Diner Reviews
  • "I took my parents and cousin here for a celebratory dinner. The food was amazing and could not have asked for better service. Great value for the price."

  • "This is one of the best steakhouses I have been to. The Lobster Tempura was spectacular…it practically melted in your mouth. My Filet Mignon was mouthwatering and the drinks were on point. The only downside is that the floors are kind of slippery so you have to be careful. My friend took a little fall on our way to the restroom. Next time I'm in San Francisco I'd definitely go back."

  • "We had a great experience at 5A5. The food was impeccable and the service always is as well."

  • "I've been hearing for months about this being best place to get a streak in the city. It was good but didn't meet the high expectations we had."

  • "First class from valet to finishing small bite sample from chef. We started off with a few cocktails and wine while waiting for one of our guest to arrive. Once seated into the dining area we were quickly greeted by our waiter. Since this was our first experience here, he presented us with a quick review the selected beef and a complete review of the menu. We selected the Tuna Tataki of tandoori spice, watermelon, herb puree, candied bacon since the watermelon with tuna combination intrigued us. It was a refreshing bite of wonderful. Main courses were filet mignon, boneless ribeye steak with sides of potatos au gratin & brussell sprouts. Steaks were perfectly rested before presentation to us and the sides were piping hot."

  • "Nice spin on the "traditional" steakhouse. More club/lounge feel to it, but without an annoying DJ spinning in the background. Very comfortable seating and service was pretty on point, but not 5 stars worthy imo. Nice range of steak, but a little shocked that you only have Wagyu or A5 choices then a complete step-down to "Choice" steaks. 5A5 you should have some "Prime" in there especially if you are going to offer dry aged on the menu. A standout here were the side dishes. Brussel sprouts, mac n cheese, truffle fries, and oh yes the hamachi small bite all went fast. Would recommend to anyone who wants a good steak dinner, but not necessarily the same old scene."

  • "We went there on a Sunday night quite early. When we entered the restaurant just 1/3 of the tables were taken, so the restaurant was not busy (yet). Nevertheless, we've been completely ignored for the first 10 minutes. Our main waiter was friendly but completely impersonal. He didn't even try to have a small talk with us, just took our order and left quickly. The food was good, the truffle fries were amazing but overall the place does not have a good vibe. It's quite soul-less, and lacks on personality that could distinguish it from other places. Being in San Francisco the fact that the food was good is not enough to stand out. There are many other places with great food in the city."

  • "This is a real find; wonderful food and I don't even eat steak...the chicken was fabulous and my date said his steak was equally wonderful. The mashed potatoes were outstanding and the service attentive and the waiter was very informed."

  • "I had lunch here on March 14th. I had been wanting to eat here, but they just recently opened for lunch. Our food was very good, but small portions. Also, I felt the menu was very limited."

  • "First time visiting 5A5, and it was quite good. I had the 24oz bone in ribeye, and my wife went with the 4oz strip. Both were cooked perfectly, and both were tasty. Sides we went with string beans and brussel sprouts, again, both good. The gem on the menu that we didn't touch was the Kobe beef at $35-40 an ounce. I hope to be back at some point to try it, and they did have a sampler of all 4 varieties at $525 for 16 ounces of meat. Worth it? Unknown yet. Only negative I would say would be the overall time it took to get our meal out. It took in excess of 40 minutes for our meal (which they did warn us before hand though) Definitely recommended for a special occasion or meat quenching visit."

  • "Got here last minute as I was craving for a good steak! Even better than I could imagine and I had the boneless ribeye. Next time, I will surely splurge for their specialty Wagyu beef :) My Co-worker was amazed at the entire experience. The entire wait staff was wonderful and accommodating. Thank you 5A5!!"

  • "The food and service was great! However, noise level was louder than expected and parking was hard to find. I would definitely go back to try other dishes, especially some of the appetizers."

  • "My husband and I went for our 2nd anniversary and really enjoyed ourselves. The food was great, definitely worth the price, the beverages from the bar were perfect, not watered down like in some establishments. We really enjoyed the gentleman on the piano while we ate, it really added to the atmosphere. My husband is slightly worried that this restaurant may have ruined bacon for him. It was by far the best tasting bacon we'd ever had. Thank you 5A5 for a great anniversary date!"

  • "fun place, looks like a scene outta the jetsons, not typical steak-looking place. food ok, not the best cuts of meat, unless you order their wagyu beef. don't understand some of their trimmings, like the pico de gallo on top of our steak. it did not belong there. food, otherwise, ok. not the greatest, just 'ok'. their cocktails, on the other hand, are excellent. the bar/lounge is nice."

  • "Reserved for 6:00 pm but arrived at 5:25 pm. I assumed we would be waiting for at least a half hour--Nope, sat us right away! I won't bore you with a long review so, here's the bottom line... Truffle fries are a must. The Bone-in NY is the way to go. And... for a romantic dinner experience, 6-7pm was perfect."

  • "I am not a huge beef eater. I eat a steak perhaps twice a year. This experience may have swayed that habit. We began with a delicious shrimp appetizer then sampled an American filet mignon, which was quite delicious. However, when our wagyu beef A5 "experience" arrived, I never imagined the gift I was about to present to my tastebuds. Unbelievable. There was absolutely no comparison to the regular steak. Pricey and certainly best kept for special occasions, but do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this menu. Coupled with impeccable service and a comfortable atmosphere, you'll have an unforgettable experience."

  • "Very good execution. The hamachi shooter was delicious as was the Tataki Tuna and lobster tempura first course. My steak was tasty although slightly cooked beyond medium rare and a bit over sauced. I recommend if you get any steak, have them put the sauce on the side and get it done one less temp than they recommend, for medium rare, order rare. Service was friendly and attentive. The wine list is manageable and has many interesting choices. They have a sommelier so take advantage of his knowledge of the wine list. The check is not for the faint of heart. Taking full advantage of the dining experience here will set you back $200/person+ with tax, tip, license and doc fee. All in all a really nice dining experience."

  • "After my favorite restaurant Alexander's got rid of their chef, I haven't been back. I have been looking for a new place ever since. I came across 585 and was amazed!! The jasmine chicken was the BEST chicken I have had! I don't eat pork or beef, so finding a place that can make chicken interesting is difficult. Most places just don't focus on other meat options outside of beef or pork. But 585 has mastered chicken! The chicken was moist and the flavor was so delicious! I also loved their Lobster Tempura. Yum! Their truffle fries were the only thing I wasn't impressed with. The flavor was bland and the dipping sauce just tasted like mayo. I also wish they had more vegetable sides that didn't include bacon."

  • "We live in the bay area and often find we go back to our favorites in downtown SF before trying something new. Wow were we glad we branched out a bit and tried 5A5. Everything was perfect, from the split glass of white wine in the bar to start, to even more excellent service as we were explained the menu down to the last detail enabling us to order the perfect amount and type of food. The mac and cheese with lobster was awesome, as was the incredible meat. We have a 6 oz count to share which was perfect for us. All 5 of our senses left happy (the "5" in 5 A5), and while we did not try the A5 qualify beef (a tad pricey for our wallet), we loved what we did get. Bill"

  • "Literally the best steak I have had in my life. Great service and amazing wine pairings. Would recommend as a place to impress and plan to spend a few hours here. Suggest business casual attire."

  • "Off all the wonderful offerings (truffle fries, check - hamachi bites, check - ribeye, check!) it was the lobster tempura that put it over the top for our entire table. We enjoyed the heck outta our evening at 5A5, which is billed as an 'Asian steakhouse' but doesn't distract with an overbearingly ethnic agenda. Food was better than cocktails but I'd go back for both."

  • "Beef sashimi was excellent. LOVED the NY Bone In steak with the bacon jam and egg! We had brussel sprouts and shrooms as sides, and while they were good, we weren't wowed by either of them."

  • "I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!! Their food is top notch. I had their rib eye and mashed potatoes with curry gravy...had so much flavor..incredible!! Dont fill up on the bread...I learned from that mistake...overall...perfect spot."

  • "When I first walked in the place looked so nice, very moderen. The server we had was AMAZING, everything she did was on point. She was so kind, sweet, and very helpful. She knew what she was talking about, I have to say one of th best servers I've ever had. The food was outstanding!!!! The T-bone steak was just on point! By far the best steak I've ever ate!"

  • "Wow - this was nothing that I expected. Everything was perfection from the moment I dropped my car with the valet, who was so helpful and remembered that I would be back with some packages prior to my reservation and he ran up to me and offered to carry them and put them away for me. The Maitre' d was charming, kind, and very attentive having our coats ready for us when we went to leave. The space is gorgeous in a modern and retro way. Young cool and hip but not in an irritating way (if you are not that young). The food innovative and delicious with a wide range of offerings - including the specialty drinks which are worth a try even though they sound a little strange. We skipped dessert but we couldn't have eaten another bite anyway."

  • "Carnivore cravings quenched by multiple Wagyu offerings. Certainly the attraction of this place, and on that front, 5A5 delivers an A5. Service and seating a notch off the highest echelon. Some accompaniments forgotten and occasional plates were delivered without any comment except, "plates are really hot." Also, arrived at early seating but placed in awkward dark back corner, which was soon filled with an 8 top of loud and profane male diners (bachelor party?). Really dampened the atmosphere."

  • "You can never go wrong dining at 5A5 for dinner. This was our first lunch there, and it was just as awesome. If you haven't gone here yet, you should!"
    Dined on 2/20/2014
  • "Very tasty and creative dishes including the scallops and tempura lobster. Our server tried the hard sell on the wagyu beef, but took up a bunch of our time with an annoying sales pitch. I suggest they simply bring out bites to taste instead of uncooked slabs of fatty beef."

  • "Without a doubt, some of the best food around. I went for Valentines day and that may have been apart of the problem but $350 is a bit much for 2 people. That's including a modest %15 tip which i hate to do but the bill was killer. Wine? We each had a glass for $18 per glass and that was second to the worst Red on menu. The only menu option was the $110 per person 4 course meal which I'm sure was a contributor but I probably won't eat 5A5 again because, in all honesty, food just as good is much cheaper else where and so are the drinks. 2 lemon drops for $28 felt gouging. Other than that, If money is not a consideration, Great place to eat for a Romantic time out!"

  • "the rib eye was huge. the sides were better though. I would recommend the truffle fries, the shrooms, as well as the green beans. service was great. I would definitely recommend taking a date here because the staff was so professional. Kudos to the service!"

  • "Third visit and still great. Must enjoy meat! Cooked perfect each time. Just saying, their Prime Rib was better then "House of Prime Ribs". And the prime ribs are very good there. Do the math. Definitely going back soon."

  • "We had a great time at this modern take on a steak house. It had a great feel with even better food. We enjoyed all our courses and the service was efficient without being intrusive. We will be back and I would recommend this place to anyone visiting the city."

  • "We were celebrating a friend completing her schooling. We were a little early, but got seated immediately. After we ordered, they bought us a sausage & duck dish to whet our appetites (compliments of the chef). To start we ordered some oysters, which were delicious and presented wonderfully. For entrees we had the rib eye and the lamb chops with shards & mushrooms as our sides. Everything was mouth-watering good - all of it was cooked to perfection. For dessert, we shared an tobacco ice cream which sounds strange but was indescribably delicious - you have to try it!. They knew were celebrating an occasion and gave my friend a congratulatory (free) Beignets. It was a nice touch. Service was outstanding and attentive. we'll be back!"

  • "Several reasons to eat here. 1). The environment is fun and energetic. It's likes 60's lounge meets 2014. Vibrant lights, crocodile texture lounge chairs and a modern rotunda with pastel lighting. 2). The food was crazy good. I had the 10 oz prime rib and it melted in my mouth. My partner had the flier and he loved it. Our sides, were the mac and cheese and chard. IT WAS FLIPPING GREAT!!!! Oh by the way....Bacon bread. Ever had it? I didn't until our dinner. Wow is all I have to say. 3). Service was great. We were celebrating a Birthday and our waitress was great. She went over the menu, made great recommendations and had a "Happy Birthday" plate sent over at the end of our dinner. A great experience and will return!"
