A word from A Tavola
Farm to Table, Eclectic Italian
Chef Vittorio Ettore, owner of Bistro 5 has opened a new Restaurant in Winchester. A Tavola, literally translates to “at the table”, an expression used in Italy as a dinner calling to gather everyone around the table to enjoy delicious food, and each other. Born to be the more casual sister restaurant to Bistro 5, A Tavola will be serving an eclectic Italian menu featuring “Piattini”. These small plates will be used to showcase an array of charcuterie, artisan cheeses, fish and vegetables, to pair perfectly with an exclusively Italian wine list. Additionally Chef will be offering unique catering options.

Diner Reviews
  • "This was our first visit (but not our last!) and we were very very happy with everything. The special prix fixe brunch menu was a bit light on vegetarian fare (one of our party is vegetarian) but the carnivores all said the lamb with fingerling potatoes was outstanding. In fact, everything we tried was outstanding. The open kitchen was busy but never hectic and presentation was impeccable. Great place for date night or girl's night out. "

  • "The food was unusual, tasty, and beautifully presented. The table was too narrow: everyone kept stepping on the feet of the person across from them. The waitstaff got one order wrong, and two others were not cooked as clearly ordered. Once corrected, the food was stellar."

  • "This was our second time at A Tavola and we were very impressed both times. The food is inventive and and the flavors are wonderful. The entree portions are substantial. I like the wine list and the "quartino" servings, and when I was trying to decide between two wines, let let me have a taste of each. We will be back."

  • "The food was excellent, a fun choice reflecting the chef's creative touches, not just a standard menu. It's not inexpensive, and not staged for a quick family dinner. Instead, it's an excellent choice for entertaining guests or a night out for two, not only for food, but conversation. Efficient and helpful, but unrushed service. Perfect when one wants a bistro-restaurant, not a loud sports-bar environment. The wine list reflects quality over a wide selection. A nice alternative in a town center, not requiring a trip into the city, or worse, to a suburban strip-mall. We will try their set-menu options on select evenings, since a la carte portions still make it difficult to manage a multi-course dinner from all parts of the menu. "

  • "Hostess & server friendly but not as polished as prices would suggest--had to ask 2xs for wine chiller, had to ask for water to be refilled, no follow-up on quality of dinner & ignored Open Table reference to birthday dinner celebration. Appetizers, especially spicy chickpea dip, were very good. Dinners--pasta was homemade and tasty--were delicious, though portions were on the small side."

  • "Dinner was excellent. Fun wait staff. Good wine. Nice hot pasta!"

  • "Small, intimate location. The food is incredible. Cured meats and pastas are made in house. Will be back."

  • "The Buccatini was very well presented. The pasta was home made, very firm, just on the right side of al dente. The dish itself was possibly a tiny bit salty. The appetizers were the sampler: eggplant. puree, pig roast and grilled squid. Very delicately put together. I am biased in favor of eggplant; this one was very nicely done, with its sweetness just offset by the pig roast. I had to think about what the squid was doing there, although it was excellent on it own. My partner had the Vongole al Forno. It was just right."

  • "This restaurant was exactly what we wanted on a rainy night. The prix fixe was especially fine and the highlight was the wine pairings: 3 outstanding wine choices we would certainly not have found on our own. My choices off the menu were less successful, esp the rabbit and cocoa pasta (bland), but the EVOO cake with basil gelato was wonderful. There were many other interesting choices I saw around me that I would try on another occasion. The atmosphere was pleasant, the presentation very nice, and the overall experience excellent. It is small and a bit too noisy for intimate conversation, but a busy restaurant is always a good sign. We would be happy to return."

  • "We live nearby, and wanted to give something local a shot. I think it's safe to say we have found a place for a nicer evening out, without having to hike a distance! The food was outstanding, and the wine list was impressive. Couldn't afford to visit here often, but certainly wish we could. For the quality and size of the dishes you get, it is very reasonably priced. Try the Bistecca. They know how to do steak right."

  • "We decided it wa time to try A Tavola, and we're glad we did. Delicious pasta, excellent service... A real treat."

  • "The meals were wonderfully prepared. The pasta is consistently al dente with very fresh seafood and garnished well. The entree salmon was flaky with a crisp skin. The entree porchetta got tastier as you work to the center. The EVOO cake dessert was sweeter than I remembered, but balanced well with the basil gelatto. I have always loved the food whenever I go. Thank you for preparing such a great meal."

  • "A taste of rustic Italy in Winchester. This is true Italian food from the countryside. Forget about the Americanized chicken parm and spaghetti and meatballs. At A Tavola, you will eat like the Italians eat - flavorful, healthful and pleasing to the eye. The service here is outstanding and with about 10 tables, the ambience is romantic and cozy."

  • "You'd think a dish on the Restaurant Menu would be memorable enough to lure a new diner back. The bucatini dish was nice but lacked any zing. Disappointing, coming from a chef known for creative "wow" inducing dishes. Also, the beet salad special listed grapefruit as one of its ingredients but it was nowhere to be found. On the other hand, my dining companion's ribollita soup and ribbon pasta with pork (both specials) were excellent. Service was excellent."

  • "A Tavola is a little Italian bistro that's easy to miss. But once found, it will become one of your favorites. The food is very good and features lots of locally grown produce. The appetizers are very small -- if ordering to share, double or triple up."

  • "This is a great place to go for a lively evening. The food was great and the ambiance superb. We easily struck up an interesting conversation with an Italian couple next to us. The only problem was that we had to wait awhile for our table despite advance reservations."

  • "We don't go to Winchester often, but we have gone 3 times now in order to dine at A Tavola. We liked the food, drinks and wine so much Friday evening, the sweetness and knowledge of the wait staff, and the warmth of the ambiance, that on the way home my wife and I began to sing a song we'd all but forgotten from our youth: Winchester Cathedral. I don't know what that means, but we felt young and happy and had a very, very enjoyable time. Especially liked the drink starter of current infused grappa with prosecco. Delish."

  • "Loved the intimacy, the unique selection of items and wine and beer and personal service. I had 2 appetizers and a salad and all were terrific. Definitely aprepeat."

  • "We have eaten at ATavola several times and have always had a great meal. We like sitting at the "chef's table" where you can see the excellent quality of the food and the careful preparation. The antipasto for 2 was wonderful and the rigatoni bolognese is consistently excellent."

  • "I've been looking forward to trying A Tavola for a long time and was very disappointed. I've been to their Sister Restaurant, Bistro 5 many times and didn't like the atmosphere, food or service. I noted an allergy on reservation and never addressed as I had to bring it up. Didn't like having to ask for ground pepper, cheese, etc., No offer of such and had to request table be wiped down prior to ordering dessert. Skip this restaurant and head to their other location - much more atmosphere at Bistro 5 and better food and service."

  • "My husband and I went there to celebrate our anniversary the other night. I have to admit that we were a little skeptical after viewing the reviews, but decided that we would give it a try. We were not disappointed. The food was outstanding; perfectly balanced flavors amongst the freshest ingredients. Not heavy or laden with garlic. Normal portions. My husband asked for a slight adjustment to his meal to which the chef substituted an ingredient to make the dish delectable! Service was just what we love; attentive, available and knowledgable. Very quaint and cozy as one would find in Italy. We tend to dine at Sorrelinas, Davios, and Grill 23 and Mooo, but decided to try local. Our new favorite place!"

  • "Clearly, there is a real chef with a real vision at A Tavola. It wasn't enjoyable merely for the delicious food but for the choices of ingredients, textures, and flavor profiles that informed each dish."

  • "Antipasto for two/risotto with mussels and clams/EVOO cake - all really good. The rabbit pasta dish and the fluke special were also appreciated by my companions. And the wine choices were good value.,"

  • "The food here is wonderful. Every course was unique and delicious. The only drawback is the restaurant is quite small and you end up very close to those sitting next to you. It is sometimes easier to hear the person next to you over the one sitting across the table. Overall the food is definately worth the cramped quarters."

  • "Had reservations; hostess seemed bewildered that there were no open tables and offered bar seats (which we declined). Received wine about 15 minutes after we were seated and then didn't get to order for over 45 min. Dinner not served for another 45 min. All people who came in after us were paying their checks and leaving before we received our entrees! Some food was good, some really prepared badly. My husband, who never once has complained about a restaurant meal actually couldn't eat his. The restaurant did comp him his entree. The waitress had never checked in with us once she served dinner. It was one of those rare nights when everything went wrong! But we wouldn't go there again"

  • "This small and unpretentious restaurant is surprisingly good. The menu is not huge but offers plenty of choices. The rabbit pappardelle was hearty although the cocoa pappardelle tasted like regular pappardelle The scallops were perfectly done. The bread was nicely rustic. The wines suggested by the waitress were excellent."

  • "This was our first time at A Tavola and it won't be the last. The menu was original and interesting without being pretentious, the presentation was beautiful, the service was excellent, the ambiance was lively and the small size of the restaurant gave the experience a feeling of intimacy. To get the most out of the menu, we shared several piattini and appetizers, one main course and a dessert. It was all perfect!"

  • "We tried out this restaurant on a weeknight and it was fairly crowded (good thing we made a reservation!). Not too many tables. It is small and perfectly square-shaped, nice ambiance. The tables aren't very big so any appetizers and drinks need to be strategically placed so nothing falls over. We shared the antipasto plate which was more than ample. We were pleasantly surprised at how many it would serve...that along with oour wine and the bread could have easily been a meal. Service was ok. One waitress was a little unpolished but other than that....would return!"

  • "I love this intimate restaurant in Winchester. It feels like a little neighborhood restaurant in the city. The food is great as is the service. I have eaten here twice. The first time I sat at the small bar that overlooks the kitchen - and that was great fun as we could interact with the chef. Most recently we sat at a table near the window. I had the salmon which was cooked perfectly and had a delicious winter vegetable hash with it. Also love that their glasses of wine are served in a small carafe and are actually a glass and a half, which is often what I want with dinner. I definitely recommend it."

  • "We are big fans of both A Tavola and Bistro 5. The food is always delicious and without pretense. The atmosphere is comfortable and if you can, sit at the little bar by the kitchen so you can see the magic happen. I am a first generation Italian, so i know my way around real Italian food and these guys make me feel nostalgic for my nonna but also satisfy my foodie tastes."

  • "As always, this was a great visit. It was a very quiet night, and the special was lobster!! My husband & I both ordered the special and we were not disappointed. The amount was just right, and the taste was tender & sweet. Our waitress was very friendly, but lacked an umph! Minor annoyance: We ordered a bottle of red wine. Waitress came back a few minutes later carrying 2 different bottles of wine because they ran out of the bottle we wanted. She said the 2 bottles she brought out were similar to our choice. She described each and we agreed to one of them. When the bill came, we were surprised that the bottle of wine was $20 more than our original choice. Perhaps our waitress should've also told us the price of the 2 substitutes....."
