Diner Reviews
  • "we went expecting 1 of 2 menus - patio a la carte w/hot dogs, pulled bbq, etc. OR summer tomato 3 course menu. Neither was given as an option to us. In fact, the tomato celebration menu said it was only until 6:45 pm, but it doesn't say this online (@least not obviously). We were there from 7:30 pm thru 8:50 pm. I would've ordered a hot dog if I could've--I did end up seeing a hot dog going by to another table (too bad for me). Or I would've tried the tomato dinner. The free range chicken tasted good - could've used more vegetables. Getting our check was slow, esp. because we were trying to walk down to the Mall to catch the fireworks by 9:10. We made it right on time, but probably waited about 25 minutes to finalize everything."

  • "My husband and I dined at 701 for our wedding anniversary where we were warmly greeted and seated by Chris, the beverage director. Because we were having the three-course tomato celebration menu, Chris continued to discuss the menu along with beverage pairing options including a non-alcoholic pairing for $20. It's quite possible that I was offered this pairing because I was 34 weeks pregnant, but I did get it nonetheless and it was just delicious! The three beverages consisted of light, refreshing, summery blends. My favorite was the dessert pairing of lemon Pellegrino and 701's homemade pomegranate juice-it really hit the spot. Of course, the overall meal was delicious and the service was on point-I strongly recommend 701."

  • "We went to try their summer time tasting menu where the tomato is the featured item! For $35 a person it was well worth the food!"

  • "The food is good but - for the price - a few of our dishes had surprising issues for a restaurant of this caliber. Crispy oyster app was really good, however, the slaw was overdressed. Minor problem but it muddled the delicate flavor of the perfectly prepared oysters. Beet salad was good, a little one note, and could use an additional element besides beet and horseradish. The Free Range Chicken dish is one of the best plates of chicken I've ever eaten: chicken with smoked mushrooms and cheddar gnocchi .... wow. Great location and vibe with excellent service."

  • "If you like a gourmet experience with great ambiance and the old New York Sardis feel then 701 should be on your list of dining. The decor combined with the piano bar and the tentative service was outstanding. Great for special events, a nite out with friends, pre-theater, business or a nightcap - this restaurant Is perfect."

  • "I have been to 701 on many occasions & enjoy the pre theater menu. This time the food was very disappointing. My friend and I normally love everything, but this time the beet salad was skimpy and the salad which had beef in it had an odor. Her salmon(one of the main reasons we choose 701) was ok at best and the flank steak seemed tough and overdone (I have had this on numerous occasions and typically love it!). The desserts were excellent as usual. I am not sure what happened on this night (June 26) but the kitchen could not have been busy since we put our orders in at 5:30. I chalk it up to a bad day and plan to give it another try, but one more night like this and it is off the list! Based on this experience, I would not recommend."

  • "Our recent evening at 701 was one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I've had in years. I'll admit that I haven't gone to this restaurant often in the past because the attitude of the staff was not welcoming. The food has always been good. However, my most recent experience demonstrated a wonderful new attitude on the staff's part. Everyone was pleasant and positive. They all worked with us to be sure that we had the best possible experience. The food was even better than it has been in the past. I had the special squash blossom appetizer, which I strongly recommend if it's available. I followed with the haddock and my companion had the short ribs. The dishes were well conceived, well presented, and delicious."

  • "Efficient service. Additionally, the bar lunch is a good deal."

  • "We sat outside, since the tables were near a square filled with interesting people and away from traffic. The waiter was attentive and was able to describe how menu items were prepared. The food was among the best 3 or 4 restaurants in the DC area."

  • "We have been going to 701 since they opened decades ago. The food was very good, as we expect from this restaurant group and at this price point. But the service was terrible. We sat outside and after a long delay our order was taken. We reminded the waiter that we had a show at 8. The drinks and first course were slow but finally came. And then a long wait for the main courses. The waiter never came back, although he served other people on the patio. Another server passed by, said the food was coming, but it did not appear. Finally, we got the food but had to eat quickly to make our show. The manager came over and apologized, but was unclear whether it was the kitchen or the waiter or a bit of both. She comped us for the valet."

  • "We went here because we needed a last minute reservation for eight and it was late Friday night - the fact they could easily accommodate us was a clue that the place is dramatically overpriced and the service was lukewarm. The overall vibe is staid trying for elegance although the live music was pleasant."

  • "The food was inventive, very nicely presented - excellent. The location is convient to the Shakespeare Theatre, Portrait Gallery, Spy museum, Fords, many other DC points of interest/attractions. 701 has been added to my list of Penn Quarter restaurants I'll return to. Congrats 701! I'll be back!"

  • "I dined here with a group of eight on a Wednesday evening and had a great experience. The service staff was welcoming and attentive yet not intrusive while the menu was seasonally focused and refined yet not pretentious. Our server put together a special menu specifically for us and the sommelier and bar manager provided excellent wine and beverage pairings. We left content and satiated. I would definitely return again!"

  • "The food and ambiance were notable, however the service was slow and the waiter was impersonal and abrasive."

  • "My team stated that really enjoyed themselves. 701 open up the private room for my team for a 4 hour meeting 1 1/2 hour prior to opening. Pleasant hospitality at 701"

  • "Great restaurant for pre-theater. We were attending the Lansburgh Theater and had reservations for 6PM - this allowed plenty of time for drinks and dinner. Besides the regular menu, they served a 3 course pre-theater dinner which was superb. Weather was wonderful and we had a table for two outside. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "701 is a favorite for us, but this is the second time this season that I've been disappointed. The soups continue to be amazing and the potato leek was great. The main dishes though continue to baffle me - last time I had a bad experience with fish, so this time I steered toward the pasta. The cavatelli pasta consistency was perfect, but the lamb ragout sauce was heavy and so salty. Service as always is impeccable, the wine list good, great jazz musician playing, but on a Friday night the restaurant was nearly empty - too bad because this is a great restaurant."

  • "We've lived less then a block from 701 for 3 months, just now visited. We sat outside just around dusk, with candle light, quiet with the sound of the fountain from the navy memorial. The staff was great, food was really good, we will definitely be back."

  • "We came before a play at the nearby Lansburgh Theater. Reminded them we were going to the theater. Dinner was well paced. And delicious. While the Pre-theater dinner choices were limited to 3 first courses, 3 entrees, & 3 desserts, my salad was tasty, the salmon delicate, and dessert excellent. My friend ordered the steak which I always hesitate to order because I like medium rare & worry about overcooking or being tough or too chewy, etc, but my friend said it was tender."

  • "The pre-theater dinner is an excellent value and the added benefit of valet parking extending through the theater is a BIG plus!"

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a pre-theater meal. The options for the pre-theater meal were excellent, but I only wanted a light meal and found the choices to be disappointing: the only soup had cream in it and crab salad was very rich. The service and setting lovely - but the best seating is outside"

  • "My wife and I get to D.C. 3 or 4 times a year. I can assure you that the 701 is always on our dance card. This trip we were down to see Henry IV and had tickets for Sun. evening. So we opted for the 5:00 p.m. pre-theatre meal. Wonderful. I had halibut which was one of the best ever. The three other members of our party had all different dishes and all found them excellent. A quality dining room, white table clothes, table spaced well and a knowlegdeable and efficient staff. Only down side, the wine list could be more pocketbook friendly. "

  • "Excellent food. My colleague had the salmon which she loved. I had the hangar steak, equally superb. I had the $25 lunch deal, which is a great price for food of this quality. Service was very attentive."

  • "We went to this restaurant for a special occasion. The atmosphere of the restaurant is relaxed with the playing piano next to the bar. The decor was ok, modern, and the scenic view of the neighborhood was nice. But the food is pricy but it is not good. Duck Croquettes were I think without duck and very salty, New Bedford Diver Scallops were good but Crispy Prosciutto added to the two pieces of scallops was so dry that nobody could chew it. Roasted Duck Breast was left on the plate. And the Thai Snapper which several guests ordered was ok but it didn't remind anything about Thai. Don't go to this place to eat. Romantic night with drink and music is ok but food NO. Regarding the service, unpleasant, and you never can find them."

  • "the steak is raw, regardless of how you order it. if you send it back for further cooking, they char the rim quickly, but it will still be raw. on late saturdays its very busy, but, remarkably, still not exceedingly loud. however, the staff do not know how to handle a busy day. you'd have thought they want to pick up your check (or at least give you one) without forcing you to hold up your hand for ten minutes, but, sadly, that's not the case. this place is not good for teenagers, with or without adults present. last time i checked, being treated like a five year old would irritate anyone. the restaurant is quite pretty though, good lighting (although it darkens suddenly when it becomes nine-o-clock). "

  • "Enjoyed the outdoor seating right next to the Navy Memorial on a gorgeous spring day. Food was good, but the service was somewhat inattentive when we had already mentioned that we had an evening performance to catch, and also there was a group of very loud diners right next to us. Still would consider returning for pre-theatre dining again."

  • " The price of the pretheater menu is reasonable, and the choices are so inventive. I would never guess that the beet salad would come out in cubes of at least 4 different flavors, all topped with an herb called "mustard streak" [?], which a hostess found out for me. The steak was done exactly to my order. Really, the food is excellent, and it's right near Shakespeare Theater. I have no complaints!"

  • "Really there are only two reasons. I went here for Mothers Day brunch and was very disappointed. The prix fixe menu looked great; however, the food was terrible. The first course we ordered beef carpaccio and crab. The carpaccio tasted old and had an old smell and the crab was entirely under seasoned. We then ordered the spaghetti and salmon which was better, but still not great. Finally, for dessert we ordered the beignets, and other assorted desserts. They were all dry and unimpressive. On top of this, the service was mediocre at best where our server forgot simple requests. Though the live jazz was nice, it did not make up for everything else. For how great this restaurant can be, I was shocked to see the lack of care given."

  • "701 had a great 3 course Mother's Day brunch menu. The Jazz was a nice touch for this event. Our server was excellent and very attentive. I would recommend this restaurant to others. The Bellini's and Cosmos were great. "
