  • "Best steaks I've ever eaten, the wife and I look forward to going every year for our anniversary. For sure 2 thumbs up."

  • "801 is one of the restaurants we dine at for special occasions. The food is amazing, and although we've always had excellent service, I will say our waiter this trip wasn't up to par like we're use to. It won't hinder us from returning, but definitely hope we get a 'good one' like we know 801 has."

  • "Wonderful food, service, and atmosphere. Definitely recommend!"

  • "Outstanding experience! The service was excellent. The food and wine was wonderful."

  • "The shrimp appetizer is delicious, would come again just for this dish."

  • "I was looking forward to having a great steak in Des Moines and 801 Chophouse delivered. The martinis are fantastic, wine list superb and you just can't go wrong with any steak on the menu. I started with the shrimp cocktail which were large and tasty. I ordered the 12oz. NY strip and it was cooked perfectly between MR and Med. I had heard great things about the green beans but they were just okay. I'd go with another side next time. Can't wait to return!"

  • "My wife & I have gone to 801 Grand on special occassions.......always have a great time and staff is very personable(although the bartender this time was kind of a "stiff" but I don't count him as a normal occurance. Food was great as was our server, Jimmy D, who I have known for a number of years prior to our visits at 801 Grand. This was my wife's birthday and they gave her a special "Happy Birthday" menu as well as a "no charge" dessert and a little glitter on the table which was very sweet! We will be headed back in July for our wedding anniversary."

  • "My girlfriend & I had reservations for 7 on a Friday night, but don't think we would have needed them as there seemed to be a few open tables. We got seated right away, drinks ordered, & were informed about specials & the house favorites. Ordered our meals & snacked on the complimentary fresh-baked sourdough. We had the 12oz NY strip, 8oz filet mignon, side of garlic mashed potatoes & side of fried zucchini. The waitress made it clear that the sides come in portion sizes meant to share, so that was good to know. All the food was excellent, I honestly can't think of anything that could have been better. It is just a once in a long while type of place for us though. Our dinner mentioned above with 2 glasses of wine came to ~$140."

  • "When money is no object, this is a great restaurant. Set in the tallest building in Des Moines, right downtown, the Chophouse is welcoming with attentive staff. The food is excellent, plentiful, and all served a la carte. The food was presented well, the waiter was efficient, helpful, and friendly. We had not been there before so he mad suggestions as to selection, sizes, etc. We appreciated his telling us that sides were served family style and were available in 1/2 sizes. We would have been much too full otherwise. The Chophouse is not cheap, but one knows that in advance. For two of us, each with one entree — prime rib and NY Strip, sides, a shared desert, and one coffee, the bill with 20% tip, came to $200.00. A Groupon coupon helped."

  • "Groupon had a deal that was perfect timing for my 20th wedding anniversary. Took the wife to dinner here - the food was outstanding, service was terrific. Since this was a special occasion figured it was worth going to a place we would never go normally."

  • "My wife and I chose this restaurant on the fly during an overnight in Des Moines, and I have to say it far exceeded expectations. First, the overall appearance of the place is right in line with my favorite -- dark woods, tasteful lighting and white table linens. Secondly, the food is--for a change--well worth the prices, and the service was attentive without being overbearing or pretentious. A very positive experience, and a hearty recommendation of this place to anyone visiting the area and wanting a memorable meal. Well done, folks."

  • "It was a bit loud inside, we couldn't really hear each other and barely heard the servers."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "The food at 801 Chophouse was fantastic! Easily worth every penny! Waiter was excellent and very knowledgable about the steaks and answered any and all questions we had. Had a great time! Plan to return, almost revoked a star because of the noise, we were seated in the only booth next to the kitchen. Needless to say it was kind of loud for my Girlfriend and I to talk. If you are looking for a great place to take you're significant other or to impress a date, 801 would be a great pick"

  • "Best food I've ever had. The service was second to none. Vast knowledge of the food to be served."

  • "With this being a Birthday present to my boyfriend and also our first time there for both of us this was one of the best experiences for a nice out to dinner. Our waiter was very kind and informative on the menu and drinks."

  • "Ask for Kyle to be your server. Exceptional food and wine knowledge."

  • "Best dining experience we've ever had. Our server, Paul, was professional and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. The food was outstanding and it was an overall fabulous experience!"

  • "A great spot to celebrate with someone special. The salad, steaks, lobster mac and cheese, and souffle were divine. The evening was not just a great meal, but a true experience in fine dinning."

  • "Steak had a lot of fat in it. Waitress dropped her writing pad on my mom and about spilled drinks"
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "Had the best prime rib I can remember. Prime Rib (single cut) was right thickness, very tasty, and tender. The price was right. Staff was attentive and friendly. Good beef-type restaurant atmosphere. Also ate at the KC 801 Chophouse and wished there were more throughout North America."
    Dined on 6/9/2014
  • "Nice relaxing atmosphere with professional service. Thorough wine list. Eveything you expect from a steakhouse experience, including not least of all excellent and perfectly cooked steaks."
    Dined on 6/8/2014
  • "never had a bad meal here. always excellent food service and ambience."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "Service was great and no one does steak like them. I almost got fish because they had a great selection of that on the menu also."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "The steaks were very good and tender. Cooked just as we ordered them. Side dishes were great too. We ordered the cheesy cauliflower and hashbrowns. Soufflé for dessert was amazing with 3 kinds for sauce to poor over the dessert!"
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "This is comfort food taken to the next level. There are always specials that sound unique and interesting. We happen to split a large steak and two sides and really are left with no room... yet we always order desert! Order desert early for minimal waiting time!"
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "The chophouse is a place for great food, great wine and amazing service. I've been there several times - never a bad experience - and, imo, best place for a steak in Des Moines."
    Dined on 6/4/2014
  • "Prime beef steak you can cut with a fork. Superior homemade hashbrowns. If you don't order hash brown with steak; go order quiche. The live lobster stuffed, the lobster mac and cheese and lobster corn dogs were to the delight of my 13yo b day lobster extravaganza. Thankfully, they didn't sing happy birthday but they did offer up a very nice cheesecake slice to our celebrant. I can't think of a better restaurant this side of Chicago"

  • "801 Chophouse delivered on our evening out. Wonderful service and great dining. Probably too high end for regular visits, but perfect for special occasions or to impress company. We will definitely choose 801 Chophouse our next special celebration."

  • "While the food was good (it should be at these prices) our overall experience was very disappointing. We took our grown kids and their significant others to celebrate an event. We were placed in an area next to a large noisy group (+12 people). Not only could we not hear anything the waiter had to say about the menu, we couldn't hear each other across the large table. The waiter either had a cold or didn't really care, but he made no attempt to talk so we could hear, even after we asked, and just rolled his eyes when the noise got exceptionally loud. He did not offer to relocate us. Our bill was over $700...no food is so good to pay that kind of money for that kind of disappointing experience. Won't be back"

  • "I wonder if there is a better place for beef in the United States. I sort of doubt it. Hash browns are to die for. The soufflé (both Grand Marnier and Chocolate) complete a wonderful meal like nothing else could. My favorite restaurant bar none. I will be back over and over!"

  • "A memorable experience. The oysters rival Splash. The martini is big and cold, with Bombay the house gin. The salad is creative, and big enough to split. The steak is better than anything you can buy at the grocery store, well-rubbed and cooked on a very hot grill, resulting in a juicy dream of a meal. I like the seafood pan the best. It is an enormous feast of perfectly cooked crab, lobster, giant scallops, shrimp, and mussels in a garlic/butter/wine sauce. And the vegetables! We've tried the brussels sprouts, the cauliflower, the mushrooms sautéed with boursin cheese. Rich and tangy sauces, but not overcooked. The servers are what I would call characters, in a good way."

  • "We eat at 801 Grand 2 to 3 times a year on anniversaries, birthdays, and New Years Eve. The service and food are always great. Our least favorite place to sit is in the dining room with no windows, as the noise level rises during the evening, and the room is claustrophobic. When I book in advance through Open Table, I expect to receive a prime table the windowless room is not prime seating."

  • "801 is definitely spendy but my husband and I had a really special 5-year anniversary celebration. I had a couple glasses of a great wine, husband had two cocktails with house-soaked bourbon cherries. Husband's bone-in filet was declared the best steak he'd ever had. My regular filet was fabulous as well. Sides were delicious but the steaks were the star. The service was excellent with good recommendations. We didn't have room for dessert but our server through in a slice of complimentary cheesecake that we enjoyed later. We can't afford to go often but for memorable special occasions, you won't find much better."

  • "Service was outstanding, food average. Porterhouse steak was done just as requested, medium but meat was a bit tough. Crab stuffed lobster which was just okay, since it was broiled was tough which is to be expected. Cauliflower was excellent, Maytag blue cheese potatoes were not our favorite, blue Cheese was overpowering. 801 Chop salad just mediocre. The wait staff presented us with a surprise dessert in honor of our anniversary, a double mousse with fruit and nuts which was outstanding. Overall, good experience, outstanding service but not sure the food was worth the price. I'll give 801 another chance and try a different steak next time. The ones coming off the grill as we left looked really good, better than the porterhouse."

  • "The food was amazing, service was amazing! My boyfriend and I were celebrating a special occasion and it was perfectly romantic without being cheesy! Will defiantly return!"

  • "My husband said it best. He said, "I'd like to come back tomorrow to order all the great things on the menu that I couldn't order tonight." Great restaurant with fabulous wine list as well as menu. They know what they are doing and do it very well."

  • "801 was recommended as THE place to come for steaks in Des Moines and it did not disappoint.our waitress Jonnie was wonderful, she was friendly and knowledgable and made our experience exceptional. The steaks were outstanding as we're the side dishes. I would recommend this place to anyone but be ready to pay, it's pricey but worth it."
