A word from A16 - San Francisco
A16 is a restaurant and wine bar bringing the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania to San Francisco. The chic, rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses
the South of Italy. The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.

  • "First time to A16 but it won't be the last. Service was seamless at lunch! Glasses were never empty, we were asked if we were doing fine multiple times and waitstaff along with front of the house had very helpful suggestions on what to order. The quality of the raw ingredients and the care with which the food was prepared was amazing. The wood-fired oven crust on the pizza was the perfect combination of chewiness and puffiness but yet appropriately thin. Food was not only excellent but beautifully plated as well. This could very well become one of my regular lunch haunts! Looking forward to my next visit hopefully for dinner!"

  • "Our group of five lunched on Wednesday - always fascinating, as it is usually the day meat is being broken down in the kitchen behind the lunch counter. We had a rinside table to see and hear the action. The main course was, as always, excellent and the "icing on the cake" was that we previewed a new dessert addition, strawberry walnut crumble, that was to be added to the menu that evening. A16 is an outstanding addition to the San Francisco restaurant scene."

  • "I have enjoued a lot of foodie fabulous gourmet pizza including wonderful pizzas enjoyed in Italy. I've beenwher to A-16 three times now and I honestly feel the pizza is just average. I don't get why everyone raves. It's doughy and not particularly vibrant or tasty in any remarkable way. Also the back room where we the unfortunate experience of being seated this time was so hot in temperature as to be completely uncomfortable. They told me there was air conditioning on but it must've been 80 in there. The noise level is also very high."

  • "We visited A16 for our 10 year wedding anniversary. They made the night so special for us. Our server was very good at describing their Italian wines for us that we weren't familiar with....I loved the one she recommended that I got to go with my fish entrée. My husband really enjoyed the pizza he ordered and I loved the Arctic char. Amazing!!!!!"

  • "The yellowtail crudo appetizer had a musty, odd smell and taste--not spoiled, but unappetizing. We told the waitress and she apologized and very pleasantly removed the plate and told us there would be no charge. The pasta was absolutely the worst plate of pasta I have ever eaten--anywhere--and I'm including the Kraft macaroni & cheese box I used to make as a teenager. I'm not being facetious. It was a tasteless brick of starch. Service was good, ambiance nice, and sound level not too loud. The peach melba dessert with raspberries was also good. A very up and down evening that we won't repeat any time soon. I have to give the food a single star even though it was not all bad, but the bad was VERY bad."

  • "We have been to A16 a number of times and are used to mediocre service. We come back for the good food and location. We won't anymore though. The unpleasant atmosphere and snarky servers and manager make it impossible to enjoy the food. Our latest lunch experience was very unpleasant. Everything from slow service and rude waiters to long black hairs in our soup and on our pizza make A16 the last place we will go for a meal in the future."

  • "Maybe because people said it was so good, or maybe because I love SPQR, I was expecting a better experience. For me, the menu was small. Perhaps it was my mood, but I had a hard time finding anything I really wanted to eat. I ordered the proscuitto and figs (a starter) as a main course. I had the melon salad to start; it was light and tasty. I felt pack in. The table of 4 to our right left during our meal; they wanted to break it into 2 tables of 2, so they moved our table closer to the table to our left. It was unpleasant to get smooshed during our meal. A16 is one of the few restaurants not respectful of my note that I am very allergic to fragrances - to please try to seat us somewhere a bit isolated. My meal was ruined due!!"

  • "There is lots to love about this place. The menu is interesting and well executed. The cured meats starter is not to be missed. The Macaronara is chewy and hearty. The Kohlrabi salad was on the menu and was so well balanced. It is especially good with the cured meats so order one of each and share it all. The service was not only good and efficient, but smart. Our server and all the other staff were attentive and knew what to do when. The wine is top flight -- and an unbelievable number of them available by the glass and carafe -- what a nice change from most restaurants. I never let anyone choose wine for me but felt our server was up to the task and knew more than I did about the extensive offerings. Outstanding choices!"

  • "We enjoyed our dinner so much that we actually went back the next afternoon for lunch for the Fungi Pizza which is the restaurants signature pizza. It was absolutely outstanding as was the dinner the night before. Our wait person was very knowledge about the menu as well as the extensive wine list. The wine he recommended was superb Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "We had olive and octopus appetizers. The olives were very good as well as the octopus. They didn't give much octopus, so expect maybe 6-12 dime size slices with some crushed olives and a yummy sauce. Need to ask for their delicious bread to catch the sauce. Had Margarita pizza which the cheese was way too runny. Also had a pizza with olives and white sauce that was better but had quite a few "dry" spots with just crust. Also tried squid pasta and arrabiata pasta. Both pasta were a bit over done and cold. Service was excellent though and they didn't even rush our party of 5 and stayed for 3 hours before the 7/4 fireworks. The cookie dessert, chocolate tart and caffe latte were excellent too. Total cost $218 with tip."

  • "Went to A16 earlier this week while on vaca. Being a bit of a foodie and from Chicago was excited to check out A16. Could not have been more disappointed! Although we made reservations several weeks out; we were shocked that they sat us in a tiny, undecorated room that had a party of 16 people. Being that the room was crazy small and the large party was having a lot of fun, the noise level was unbearable... We asked our server for bread when we ordered drinks, and again when she brought our cocktails and then when our food was served. 3x's a charm.We also asked if they could prepare the gnocchi without the goat segu. Had to ask a second time before getting a response. The food itself was fine, nothing special...just like the experience."

  • "A16 was my favorite neighborhood spot for the last couple of years, although I was unable to get a reservation as often as I would have liked. This time I got a table just two days in advance and was surprised. Will never go again. Went for a nice date night. The day prior, I got a call (vm) asking me to reconfirm my reservation. I called to confirm. When we arrived, the hostess let us stand around for a couple of minutes before giving us her unsmiling attention. She asked for our name. Then asked for it again. Then asked how to spell it. Then asked how to spell it again. Then asked what our name was. All this time, never a smile, never an apology. Finally she decided to give us a table. We sat there for 20 minites before a waiter came."

  • "I love A16 and have been many times. I usually leaving saying "we need to go more often." This was not the case after this visit. Our server was nice and helpful but often hard to find and not quick to keep our wine glasses full. The burrata was creamy and luxurious as always but the pizza crust was a but soggy and not crisp like it normally would be. The pastas when they arrived seemed gummy and a bit dry. I tried the squid ink pasta and the duck Sufi. The squid ink had great flavors and was my favorite dish of the night. The duck sushi was gummy and dry. I would not order it again. My friend order the pork chop and was not disappointed. It was huge and flavorful but perhaps about dry. I will still go back but maybe not as quickly."

  • "I love A-16. This trip I stopped by for lunch and, as always, it was terrific. We had bruschetta, olives, meatballs, and a mushroom pizza, along with a nice bottle of wine. The kitchen didn't miss a beat. (The mushroom pizza is my favorite anywhere.) The service (Deva) was impeccable--friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. Go!"

  • "Visiting SF and going to A16 was a pleasure. Our waitress was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable. We choose our food and she recommended the best wines to go with it. It was a perfect match. My only complaint was trying to find parking - it took us over 30 minutes and they were about to give away our table - but they understood and accommodated us. Would clearly go back again."

  • "We'd not eaten at A16 in several years so we thought it might be nice for a pre-movie dinner. We had a 5:30PM reservation, arrived few minutes early and waited for our three other guests to arrive. The staff could not have been nicer, including our server, Brandi. Our group all started with the sausage pizza and then followed with the bucatini pasta. The pizza was very tasty, hot and juicy. The bucatini was way undercooked to the point we almost sent it back, were it not for the time constraints of getting to the theater. My subjective observation is that A16 is one of those places where people go more to be "seen" than being discerning about the food. Prices are very high for what you get."

  • "We had just driven a long way to San Francisco that day, and were fairly tired, so I try to keep in mind this may have colored our experience. The restaurant is narrow and the waiting area is very cramped and crowded, feeling like you're staring over the shoulders of those at the bar. Depspite having reservations, we still waited a bit and were then seated at a bar with other people, overlooking the kitchen area. No choice was given, and I think we were just happy to have a seat so no protest was made. No room to do anything with my purse, so I balanced it on my knees. Noise level was pretty high making it impossible for the waitress to tell the group the specials, so she just told me and I passed along the info. Food was good though."

  • "First, we had a good time here. Got to the place early. Went to the bar area, and the guy was very knowledgable about the wines and got us a good introduction and picked out a good wine for dinner. Sitting for dinner, the restaurant is kind of divided into sections. We were in the very back area. About 6-8 tables in the area. Worked out great for us. We got a selection of appetizers and two of us got pasta dishes and two of us the main dishes. I must say, the appetizers were the best part of the meal. Wish we had just gotten more and split everything. Pasta's were good also. Main dishes were also good, but not as tasty and worth the price as the other dishes. If we go back, it will be to share dishes with close friends."

  • "The Burrata: Good, how can you miss? The asparagus soup: Tasteless broth; it could have been dish water. Margarita pizza: It was swimming wet; it could have been pizza soup. When Shelly was there it was excellent. You need a new chef and perhaps new management. You won't see me again as a past experience was similar."

  • "I believe the restaurant was going thru a chef change, the food was inconsistent. The octopus and clam appetizers were great. The gnocci pasta was lacking flavor and the asparagus soup was not a creamy soup of asparagus but a watery broth with a few asparagus stems and peas. We tried a peach Crostada for dessert but were dissapointed by the lack of peach and overwhelming lemony icy gelato that was on top. We would go again but stick to pizza and appetizers."

  • "Went here on an anniversary and was placed in the farthest back table outside which wasn't ideal. Soon enough however, the sunset and the outside turned into a romantic dim dining spot. It was private, quiet and romantic - do it turned out to be a good thing! Each dish was a suitable portion and was more delicious than I had imagined. The staff was very friendly, non-pretentious and so helpful. I would highly recommend this gem to small groups who enjoy authentic light Italian fare."

  • "Our second trip to A16 was better than our first one years ago because this time we had a third person to share plates! We had a wonderful pizza (with buffalo mozzarella substituted), a great gnocchi, the soup, and some salads. All were great, and everything was recommended by our fabulous server who also had a deep knowledge of their wines, price points, and how they would pair with this small meal."
