price, and the tariff is steep. You won't get out the door for less than 125 bucks a person, and you may spend considerably more. Service is gracious and understated - you'll never see them around and yet, your glass is always full, there's always bread on the table (along with a wonderful goat butter) and the courses arrive promptly, but without any rush or fuss. My one complaint is that the room is windowless - it just feels a little claustrophobic...."

  • "Very understated and elegant dining experience. Service was very responsive and very attentive...as well as patient in answering questions. All dishes were esquisite, tasty and worthy of any 'special occasion'. Wine list was extensive with broad selection. We visited as a family with grown children, but I could envision many settings for Acquerello...business, romantic interlude, a gathering of friends...while not formal, it does require a little 'cleaning up' and 'spit shine' in your attire. Well worth it!"

  • "Such an amazing experience. My siblings and I took our mother out for a special dinner: It was flawless, from the elaborate yet understated choreography of every serving, to our server and her team who were so personable, professional and elegant, yet as accessible as the food. Every dish was extremely detailed, current, and very delicious. Perfect for foodies but accommodating to those with particular palettes. The menu was varied and very interesting. The wine list extensive, all Italian. So worth it!"

  • "We staff treated us like we were royalty. Even though we ordered the 3 course prix fixe dinner, the chef sent out dish after dish with his compliments. We probably had 10 different dishes brought to us throughout the night. It was an amazing night!"

  • "Unfortunately had the signature rigatoni that was way off that night (much too sweet (too much Marsala) and bitter (poorly cleaned foie gras?) otherwise the dishes were very good. The service more than made up for the uneven cuisine"

  • "We had a wonderful meal from start to finish at Aquarello. The food was certainly at the top level for San Francisco or anywhere. Service was attentive and generous. Every course was delicious, refined and just the right size. We were sated, pleased and surprised by the interesting flavor combinations and the generous extras provided by the chef. Aquarello is a "keeper.""

  • "When thinking of a restaurant to celebrate my General Manager's 10th anniversary with the company I knew it had to be Acquarello. Giancarlo, Suzette and their entire staff have such a high level of expertise and commitment to the food and wine. There's never a detail missed. And they make you feel comfortable when maneuvering the menu and wine list. This is food and service at it's best."

  • "Excellent in all ares. Perfect service and superior food. The portion of risotto and gnocchi were far too small even for a tasting menu. The veg dishes were perfect along with the cheese selection. Wine list is excellent."

  • "Not worth the price! There are so many other restaurant choices in the area that cost less and offer far more, both in terms of quality and quantity of food and overall service."

  • "What an amazing and notable experience. We choose this restaurant on the chance that it would be a great place to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. We were not disappointed. I have been to the French Laundry and this place exceeded the food quality and service. The waiters were exceptional at being courteous, knowledgeable about the food and its preparation, and the sommelier was spot on for the wine pairing of every dish we ordered. The serving size was perfect; extra appetizers were provided gratis and to our lingual delight. The foam sauces were especially effective at complementing the dishes. We look forward to returning to this restaurant."

  • "Although all the courses proceeding the main were delicious and well presented, we were disappointed in the sword fish and the truffle chicken mains. All our previous dinners at Aquerello were memorable -- each and every dish wonderful. One of our guests left most of the swordfish so we were surprised when no one even inquired if there had been a problem."

  • "Although the ambience, service and food preparation were all top notch, we left feeling we'd just eaten at a restaurant from the past. Every course including the "palate cleanser" presented before the main course was incredibly rich. Unfortunately our food did not arrive piping hot as would be expected. We sent our main course back after a couple bites of lukewarm veal and barely warm potatoes By the time the cheese course and desert arrived we were ready for alkaselzer. Pluses for all the extras - 3 chef surprises before the meal and a nice selection of sweets at the end as well as a little box of biscoti to take home. Great wine list - but $50 corkage was an unpleasant surprise. We would not return."

  • "There are so many fantastic fine dining establishments in San Francisco that I love, but I think Acquerello might be my favorite. The food is just the right mix of innovative and comforting. I've never had a single bite of anything there that was less that fabulous. The service is also wonderful and the interior beautiful and romantic. I love Acquerello!"

  • "Acquerello was a gorgeous special occasion restaurant with impeccable service. The food was not quite at the level of perfection as Gary Danko, but the veal was spot on, the cheese plate was awesome, and the dessert fantastic. One disappointment - there is no bar, only beer and very expensive wine. We are not wine drinkers, although they did have champagne so I was able to get a kir royale, but was charged so much it wasn't worth it."

  • "Truffle-heavy, so if you don't like truffles, you're both crazy and out of luck. There were at least two dishes where I thought "this is the best thing I've ever tasted"."

  • "Acquerello has been around for almost thirty years but that doesn't mean the restaurant has stayed back in the past century. The food is delightful, combining some modern techniques with old school to come up with a combination that is hard to beat. The service is exemplary with everyone involved seeming dedicated to the diner's pleasure. Definitely a must go to."

  • "Acquerello is a superb restaurant...artful, tasteful dining and wine pairing experience the best ever. Chef Suzette Gresham's skills transport the diner into a culinary world filled with delectable dishes. The wait staff top notch! A special place to celebrate momentous life occasions. A dining gem in SF."

  • "The food and service and the beautiful room are all Michelin 2 star worthy. However, one really needs to have a very wide sense of taste. In our case my wife did not have the complimentary aperitif (vermouth and orange juice) but she does not drink the latter. She did not eat the complimentary small taste because it was a mussel which she does not eat. She had a lot of trouble picking choices from the menu because every choice had a wide range of ingredients and there was invariably one or another that she would not eat. One of those she got was chicken breast and it bordered on rare. She did her best by eating around the outside but in the end the texture put her off. I my self like underdone chicken an it was too raw for me."

  • "A beautiful location, intimate, cozy and chic. Great staff with exemplary customer service. The dishes are wonderfully served with an excellent visual. Delicious food, unique. Recommended for all people who appreciate good cuisine at a more expensive price."

  • "Every plate was presented as food-art. The food did not only look good, it WAS good! i had a great succulent chicken and the best risotto. Their wine list is very impressive. You can find wine from some of the smallest and best Italian wineries, plus, of course, the largest and best known wineries. The service is impeccable, the envy of many other restaurants who struggle to find well-trained servers. I will be back soon."
