Diner Reviews
  • "We were visiting Richmond from Washington DC and this restaurant was recommended by a Richmond local. Our initial contact with our server unfortunately overshadowed the entire experience. We had had a long day and when we he asked for our drink order we ordered cocktails and two appetizers. He immediately told us that the kitchen would only take our entire order versus beginning with an appetizer. My husband suggested that we leave... Ultimately we stayed however, the remainder of the dinner was awkward with the server clearly being standoffish with us. This restaurant's policy is short-sighted as we would have likely had twi cocktails and salads before our entrees. We skipped dessert. Food was slow to arrive. Menu is limited but good."

  • "This was a superb meal for all of us. The rock fish with sweet corn succotash was the best rock fish dish in my memory. All seasonal ingredients, so go quick to get this dish!"

  • "Food and service were good, however we were seated next to the area where a private party was being hosted and the noise level was so loud we could not hear eachother talking. I will think twice before scheduling a business dinner here again"

  • "Our first time and it certainly won't be our last! Really enjoyed the menu variety. Everything was very fresh and creative. The service was outstanding, attentive but not hovering. Truly a wonderful dining experience."

  • "Fabulous! After a nearly 2 year hiatus due to the deafening noise level, we found sound abatement measures are quite successful. We've dined at Acacia twice in about 2 weeks both enjoying the weeknight prixe fixe. Available selections are varied, course portions, perfect and the food excellent in every way! First evening we enjoyed soft shell crab perfectly complimented by the tempura batter, the second evening the crab cake was perfect, nice chunks of crabs loosely held together with complimentary seasonings and ingredients. The soup, french style sweet vidalia onion, and salads are perfect beginnings and the tasty dessert bites the perfect end. The wine list is interesting and varied with fair prices. We will be regulars!"

  • "The civeche is not to be missed...their sefood specials are amazing but I had the duck and it was amazing."

  • "We normally have a select few favorite restaurants we choose for a special occasion. All of them were unable to seat us with our out of town guest. Looking at online reviews, Acacia was pretty well recommended. It has the best crab cake and all of our dishes were perfectly amazing. We'll have to return for a night out again soon."

  • "We heard about the great food here. We were not disappointed. In addition, the staff was super and really helpful at selecting food and wine pairings."

  • "I was really disappointed with the quality of the food. While the presentation was nice, the flavors were not as refined as they should be at this price point. We ordered the duck and the softshell crabs and the porkbelly app. The app was ridiculously tiny. My husband and I started laughing when it arrived at the table. It was served two steamed buns that were also tiny. They were the size of a quarter. The duck was flavorless and the sauce it came with lacked umami. The succotash that was served with the crab was too rich and salty. I couldn't finish it because it started giving me a stomach ache. We will never come here and we told all of our friends not to waste their money. I won't feel like I'm missing a thing if I never go back!"

  • "4 stars out of 4 stars, we've been going to Acacia since it was located many years ago in Cary Town and was super then, its still time and time again the best. The staff is almost like family and the quality of service and the food just keeps getting better and better, its a winner."

  • "I ordered the featured champagne at $18 per glass and it was tasteless and was returned by me explaining why. The wine steward's opinion differed and he thought it was great. Although I ordered the Prosecco as a replacement, after debate and much head shaking, eventually half of the champagne cost was refunded. Bearing in mind the champagne is $35 at retail, I felt this was penny-pinching and petty. The probability is that the champagne was served too cold (as was the Prosecco) and that is why neither tasted as they should. Food was OK, service was reasonable and for the sake of $9 my evening and their reputation was spoiled."

  • "We recently celebrated our 33rd anniversary at Acacia. It was a wonderful experience. The service, the food, the drinks were all excellent and worth the cost. We will certainly return. We especially enjoyed the attentive bartender who was both welcoming and fun to watch prepare our drinks."

  • "This restaurant has always gained some well-earned accolades and our dinner tonight was no exception. We had an interesting drink at the bar while waiting for our table. Tonight happened to be a mini wine pairing event and, since it was also my husband's birthday, I thought this would be festive. The first plate of cold lobster ravioli was excellent; the second of warm mozzarella not so much but I liked the fried green tomato bits. The grouper was fabulous and the pork shoulder was very good. It was sometimes hard to hear because the noise level in any "non-walled" restaurant can get pretty loud. The free valet service was also a plus. We will definitely come back here to sample the regular menu."

  • "The food was excellent but it took too long to receive our cocktails once ordered and the service was a tad too slow. Noise level is too high for a romantic date."
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "My cocktail was described as having strawberry and balsamic reduction in it, but all I could taste was awful bitterness. When I asked to send it back, the waitress insisted on asking the bar tender to adjust it, which he said he couldn't. Then she asked me to order another drink (she didn't want to take it off the check), but our first course had arrived by then and I didn't want it with my meal. She did not take it off the check and she should have! Bartender ego. We had a tasty corn flan appetizer and a disappointing burrata (tough and not creamy at all) with pickled tomatoes. The pickled peach salad was excellent with almonds and ricotta. My friend enjoyed the rockfish with spring vegetables and I had a big and well seasoned crabcake."

  • "I'd been hearing about ACACIA for a long time. Finally bit the bullet and took my wife their for our 5th anniversary dinner. We loved it. My wife is very picky and she had a great time. The service is probably the best I've ever had in Richmond. The ambiance is wonderful. The food was excellent and I loved all the choices on the menu. My only complaint would be that the crab cake with grits & kale was a tad too salty. We are looking forward to going back!"

  • "We dine here at least once a week and Acacia nails it every single time with consistently excellent food and attentive personal service in an energetic atmosphere. The ever changing small plates are creative and approachable. The crab cakes are superb and some of the very best you'll ever have. Wonderful craft cocktails. The prix fixe menu is a daily bargain, especially paired with Tuesdays half price bottle wine night."

  • "The food and decor were exceptional but the outside of this restaurant needs help. The floor looks unkept and unfinished, the tables were dingy looking, as was the podium in front. This does not make this restaurants curb appeal compare with the inside of Acacia. Don't miss this gem"
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "Acacia is a funky, eclectic, urban spot....only thing is outside dining could be a bit bigger and disconnected from the entrance as people are coming in it is somewhat distractive and takes away from what is supposed to be an incredible experience.... other than that, food was ok, crab cake was warm not hot...once i got my correct wine, it was scrumptuous."
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "The crab cakes were exceptional and accompaniments complimented them carb wonderfully. Service was attentive, but not interruptive. Ambiance was nice, but the noise level was nearly too much. Prices were an attractive value."

  • "our server, Lauren was fantastic. she was great down to every detail, the simple things that i don't know if a lot of patrons would notice. like leaving my husband's plate b/c i hadn't finished yet, i never filled up my water b/c she was always one step ahead of me, and when my husband and i left the table to go to the bathroom we came back to folded napkins. the food was phenomenal! my husband and i never order dessert when we go out b/c they're typically frozen and made out of house, but we tried it since everything else was so spot on and i think it was our favorite part. i would reccomend this place to anyone. thank you so much for a great anniversary dinner Acacia!"

  • "Acacia continues to have Richmond's best seafood. The only drawback is the noise level. We went for a birthday celebration and the birthday girl (75 year old) could barely hear us over the background din. Despite the noise she loved the food."

  • "Have tried Acacia twice this spring and each time it's been fantastic. Eric did a really nice job taking care of us. The dishes we had were largely seafood and it was all just delish! Soft shells are in season and they were creatively prepared and much lighter than your average fried version. My grouper was not your typical preparation either from the sauce to how it was butchered and it was excellent. All our dishes had a hint of bacon flavor - YUM! "

  • "A super dining experience all around. I'm not a foodie. I read the menu for the main ingredient in an entree and choose. How it's prepared is largely irrelevant to me. You know, just cook the thing and let me eat. But Acacia is for foodies so I play along. This is where the place shines. One of the best things about Acacia is the service. #1, a lot of long-time professionals among the servers. You want a 4 minute discourse on every ingredient in a dish? You got it. #2, they don't flinch when you gently wave away the start of such waiter-babble. I'm there for the eats not to know the chef's state of mind when he dreamed up the dish. The place is always a winner."

  • "At first we were a little taken back by the fact we had to put our whole order in at one time. My friend and I like to order as we go...and share apps and perhaps get more if we like, before ordering a main course. All that said, the food was amazingly prepared, presented and served. Best place in Richmond!"

  • "Acacia is one of the best restaurants in Richmond and has been for a long time. We credit the chef, Dale Reitzer, for its success. Dale keeps the menu fresh and was instrumental in bringing the farm to table concept to the Richmond dining scene. Acacia sets the bar high - the food is creative and delicious and the service is outstanding. We had four different appetizers and entrees and all were excellent. We highly recommend Acacia!"

  • "I think we have decided that Acacia is our favorite restaurant in all of Richmond. The service is ALWAYS great. Courteous, prompt, know the answers to all of our questions (wine, drinks, food). We were waiting for a friend, so we had time to chat with the bartender who was just a delight. Our friend was coming from out of town and running close to "closing time" but the staff were friendly and attentive and as soon as he arrived they swiftly got our order in! This is the place for fish in the city. No one has fresher. I've made my point."

  • "It was our first time here and we really enjoyed it. The Salmon app was amazing! Awesome idea for the complementary valet. The only negative comment is our server too a little to long getting our drinks. We had our app before our bottle of wine arrived. "

  • "Contemporary setting which I like, noise level high. Just ordered appetizers and salad as we had a late lunch. Oysters on half shell were fair, salmon ceviche was different- lots of avocado, not much salmon and it was more like a mousse, roasted beet salad wasn't roasted, beets were pickled. Server didn't have a good answer as to why. My cocktail was delicious. Acacia came recommended by a friend so I will try again and try an entree"

  • "My wife and I had dinner on a busy Saturday evening. It was too noisy to talk without shouting at each other. My smoked bluefish appetizer and crab cake entree were excellent. My wife's salad, however, had too little dressing, but her scallops were good. We both had the "Apple pie" dessert and it was awful. The filling was tasteless and the crust was fried with a taste that can only be described as greasy. When we told the waitress that we didn't enjoy the dessert, she mumbled something along the lines that, yeah, it's not very good. Why didn't she warn us when we ordered two of them? After we paid the bill, the hostess asked us how our meal had been. When we explained, she brusquely wished us a good evening. That's it. "

  • "Acacia accommodated us at their communal table, on a very busy weekend in Richmond; 2 graduations & mothers day. Booked one month ahead. Really wonderful selections on early price fixed menu. Most helpful with dietary sensitivities. Everyone of the party of 8, raved about all three courses. Only negative; paid $30+ for someone who could not attend and could not notify within 24(?) hours. "

  • "Delicious and creative dishes, accompanied by excellent service. My only complaint is the background music (too techno for my taste), but it would not keep me from returning for another wonderful meal in the future."
    Dined on 5/9/2014
  • "Okay guys, the food is good but not so much better than other places where you can actually hear your tablemates. I know high music keeps people from lingering and let's you turn tables faster, but I'll go elsewhere for awhile where the dining experience is more enjoyable. The people next to us were complaining also."
