Diner Reviews
  • "I was very satisfied with the customer service. The low level lightning was truly inviting and the interior decor was pleasing to the eye. I would definitely return so that I can experience the other food dishes."

  • "The wine list was great. Our bottle of Rioja was superb. Food was good, and interesting."

  • "Like Yusho and Billy Sunday very much. A10 not so much. Surroundings very pleasant but entrees too expensive and timing of serving the meal was terrible. We were hoping that A10 would be place for dinner before Court Theatre or Logan Center but waiting almost an hour for our entree put an end to that idea. Manager no help. He told us that "meal was planned to be a two hour experience" . It was whether we wanted it to be or not!"

  • "53rd Street not noted for foodie restaurants It now has one complete with interesting appetizers and unusual presentations of main courses. They had many different starches. First rate ingredients from local sources. Great staff and knock out drinks. Everyone seemed to walk by on 53rd street in the 2 1/2 hours I was there."

  • "I'm glad there's a relatively upscale diner now in Hyde Park. It was desperately needed. Thus, the food selections were not my top favorites. I'd prefer a menu with more poultry and vegetarian selections. Also, I'd tried the Escarole salad, which was very good. I would've liked a variety of larger salad plate selections"

  • "Visited on a Saturday night for a much needed date night. Our first impression was "good." Not as romantic as we'd hoped but we don't get out often. Then we realized that we couldn't decipher one offering on the menu. Even once you get past the foreign language (French and some Italian if I recall correctly), there are no dishes that we could relate to. After convincing my husband to stay anyways (the Air Mails really were worth the hype) we settled on an appetizer made with smoked cod and potatoes and served with toast. It was tasty enough...but overall, for all the fancy description, was not impressive. I would go back for the cocktails and appetizers with girlfriends. But, my husband recommends that you "just don't go.""

  • "Excited about new neighborhood spot, but very disappointed. The service from start to finish was abysmal (not just for us, but in glancing around at others waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting and waiting for drinks, apps, meals and just about anything else). Not the fault of servers it seems, but really poorly organized in the kitchen. A simple meal that should have taken about an hour, stretched out to two hours. These guys have got a shot to make something really special in Hyde Park and I urge them to review their service procedures. As for the food, desserts were fantastic and all else seemed to suffer from kitchen issues (ie food seemed cold or rush prepared in effort to get it out to you)."

  • "Service: Poor Jameel was rude the entire night. He let us know that "he was actually a bar tender and was only acting as a waiter because the restaurant was short staffed". Drinks: Unable to accomodate traditional drink orders. Drink selection was limited to signature cocktails. Appetizers & dinner: Octopus & Brushetta were good. Oxtail & Lobster dishes were probably the best entrees our group had but still just ok. The Gnocchi was not very good at all (the texture was off and not much flavor), and the steak was under seasoned and average at best. The carbonara was also very average due to a lack of seasoning and sauce. Dessert: Overall: Poor service and average food. Although I live in the neighborhood I will not be back."

  • "Once again chef Merges has opened an exceptional restaurant. The food was more than exceptional I especially enjoyed the venison tartar and the quail. Cannot wait to return."

  • "Second visit but first time dining. Despite being quite expensive , the food was not very special, nothing really stood out. Oxtail lasagne was inventive and no Ely presented, but the pasta was not quite cooked enough. Steak arrived as a giant piece of meat with some minimal greens and ,basically ,potato chips.Disappointing. Cocktails are fabulous there, but on a busy Friday the drinks took a long time to come."

  • "This restaurant is fine - certainly the best available in Hyde Park. There are a number of shortcomings though. The wait staff are over-chatty, which is annoying. The wooden chairs are quite uncomfortable. It is often difficult to hear people sitting opposite you. The tables are large, so it also doesn't have a romantic feel. The views onto 53rd street are also unromantic. The food is okay, not great, and is quite expensive."

  • "Hyde Park is not our 'hood - so, when going to a concert at Rockefeller Chapel, we found a "the place" to dine - A10 was fabulously reviewed in Chicago Tribune and w e wanted to try out the Corpse Reviver #2 cocktail - YUM!!! - the food, which changes often, was SO amazing - loads of creative small plates to try and share - and entrees that seemed to be extremely yummy but not enormouse, either. I saw Padron peppers as a garnish listed for an entree. I LOVE Pimiento Padron and eat them by the bowlful when in Spain - so I asked if I could get a side order of them. Absolutely! THANK YOU . Had their Broccoli pizza which was no cheese but a sauce of squash puree and loads of garlic chips. YUM! We'll be back."

  • "I really wanted to walk away feeling ... wow what a great new restaurant we have in Hyde Park... but that wasn't the case....more like...all this anticipation and for what? I really can't pin point the service was friendly and attentive...but the food was not good... we had the quail and steak...the only item that was devine was the potato chips with some sort of orange dressing. The red wine was flavorful and bold but without a meal pairing to measure up....hard to walk away satisfied."

  • "Oustanding food and service......I was surprised.......not because I expected less, but because it was so good......I look forward to going again.......soon"

  • "I read the reviews of this restaurant in the Tribune and decided to try it. The best tasting item was the complmentary cookie after dinner. I had the cod. The smoked oysters were perfect, by themselves would have been a great dish. The beans on the dish were had poor quality control - some were silky textured and lovely and some were crunchy like they had been soaked but not cooked long enough. The dish tasted like 3 or more unrelated items thrown together in one dish. I had the beignet for dessert. The marshmallows were yummy. The beignet needed more chocolate - no distinctive flavor. The dish needed a sauce to hold it together - maybe chocolate to make the chocolate taste more outstanding. Setting is nice."

  • "Been here 3times, twice for dinner and once for brunch. First dinner and the brunch were wonderful. Second dinner was frustrating because the service was so poor and the wait for food and drink was unacceptably long. Servers were friendly but we couldn't figure out who was assigned to us to flag them when we needed to. Will go back again, but the service issues need to be corrected. Not sure if the issue is kitchen pacing or just outright confusion."

  • "Brunch=Fanastic, Lunch =Horrible, This is Hdye Park people have traveled to Italy and New Orleans. They know how the food tastes there. Turkey is a bird of the Americas and people know how it should taste as well. If you want a good turkey sandwich, you can get Boars Head anywhere for less the price and with more quality. I want to support this restaurant because we need it but they have do something about improving the quality."

  • "The title says it all. We had the same experience on an earlier visit as well. The dining room was noisy even without a large crowd or music. Four of us could not hear each other well. It's the room itself that's the problem. $4 for bread???"

  • "The food and wine were amazing, and there was a nice energy and lively feel in the space. But we had to wait way too long for our entrees. It was almost an hour wait between the appetizer and entree. It was delicious but boarding on not worth such a wait!"

  • "This is my third visit and I think it gets even better each time. We were there for Sunday Brunch, and it was great. I had the french toast, others had the skirt steak, lobster crepe and polenta griddle cakes - sides of bacon and sausage links (my fav), and washed it down with an "Airmail" drink - which is my favorite cocktail. Wonderful vibrant atmosphere and great service make A10 a place I will return to over and over."

  • "A10 is still going through some growing pains as far as consistency of service, but they are working hard to improve. Every time I go it gets better. The food and drinks are wonderful if a bit on the small side, portion wise. I'm excited to see what else they have in store for us."

  • "Food is great and staff is energetic, but this restaurant is severely in need of acoustical tiles and more fabric."

  • "We had a terrific meal. Small plates were excellent and to be honest we could have just kept ordering and sharing those! Entrees did not disappoint. House cocktails and wine choices were very good."

  • "awesome place, great addition to hyde park. definitely worth a try, and patronizing it often is a great idea."

  • "Very noisy! Specials not announced until we heard the waiter tell the other table, after we had ordered. Long waits between the time we ordered drinks and received them. Excellent appetizers - garlic soup and oysters- but had to ask for oyster forks. Bread was extra but not written on the menu. We ordered it but cancelled because it didn't come by the time we finish our soup and oysters. Cod and scallop entrees were bland and uninteresting. Wine was $12 to $14 per glass. Dinner, appetizers, main course and one glass of wine eachcost $120 plus tip."

  • "I love a good Sunday brunch. A10 delivered. I enjoyed skirtvstak with poached eggs and anchovy butter and my dining partner enjoyed the most amazing French Toast with poached pears and pepper marshmallow. What a treat!!"

  • "I can only surmise that the recent Trib article brought in unexpected business, because the evening was truly a disappointment. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, and the waiter indicated that he would pace the service so that we could enjoy the meal in 'waves'. In reality, we received three apps immediately, and then 45 long minutes later we received 3 entrees and about 10 minutes later our pasta course arrived! And then, about 30 minutes later we were served two desserts. We might have been ok with the pacing if everything had been delicious, but such was not the case. The burrata was tasteless. Escarole salad ok. Pizza was really focaccia with topping. Double pork chop very nice. Lamb only ok. Roasted veggies blah. Desserts so-so."

  • "Finally, a destination restaurant in an otherwise culinary dessert! Wonderful food, service & vibe. Would definitely go back to this place even if it is a trek from the north side."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "Would have been fine but we had a big group and you could really only hear the person next to you. The restaurant was crowded but I think more than that it's badly designed acoustically."

  • "We were charged for another baguette when we ran out of bread. Maybe I don't run in the right circles, but that has never happened to me before. It was a little off-putting."

  • "Overall the meal was very good. In particular the unique pasta with mustard and the crab raviolis. Both were a great concept very well executed. Salt levels were appropriate and the portion sizes good. We took our two sons (7 & 10) and they did very well - ate their meals and engaged the food head on. I would go back in a heartbeat."

  • "After going to sere a movie in South Shore, we decided to visit Mathias Merges latest restaurant A10 in Hyde Park. We love Yusho, so we had high hopes. The first surprise came when we looked at the menu and saw the prices for entrees. Bread costs $4! Entrees range from $28-$40! I have to confess that I didn't like the brussel sprouts with tongue nor my steak with anchovy butter. I would recomemnd the restaurant to friends, but I wonder who will pay those prices?"

  • "I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this restaurant on OpenTable. Since I live in Hyde Park, the location was perfect. The staff were all welcoming and very accommodating. My friends and I enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant and the drinks were really good as well. The food was prepared ok, but we had a hard time choosing a meal off of the menu. If they tweaked the menu a bit, I'd love to have another meal there. Unfortunately for now, I'd only socialize at the bar."
