The service was very good, but just a little too relentless; they were cheerful, helpful, but too many people checking on us too often. We also had to stop someone from clearing dishes two or three times because we weren't finished.

An inviting room and good humored efficient service combine with a very limited menu and reasonably high prices to make me ambivalent about coming back. I've been at A10 three times now and have exhausted the choices I like. Each dish is very well done, no question, but I have trouble figuring out what to get for a balanced meal. To repeat: There are real positive elements. The staff is friendly and I really like the room and each particular dish is well done. Hyde Park needs a restaurant like this and the prices, while high, are not out of line for the sort of restaurant to which A10 aspires.

A10's sharing menu is full of well-crafted, original, and delicious items--the Escargot Pot Pie was particularly memorable. Additionally, the restaurant has a good vibe to it and the servers are very attentive. However, while the food is top-notch, the portions even on the theoretically "entree-sized" dishes are pretty small, and the prices are steep. When you leave A10, either you stomach or your wallet will be empty. Additionally, our service was very quick--almost too quick. Me and my date ordered four dishes, which came out rapid fire--our entire dining experience only lasted 40 minutes from start to finish, which made for an abbreviated date.

The food was solid and tasty, but not amazing. Seasonings seemed a little off--I had the kale salad, which was just a little too puckeringly tart, and the double-fried fries (essentially a poutine) where the flavors were a little drowned out by the mustard. Service was okay, not amazing. It felt a little expensive for what we got.

The service at the restaurant was fantastic, esp. by Hyde Park standards. This was my third time going for dinner at this restaurant and I came away with the same opinion that I had before. The food was OK, maybe a bit over priced. The drinks were great, esp. their cocktails - these are really good - order one and you will not regret it. Overall the experience was a good one, but a bit short of the great one. A bit of work on the food and it can be really good addition to Hyde Park.

The food was exceptional. Loved the smaller plates for sharing and chance to try more on the menu. Although there were a lot of servers on the floor, they seemed to chat at the kitchen and doorway rather than check in on us. But, I can overlook that for the quality of the food!

  • Another Hit for Merges!
    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 11/14/2014
Matthias Merges, the proprietor of Yusho and Billy Sunday in Logan Square is now filling a desperate need for eateries and hot spots in Hyde Park. I've never understood how such a unique location around one of the greatest institutions of higher learning in the world, is such a barren wasteland for eating and nightlife. Congrats to Merges for figuring it out and opening another Yusho, and A10! The vibe at A10 is hip and vibrant, the cocktails are fantastic, deserts are unique and tasty, wine list is interesting and includes an educated sommelier who is genuinely helpful. I love the idea of smaller plates and sharing, but I have to admit to being the slightest bit disappointed in a few items, and the menu really needs to be a bit more informative--don't expect the simple items described, there's much more to each dish and if you have any allergies be certain to inform your waiter. I found the lobster orecchiette a bit under seasoned, and the confit of duck leg a bit over salted, but in general that could just be my palate. The raviolo, smoked salmon bruschetta, and honey mussels were wonderful, the squash soup and country bacon pizza delicious. We did try the double fried frites which were also good, but just a few steps short of being a great poutine. We tried all the deserts and each was fantastic with everyone having their individual favorites--mine was the goat cheese mousse! A10 utilizes a multiple server approach with a sommelier, runners for food, water boys, and everything else, so until you’re settled and figure out who’s taking your order it can be a bit confusing. I don’t believe we had the strongest primary waiter, so we leaned on the sommelier to learn specials and get information. I’ve already been to A10 a number of times and intend to head back. It’s a great spot in a severely underserved area. There’s already Promontory and Pork Chop restaurants and bars following Merges lead, with hopefully more to come!

The food and service at A10 are very good. But the wine list is pretentious. And the good food can be even better. On my most recent visit, the poutine appetizer and chocolate-chip donuts dessert were superb. But the merguez (with gnocchi) dish needed some help: thinner, tighter sausages (like a real merguez) and something else--such as tomatoes--to lighten up the dish and the pan-drippings sauce. I look forward to improvements in their fare and to this becoming one of the neighborhood's gems.

A10 has had its ups and downs, but its decision to dispense with lunch and focus on a more interesting and meaningful dinner menu has been a great success. Dinner on Tuesday night was just excellent. We started with the roasted garlic and homemade focaccia accompanied by a lovely Malbec. The focaccia was delicious and the garlic, laced in balsamic and oil, was perfect. We then moved to a raviolo that was accompanied by greens and pine nuts. Scrumptious. The main course was a beautiful porterhouse pork chop with roasted apple that pretty much melted in the mouth. We topped it off with a banana pot de creme that was smooth and perfectly balanced with banana slices and cream. The service was attentive and thoughtful. We were delighted!

The food was delicious and the service was great. I live in the area and this was my first time there. I had eaten a light breakfast and nothing else during the day so by the time I got to A10 I was very hungry. The food was very good just not enough of it, after having a desert that I shared with my husband I was still hungry. There were 4 of us and the waitress brought 4 small plates and suggested that we share our dishes with each other and didn't give us the choice. I didn't like that idea as I wasn't interested in what the others ordered. I had the Duck Leg and try sharing that with 3 other people. I suppose the reason that I was still hungry! Offer the this as an option but don't assume that everyone is interested in sharing.

The service was very slow and bordered on inattentive. When we paid it turned out that the IT system was down and we had to sign a paper credit card chit which had to be hand written by the waiter. It would have been helpful if we had been informed of the situation in the very beginning so that our expectations for the experience could have been set. We have been served by this waiter before and he has always been good but this time was different. I will say that we were unaviodably 15 minutes late (which I hate to do) and that was well acommodated.

Having a daughter at U of Chicago - we are always on the look out for a good restaurant in Hyde Park. This was suppose to be one of the best but it was hardly that. Extremely loud, the menu was limited and the food pedestrian. It comes off as pretentious with no substance. Much better food is served at Chant or Medici's.

I celebrated a special occasion at A10 and overall I was happy with my choice. Three of us enjoyed the food, atmosphere and personal service. The server (Randy) and the rest of the staff also assisted in making sure water glasses stayed full and answered any questions we had with the menu or just the restaurant in general. All the food was really good we had the Stuffed Shells, A10 burger & the Scallops. I had the scallops and although they were great I wish I had more of them.

I ended up being pleasantly surprised and we had a wonderful evening (reviews not consistent so not sure)! I thoroughly enjoyed the food I had: Tuscan Kale for appetizer, and the Pork Porterhouse were both fabulous, and loved the Ricotta Donuts. Every bite was delicious. The Kale was plenty for two of us, although we both admitted we could have eaten the entire thing ourselves--so fresh, so tasty. The pork was cooked to perfection, juicy, melted in my mouth. My friend had the smaller size of the clams & sausage pasta and loved it. Our waiter was helpful, friendly and gave us great advice about what to order. He really made us feel at home! The only slight negative was the noise level--hard to hear each at times--overall good vibe.

Was very disappointed by our dinner at this restaurant. We came in hoping for a delicious Italian dinner and instead were faced with several glaring problems. Not only was the service abysmal (it took about an hour before our food even came), but the portion sizes (specifically the Sweet Corn Tortellini) were minuscule! We splurged on dessert hoping that it might come out more quickly, but instead were ready to just pay and leave when it came out twenty minutes later.

With a flexible menu of small plate options to share, A10 should have been the perfect place to grab a light dinner before an evening at Court Theater. Unfortunately we were very disappointed - the kitchen failed to live up to expectations. I started with a "Meatball" soup that, based on the server's description, seemed to be their take on Italian Wedding soup. The meatballs were what I would expect from a caterer and the broth was flavorless. Was it chicken? Veal? Dishwater? Who knows? The pasta course was undercooked and underseasoned. Perhaps it was just a bad night, but I couldn't recommend A10 based on our experience.

I have visited A10 several times and have been disappointed or thrilled without any consistency. This time the food was lousy, the service was lousy (didn't bring my friend's drink until reminded twice, brought check and asked if everything was OK and I had to remind the server that I had ordered coffee which hadn't been delivered), and was very inattentive and unorganized. The food was cooked just so so, with the sea scallops done too much (thus chewy) and the veggies soggy, though undercooked. While I usually like to experiment my experiments with their menu this time was a bust.

The food was of high quality--I had shells with clams, sausage and ricotta, which was unusual and very tasty. The server seemed to be new and inexperienced; he was slow but very pleasant. The main problem was the relatively high noise level, making it difficult to have a normal conversation. Shorter tables would help.

We were looking forward to dining here. The menu looked great plus it is a good location before a concert in Hyde Park. But the food and service were disappointing. We liked the elegant, clean décor and the wine list. The Farro with Burrata appetizer was good although it was too large a serving for me. Other dishes however didn't make good use of the ingredients' flavors. The Tuscan Kale "small plate" was overdressed so all you tasted was the "beer mustard." Even the pumpernickel chips were bland. The Campanelle pasta dish was essentially macaroni and cheese w/ olives - very bland except for the olives. Scallops with rapini and the grilled carrots with carmelized yogurt side dish were surprisingly flat. Sorry A10. We had high hopes...
