Diner Reviews
  • "Made reservations to celebrate my partner's 30th birthday and it was great! The food was perfectly cooked and just the right portions to save room for a couple cocktails and dessert. Definitely a place to celebrate and relax in a romantic atmosphere. Service was outstanding--perfect balance of checking in with us and allowing us space to enjoy the ambiance and each other!"

  • "This is the fifth time we've been to Absinthe, and it's consistently excellent, both food and service. It offers a wide variety of food from oysters to mac & cheese. The chicken liver mousse appetizer is delicious. A notable service is valet: you can leave your car at the door and pick it up after the opera or concert six hours later for $15. (Plus a tip to the young man doing the work.) All service is performed efficiently and cheerfully. One criticism: the pleasant front room is very noisy, especially for old ears. The back room isn't as attractive, but is quiet. We will go back."

  • "They had a variety of food exceptions and were able to find plenty of things to choose from. Everything was delicious and we all tried several cocktails."

  • "I've eaten here several times late at night, on a weekend, or for dinner during the week. There isn't a single dish that my company and I have not thoroughly enjoyed. The service is very attentive, and the wines are reasonably priced. Overall, excellent French bistro fare with some Californian touches. Highly recommend!"

  • "I have been dining here for years and love coming back every time. Attentive service, creative food, great wine list."

  • "superior in nearly every way a restaurant can be. excelently prepared canard; outstanding waitservice by always noting our needs but never asking rather, instead, acting upon our needs before we could ask."

  • "Delicious innovative food. The panna cotta was dreamy."

  • "Have an onion allergy, most of the menu items had onions so opted for the burger. Nothing special, not organic. Arrived after nearly an hour wait. Was a Thu evening at 9:00PM. Arrived and fries were cold and no tomato on the burger, just cheese as requested and a single leaf of lettuce. I had it sent back and requested tomato and hot fries. Meanwhile my companion's dinner of swordfish was served so they started eating. Burger arrived with tomato and fries a few minutes later. Was told they re-made the burger but impossible as it was just lukewarm. Bill arrived and the tomato was $1.50 extra plus cheese for $1.50=$18.00! Given the entrée had to be sent back and no recognition of that fact = ego and greed! Business is robust=quality suffers."

  • "Decent burger. Everything else we had was extremely salty. Diasppointed. The Service was less than warm."

  • "Absinthe continues to be the number 1 choice for fine dining before a cultural event in the Civic Center area for my wife and me. Particularly excellent sommeliers. Their wine list is a team effort."

  • "Look, you get what you pay for. We had two appetizers, two main dishes, and two after dinner drinks and the bill was (less the wine) about $250 with tip. If you skip the grappa, you could probably get it down to $200 including tip. The chicken liver mousse (appetizer) was extremely tasty, and both of the mains (steak and coq au vin) were perfectly prepared; the sauce on the chicken was superb. Service, if this can be called a complaint, was actually quite attentive and a bit too fast... we had all evening, but clearly the wait-staff were expecting us to be headed to the theater so they were paying close attention. You might want to let them know that you are not in a hurry if you don't have symphony/theater tickets about to explode..."

  • "They have 6 sections: Raw, Snack, Appetizers, Entreés, Sides, and Cheese, cheese, cheese 6 kinds. Definitely a menu for foodies. And the wine we got was so good that we're looking for it: a Joseph Cellers sauvignon blanc. It is properly dry, but has this lovely peach aroma. Their cheeses are so enticing that I can make a meal of them. Highly recommended. Get reservations!"

  • "We had an early dinner at Absinthe after the opera. The staff were warm, friendly, and professional. The food was excellent. The peach salad we had for a starter was unusual and delicious. Highly recommended."

  • "It was our first time at Absinthe, and I can't recommend it highly enough. We chose it to be close to the Opera House so we could relax, enjoy a great dining experience, and still have time to make our show. We sat in the bar for a little while to enjoy the sun shining through all the colorful bottles and take in the "neighborhood scene", then moved to our table in a little nook of the cozy, attractive dining room. The menu is scrumptious. Each course was perfectly prepared and served....and if you're going for a really special occasion, be sure to get the caviar...with all the right accompaniments, and delicious. GREAT gourmet food, the service was impeccable, and the timing of the meal was too. After one time, it's a favorite."

  • "Over from the UK with a tour and five nights in San Francisco. Chose this restsurant as it was close to San Francisco Symphony Orchestra Hall and we were going to a concert there. Possibly more upmarket and slightly morr expensive than I would have expected ftom reviews but then we each had a couple of different alcoholic drinks so fine really. Restaurant was packed and buzzing. Food great and service excellent apart from first half hour when no-one approached us and er had to do the approaching. Flurry of apologies and service great and apologetic thereafter. Highly recommended."

  • "if AB raised their food a notch i would be one of the best in SF. i dine here frequently, its a great location and ambience, service usually very good."

  • "Absinthe seems to not quite know what it wants to be. The front room is a hopping and bar that is busy and noisy at all hours. The bulk of the dining tables are in the back rooms, which have different decor and are a bit quieter. The menu has a bit of everything; some of the dishes are better than others. Service also varies; the pre-theater crush may have some impact on that. Great cocktail menu. It's become a reliable Civic Center pre-theater dining option."

  • "We always come to Absinthe for our most special occasions-- birthdays, anniversaries, graduations etc. We love the ambiance, great service, and fantastic food. This evening was wonderful, as usual. Leisurely meal, fabulous dishes (the coq au vin has to be the best in town), and exceptional service. And it's not too noisy!"

  • "I have been to most of the restaurants near the opera, symphony, Jazz Center many times. It has been a while since I have visited Absinthe. It was by far the most expensive, poorest quality food I have experienced. $30+ entrees should be a dining experience not insufferable. I don't drink and maybe that is the problem............ I'm too alert"

  • "My lunch companion and I could hardly hear each other in the back room of the restaurant - previously I've eaten in the bar area which is significantly less noisy. This was really unpleasant and I would not go back even though the food was excellent."
    Dined on 6/19/2014
  • "We've eaten here many times. On a weekday lunch the service was less attentive, mostly because they had a large party in s separate room. The lunch choices were a little less interesting than what we're used to at brunch. My partner had the pastrami sandwich which he thought was ok, but not notable. I had something resembling a Cuban sandwich, same reaction. All in all it's still the place to go in the Hayes Valley, Civic Center area, when band/buck is your major factor. Just don't get stuck on your own expectations."

  • "We love to have dinner here whenever we are in the area, it is always delicious, great drinks and the service is wonderful. We feel like it is a little night in France, ambiance and all."

  • "And now the dining room too! We had a superb experience all around. Tremendous food--i had the thin-sliced lamb, he had a steak and both were outstanding. Salad, dessert was too. This place has been around a while ans STILL on top!"

  • "This place is by far the best restaurant we have been to in SF city. We went there for date night with another couple and the setting was perfect. The food was exceptional, the cocktails were unique, the wine list was great, service was excellent and the atmosphere was perfect. Every single dish we tried was different and the flavors were unique and spot on. It was definitely a memorable night!"

  • "It was with pleasure that I made a reservation during the recent Dine About Town week at Absinthe Brasserie and Bar. My party found the pork tenderloin to be very good and the dessert was encouragement to return very soon."

  • "This was a fabulous find! We had a couple of changes in our reservations and the restaurant handled them without any problem when I called. We had a slightly indecisive member in our group, and our server handled everything very patiently and professionally. The food was prepared perfectly and was absolutely wonderful! We will definitely be back."

  • "I am not sure what is it that I love about Absinthe. I find the menu to be somewhat limited (not a lot of choices) and sometimes it's very noisy. But I love the energy of the restaurant and the friendliness of the staff. They are all about the customer! I just feel happy when I am there and the food is fun and interesting. I think I like lunch at Absinthe the best. Although we have spent many a early night at the bar with a good glass of wine and the Steak Frites. This restaurant remains one of my most favorite restaurants in the city."

  • "We wanted to try the Dine About Town thing, so we reserved through Open Table Dine About Town website, and came all the way here, coz it's one of the few that's open for lunch. After we were seated, I asked the waiter for the Dine About Town menu, he said we don't have it. I told him I made this reservation through the event website, he was like "I don't know what website you looked at, but I don't have a menu for you." Later a lady came to apologize and said their event actually ended yesterday, Open Table probably made a mistake through the booking system. And she gave us an appetizer on the house. Food was great, and not expensive. But I was irritated by the waiter's lazy attitude, he should have known better about what's going on."

  • "Regularly lunch at table 77 and love the croque mis. and pot au creme dessert. This time with grandsons, burgers arrived incorrectly two different times... and were told it would be a long wait to redo. The service was inept - not at all our usual experience. We declined dessert fearing it would take forever. Check arrives and to the charge for the burger, an added chg of $1.50 for cheese and 1.50 for tomato slice. We are in shock. How sad to have to give up going to a place we have loved!"

  • "As a party of one, I felt a bit ignored. My table was positioned in such a way that everyone bumped it while walking by. My waitress was very nice and efficient, but took a while to get there. No one offered water or bread while I waited. However, the wine and food were very good. And the dessert was excellent. The restaurant was cozy, and the view wasn't bad, but wasn't good from where I was sitting--I had to turn around to look out the window. I would definitely return, with another person, and ask for a table by the window. And, order that dessert again."

  • "We were lucky enough to be seated in the quiet "private" room. Service was leisurely and efficient. We shared a delicious chicken liver mousse, and then I had pork cheeks while my wife had leg of lamb. It was all delicious. This is the best restaurant in the Symphony area."

  • "I have a love hate relationship with Absinthe. The food is amazing, totally delicious and rich in taste. Order the Coq au Vin! What gets me everytime about this place though is the lack of service. Not sure if they are understaffed with servers but of the three times we went it seems as though our servers were off somewhere else. On our most recent visit we waited 15 minutes after getting sat until we saw anyone. I've had servers in the past that have been really crabby, one that even added more tip (above the 20% we left) which my mom found after she returned home from visiting. If it wasn't for the food I would not return. Just be prepared for long periods of waiting inbetween the times where you do actually see your server."
