Diner Reviews
  • "I had requested the seat we had a few months ago and was given that seat - I was so happy. It's just a wonderful place for a special occasion. Thanks !"

  • "I hadn't been to Absinthe for a couple of years, but it didn't disappoint. Even with the crush of pre-ballet performance dining, it was calm and well-paced. Waitstaff was friendly and attentive. Food was simply excellent--unusual enough to be interesting, but not so weird that you're left wondering "What were they thinking?" Even though my companion chose a non-chocolate dessert to share, it was really delicious (and I didn't miss the chocolate). It is really nice to see that at least one longtime favorite hasn't let its standards slip."

  • "I've spent most time here bellied up to the bar - they have fantastic cocktails. I have also had brunch here a couple times - always good. Had a special night out here recently and had a solid experience. Monk fish was very good - nice blend of sweet and savory in the dish. My fiancee had the Coq au vin with a super deep flavor base. The servers were knowledgeable and friendly. Room is really loud, but still enjoyed the evening. There's a reason it has been a staple of the neighborhood - they continually deliver solid food in a nice atmosphere with great wine and cocktails."

  • "Our three experiences were each superb. The service was warm and friendly. Each time the foods were far above our expectations. The quality of the service was impeccable. What more can we say? Except we'll certainly be back."

  • "I have been to Absinthe several times over the years and the food is always fabulous. The servers have been familiar with the food to help me make choices, available at the right times, and patient with my needs for a fast/slow/complicated dinner experience. It's hard to get a reservation on short notice, but if you can plan ahead I would strongly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Although we arrived 20 minutes past our reservation, but were seated immediately (albeit in the cafe). I had a delicious croque Madame and oysters with a glass of fresh grapefruit juice. It was delicious and the service was better than my first experience with Absinthe. Beautiful atmosphere and people enjoying their Saturday all around!"

  • "We had : Seafood Ceviche Beef Tartare Onion Soup Gratinee Angus Beef Filet The food was good. The filet was tender. I expected a little more from the tartare though. The ceviche was soooo yummy, wish I had some more right now. The service was ok, our waitress was friendly. We came here for my boyfriend’s birthday so I guess I expected a little bit more from the service. In my opinion, this is a nice place for a nice dinner out or feeling fancy with friends but not really a 'special occasion' kind of place."

  • "Everything was very good but the noise level was intolerable. I don't think we will be going back. I couldn't hear anything my wife said and she was not more than 2 feet away. Too many choices in that area where we can hear ourselves talk to one another. Energetic I can put up with. This was for those who want to talk to each other better know sign language. We don't!"

  • "This restaurant has a great selection of artisan/ craft drinks. The food is really good as well. Will definitely return when coming back to San Feancisco."

  • "Great old-school atmosphere. Fun cocktail menu. Gracious staff. Delicious food. Convenient for pre-show dining near the Opera House and Symphony Hall."

  • "I can't comment on the quality of the wine list or bar because I don't drink anymore, although my friends say they're great, I can say that I like going to Absinthe because I know I'm going to get what I expect: great food from pleasant people. I have yet to have tried anything from them that hasn't been exactly what I wanted or expected. Absinthe is in my top ten, now and when I considered myself a Foodie. Cheers!"

  • "Very good and creative cuisine. Also friendly and casual service. However my pet peeve was again employed when my food was served before I got my wine. This always seems to happen here in the states."

  • "Absinthe is clearly popular and we understand why. The restaurant was almost full when we arrived for brunch, but they did have a table reserved for us. The menu choices were good, a nice variety of breakfast and lunch items. We enjoyed our meal choices and the service was very good. We will definitely keep this restaurant in our active file."

  • "Everything is on point here: Food was tasty and unique. The duck confit or as I call it the "duck benedict" is delicious although a bit heavy because of the potato patty and the hollandaise but still worth a try. The pretzel appetizer is a MUST: so soft and warm... i wanted this all to myself. Griled cheese with mushrooms was also pretty delicious. Drinks here were also delicious and plentiful. So many delicious cocktails and drinks to choose from that I spent more time deciding what to drink than to eat. The one criticism was the rude hostess that was being difficult to one of the members of our party upon arrival. The hostess apparently was confused about our seating location or something to that extent."

  • "We used to live in this neighbourhood and after we moved to Sunset district we keep coming here once in a while. And that's a big deal because we don't like to drive across town to eat."

  • "We had a great brunch with some out of town friends--I highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "Never disappointed here. Whenever I fly in to San Francisco for business I try and stop by Absinthe. Great food and a good scene. Loved the big wine list as well."

  • "As vegetarians, it's challenging to find superior and unique menus. Absinthe was all this and MORE--superb Appetizers, wine and entrees. Only weak link was dessert-- dairy over-dose in every item. This was our first visit to the SFJazz CENTER. Dinner at Absinthe dramatically enhanced our 23 hour experience in the BAY!"

  • "i had not dined here in years and was pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the food and service were. We were there for Sunday brunch and the menu had great selections of breakfast items as well as lunch options.. We'll be back!"

  • "Had a great time on a double date here. Will definitely come back, but try not spend $300 next time"

  • "I arrived at Absinthe to discover they had no record of my reservation. Fortunately, they had room for us. The hostess didn't seem too interested in the cause of the mistake because she had space available. The impression lingered that perhaps she believed me to be dishonest, something I find irritating indeed. Henceforth, do I need to write down confirmation numbers and print out confirmation e-mails each time I book through OpenTable? Peter Hanson"

  • "Absinthe is a special kind of place for special events and special food. The decor is simply gorgeous, from the Art Deco wall sconces to the round tables set into the snaky curved, deep red/ violet booths. The wait staff is well-trained and completely professional; with this kind of beautiful ambience, one would expect no less. But it is for the food that the diner really comes to eat in Absinthe. Last week, a friend and I split one of the delicious appetizer cheeses, which are complemented by the perfect jam and served with small walnut toasts. She had the monkfish, firm but reminiscent of lobster and served in an incredible herb sauce. I spoiled myself with the house made gnocchi in a rich mushroom and cheese sauce. Magnificent!p"

  • "French food, wine and restaurant culture are close to my heart and Absinthe is a beautiful Californian take on the classic bistro style. The ambiance is romantic and relaxing (in the main room, the overflow tables near the bar are BAD), making it a perfect spot for a special amorous occasion, or if you just feel like treating yourself. I tend to go for the classics here -- liver pate, steak tartar, the potato crusted salmon, rib eye steak -- you really can't go wrong. I will say I've had mixed experiences with the cocktails though, so I stick with the wine. The selection is considerable! One word of advice, order a Sauternes with your cheese course, or with a tangy, dairy influenced dessert (like the goat cheese tart). Thank me later :)"

  • "I like this restaurant. It's a nice place to go before a symphony, opera, or just for a romantic dinner. Generally the food is good, they have a good bartender, and the service is excellent. My only negative comment is that the coq au vin I had during my last visit was terrible. Maybe I am misunderstanding something about the dish, but having ordered it at many restaurants in France etc., this was something different - kind of a thick stew. It could have been off that night, or perhaps that's just the way this restaurant does it (the waitress didn't see the problem), but I found it virtually inedible. The rest of the meal was fine, however."

  • "Did apps and drinks here on a week night. Relaxing vibe, great food, drinks are well made. Service was good, and definitely plan on coming back. Not cheap, but worth what you get and the bistro feel."

  • "We have been to Absinthe before and usually had very good meals and service, but this time the food was mediocre and the service was very bad. We told the waitress up front that we wanted cheese/dessert but then we waited half an hour for our first course and barely got our entree in time to finish before leaving to arrive on time for the performance. Nonetheless the server asked us about cheese/dessert with only 20 minutes before curtain time and it's doubtful that we would have even received our food before the curtain went up!"

  • "Went here for my birthday dinner and even with my limited diet, I found something to love. The wait staff was attentive, sometimes overly so."

  • "I was looking for a diverse menu when I was searching for SF restaurants and found Absinthe to really deliver. We ordered a cheese platter with three different cheeses and they were all amazing. Entrees were also great. Overall, we had a really great time at this restaurant and our bellies left very satisfied."

  • "Absinthe is a very cool place in the heart of Hayes Valley. We had a reservation for two at 5 p.m.. Every restaurant around was booked solid, and we had tickets for a performance at the Nourse Theater at 7:30. Coming from the East Bay on a Friday night can be unpredictable, and we were stuck in terrible traffic, delaying our arrival until 6 p.m. We were certain we would not be able to eat and make the performance, but the Absiinthe hostess told us they had saved our table for us. What a welcome surprise!. We went right to our table, enjoyed a fantastic cocktail and a leisurely light dinner with plenty of time to get across the street to the theater. Great service and great location!"

  • "I rarely order the same thing twice at a restaurant, but in this case I always order the same lunch: a soup followed by the arctic char or salmon with a thin potato crust. Both are always outstanding. The soup varies (this time it was carrot bisque) but is always tasty and beautifully garnished. The fish has a lovely crunchy potato crust and is perfectly moist and tender inside, and comes with a nicely dressed small salad. I love it!"
