Diner Reviews
  • "My family along with my brother's family (4 adults and 4 kids) enjoyed a great evening at Acenar. The food and service were very good and our waiter was more than happy to accommodate the kids by getting their food out quickly. He also had margaritas made to our specifications, and they were wonderful, best we have had in San Antonio in fact. Be sure to ask for the hot salsa if you like spicy foods, you won't be disappointed. Excellent dinner all the way around."

  • "Friendly and helpful service; waiter made recommendations and checked in often. Portions were plentiful and delicious--cabrito, duck tacos, and carnitas were all very good. Wish we could have enjoyed the outside terrace but it was a bit too cold. Need a bit more space in the aisles to accommodate the guacamole cart, which butted my daughter's chair several times going through."

  • "The guacamole was excellent. Other than that, nothing else was noteworthy. The service was poor."

  • "Food was excellent! Service was just fair; waiter forgot about I'd. We did not receive our silverware. Little things regarding service could have been alot better."

  • "Lunch reservation for 6 - seated no problem at table on the patio for business lunch....place was busy as many people were dining prior to going to see "Wicked" matinee up the street that afternoon....waitress was excellent...service was quick despite the crowd...food was terrific...I'll go back again for sure"

  • "Great ambience....and fabulous waiter. Wile the food was good...the waiter and the overall experience was great! I would definitely come back....the table side guacamole was outstanding as well as the never ending chip bowl, ha! Right on the river walk and the Hotel Valencia, perfect location. Definitely dine on the patio and get as close to the river walk for some great sight seeing."

  • "Great place for a relaxing lunch, before heading out to the theater. Blue crab tacos, duck chalupas, fried oyster tacos. So many unique things to pick from. All delicious and inexpensive. Friendly, efficient staff and pretty view on the patio overlooking the river walk. We will be back!"

  • "Very disappointed with wait staff, felt rushed although it was 3:00pm, quality of food was not good, even the desert was sub standard at best. I love tres leche cake and I took a few bites of it and pushed the rest off to my husband. He didn't care for it either. I was hoping this would at least taste as good as Rosario's, but Lisa missed the calling by going touristy. I will not return or send my guest to this place ever. Also went to Acenar for my birthday lunch and was told happy birthday by the host but that is where it ended. It would have been nice to have been comped sopapillas. We weren't even offered tortillas with our meals!"

  • "I should have listened to the concierge at the hotel who offered several suggestions he thought we would prefer. But stubborn i was after reading all the great reviews? Well the oyster appetizer was really,, the margaritas were also good, but my wife had the shrimp tacos which offered such small portion and the tortia were very bad. I had the steak fajitas(skirt steak on the menu). Here to the flour tortia tasted like they came from the grocery and the steak was over cooked and tasted awful, totally unprepared for whatever the chef thought she was attempting t creat? We thought this Mexican would be good to try but next time we are in town we will stick with the recommended local favorites."

  • "I brought out of town, "real" Mexican food loving, family guests to Acenar for an early lunch before heading out to the Majestic for a musical and they LOVED it! We sat outside by the river, the weather was perfect, the chips and salsa were fresh and delicious, the drinks were smooth and tasty, the service was kind and prompt, and the food was ethnically delicious! Ambiance couldn't have been better and we are now making Acenar our new family tradition go to hot spot!"

  • "Duck enchiladas were outstanding!!! The flavors were subtle yet divine! Red and green sauces complimented the duck perfectly. The other diner ordered the special, which was grilled shrimp and cilantro rice. The rice was perfection. The portion should have been larger. Overall, this was my second favorite restaurant in San Antonio. Be prepared to pay more than expected for mixed drinks."

  • "Don't waste your money and time. I've been to mexican fast food restaurants and little dive hole in the wall mexican restaurants that do a better job of cooking than this place. Service is indifferent. Really bad, no flavor. Four of us dined and all agreed. Ordered queso, shrimp tacos, shrimp/crab enchiladas, pork, and another enchilada dish. Could not even taste seafood in either shrimp dish, maybe saw one dime sized frozen baby shrimp in my enchiladas."

  • "Overall we really liked this place. Cool vibe, interesting menu, quality food & drinks. We just got unlucky with our server who was impersonal and absentee most of the evening. It didn't look like other diners with different servers were having the same issue. And we received excellent service at the bar pre-dinner. So we think/hope this was a one time occurrence. Would still give the place another try if we're ever back in town."

  • "We found this restaurant by accident on one of our visits to San Antonio. They have the most unique salsa. Absolutely love it. Food and atmosphere is great! I highly recommend."

  • "I greatly enjoyed dinner at Acenar with friends before we went to a concert at the Majestic Theatre. The reservation process was very easy. We enjoyed a few drinks at the bar first at happy hour prices. We had a table on the outdoor patio overlooking the river. Our waiter was prompt and courteous. Our food was delicious. I particularly enjoy the chips and salsa. Acenar is my favorite restaurant for pre-theater dinners. I usually order the oyster tacos. They are very flavorful and filing without feeling heavy."

  • "I've been to Acenar a few times now. I was convinced this wasn't the typical Riverwalk Mexican restaurant--not so sure now. (The typical one having bad food and service and full of tourists attracted to colorful umbrellas.) I made reservations over a week in advance and was put next to the hostess stand where there's a ton of traffic and people waiting around. The cheap laminated table was missing a chunk off of the corner--so much for ambiance. The margaritas and mojitos are consistently good, but my wife had chalupas this time which were just boring (what you would expect from the place with the colorful umbrellas.) I had the cabrito which was mostly bones--so still hungry after the $25 goat, I finished my wife's boring chalupas."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed out evening at Acenar. The food was good and plenty of it and the staff was very attentive. Glad we picked this place. Great to sit outside on the River Walk for the evening when it was 10 degrees at home."

  • "First off, the host greeted us very politely and walked us to our table. Short after our waiter arrived very enthusiastic about this restaurant, the food, and our experience! The food was exquisite! Every detail in the presentation of our dinner was on point and are already planning our return. Thank you"

  • "What we were most impressed by was our server, Liz.. She was friendly & attentive, w/o being over-bearing.. The restaurant, itself, is of a very pleasing design.. The chips & salsa was quite good and the queso was excellent (although seemed to be in limited quantity for 2 people).. Entrees COULD have been excellent- but meats (chicken, beef & shrimp) were overdone; flavors were nice.. Drinks sounded like they would have been great (margaritas with choices of salt, sugar or chile salt)- but can't comment since we didn't have any.. A good place to go if you're bar-hopping in downtown San Antonio with the noise levels & seating placement.."

  • "Fall in love with excellent food with a Mexican touch. Delicious corn tortilla chips still warm from the oven with smokey roasted tomato salsa. Try the shrimp nachos was a great change of pace. Service was attentive without being annoying. Large party seated near us was served smoothly with compromising service for the rest of the customers. Enjoyed it and will come back anytime."

  • "Went to Acenar before a show at the Majestic. Food was very good and a good value for the price, we were in and out in about an hour to make the show. The snapper adobo recommended by the waiter was excellent while other tex-mex fare was good, but not outstanding. We almost left the restaurant after a terrible house margarita but switched to the hand shaken and it was much better. They should be ashamed of serving such a bad house margarita in San Antonio. Service was good but a little rushed and the tables are crammed way too close together. The outdoor seating looked better, but it was closed due to the cold weather. Overall, I would recommend if you are looking for a good Tex-Mex place on the Riverwalk that is not too expensive."

  • "Perfect for dinner before a show at the Majestic or Empire. Outdoor dining overlooking a quieter portion of the Riverwalk, away from the touristy area. A different kind of "Mexican food""

  • "The food and service were impeccable. Very personal service. The fresh guacamole was just like momma made. Loud table next to us, but it didn't ruin the evening."
    Dined on 1/23/2014
  • "Very good offerings with good variety. The table-side made guacamole is a must, and the house margarita is special. Definitely a must to rerun."

  • "Good food and drink marred by spotty service. Other tables had better luck but our server disappeared. Nice outdoor seating on the Riverwalk, good for warm evenings."

  • "Horrible service--waiter brought chips & forgot salsa (?) & did not return with any; had to ask another waiter. Ordered margaritas and realized they sat at bar till melted--had to get another waiter to bring. Waiter didn't seem aware of how to make tableside guacamole had to get another server who was delayed--then main course arrived while still eating appetizers. Ambiance disrupted by setup of 2 long banquet tables for late arriving large group. Had called to request river view table for out-of-town quest and confirmed with reservationist when called by restaurant to confirm.... but not even acknowledged. Food was good but certainly not special. Overall a terrible experience; will think twice on returning--especially with guests."
    Dined on 1/21/2014
  • "My only complaint was the lack of their attending to my seating request. I had asked for river front seating in my reservation and it took them 45 minutes for a table to free up even though we were on time for my reservation."
    Dined on 1/18/2014
  • "It is important for newbies to note that Acenar is not TexMex but rather more upscale and "Mexican inspired". While they have enchiladas, tacos and chalupas the seasoning and meats are more sophisticated and there are wonderful surprises like Duck Chalupas. Many of their dishes are based on interior Mexican standards - like Snapper Veracruz. So be prepared ot be adventurous. The guacamole for two (or more) is made tableside and is outstanding. The salsa is one of the best in town. The food is reliably good to great. Recommended!"

  • "This proved an excellent choice for dinner with a colleague. It has an attractive open terrace overlooking a somewhat quieter stretch of the San Antonio River Walk. Good food, helpful staff, relaxed ambience (very comfortable noise level, easy to have a good conversation), and an outstanding signature margarita. Highly recommended!"

  • "Tired of the same old Mex/Tex Mex? Make your way to Acenar. Where you wwill find excellent food and attentive service. A great find. Not to be missed when you visit San Antonio."

  • "While the food was pretty good and our server was attentive and enthusiastic, the noise at least in the downstairs room with a low ceiling and NO acoustic shielding, with tables very close to each other, completely precluded conversation. We had gone with a group of 5 people hoping to catch up with each other, and literally we COULD NOT HEAR anyone other than the person next to us. There were some large groups in the room, and none were being particularly rowdy or loud, the problem was the room itself, not the other diners. We had reserved weeks in advance, and were not warned when we were placed in that room that the noise could be a problem (other rooms while not exactly quiet seemed much more reasonable in terms of noise)."
