A word from 23Hoyt
The restaurant scene in Portland is among the most vibrant and interesting in the country. In 2006 Executive Chef Chris Carriker was promoted into a rigorous sous chef gig under Executive Chef Christopher Israel – at 23Hoyt, just as we opened. More recently he earned high regard and notoriety while Executive Chef at the Gilt Club. 23Hoyt's crave-able menu (with the best burger in town) still fits within the realm of "gastro-pub" with familiar offerings that exceed expectations on your first bite.
The comfortable cafe, bar and dining room features several seating areas including extensive outdoor cafe tables on bustling NW 23rd Avenue, in Nob Hill, the best boutique shopping neighborhood in the city.

  • "Gourmet Cuisine in a very relaxing and friendly atmosphere under fabulous service. The bar is also outstanding. It is definitely one of the best dinner experience you may have in Portland."

  • "In this age more people want food to take into account dietary issues. 23Hoyt has several good GF options!"

  • "Now this is a resturant that my wife and I both enjoyed. The decor is fantastic and the natural wood displayed throughout the establishment is swell. The food choices were unique and the server was knowledgable about all items on the menu and area encompassing the location! Whenever we return to Portland, this will be our first stop... Again."

  • "While my table mate was satisfied with her entree on the Portland monthly deal, the appetizer and salad were nothing to write home about. My ceasar salad was tolerable but not worth $10, the goat, one of their specialties was expensive, tough for about half the meat. Service while attentive, delivered the appetizer and my salad before our drinks arrived. it might be trendy but not among the better restaurants in this town of excellent local spots."

  • "Trying to add taste to food with chili flakes, i. e. making it taste hot, is not creative. It's a false and unpalatable substitute. The addition of chili flakes to the salad destroyed an otherwise average salad and rendered it inedible. Why on earth ruin a good thing with unnecessary hot stuff. As for appetizer of beans on toast touted as bruschetta, I have had as good at Taco Bell from its 99 cent menu. Finally, although the rigatoni was good, it was nothing special. The duck and desert were good and rate only a "B", because they are overpriced for what they are. Given the prices, there are other restaurants that are far better in PDX."

  • "23 Hoyt is not as good as any of the other restaurants on 23rd Street. Food and Service is merdiocre."

  • "I am allergic to so many things, dining out is something I'm rarely brave enough to do. Our server was totally cool, did not flinch in the slightest when I told him I needed serious modifications to the dishes on the menu. He was discreet, and said the chef would put something together for me, which he did. The dish was perfectly tailored to what I can eat and incredibly delicious. It was truly refreshing to not be made to feel like a freak and to have a restaurant accommodate a special diet without any problems."

  • "The food was great! The service was very friendly. Loved the atmosphere. We were in Portland on business. We found the restaurant through open table. We were not disappointed. I will return on a future visit to Portland!"

  • "In the past, family enjoyed this place. This time it was loud, uncomfortable, marginal service and average food. Difficult to even get timely drinks or silverware for one in group. Reservation highlighted that it was an important birthday celebration.....no acknowledgment by staff. Terrible!"

  • "Online munu looked awesome. Elk tartare, hamachi crudo, etc. Neither of those items were actually on the menu when we got there, but we went for the regular steak tartare, steelhead crudo, and a few other things that were not memorable. I love tartare and pretty much anything raw, but it didn't look or taste good. The cuts of the steelhead were thick, bland, and chewy. It would have been better with a much thinner cut and some acid or flavor. The service was very slow. Took 15 minutes to get our first drink. The waitress did not ask any questions or check on us between courses. The ambience is awesome though. Indoor trees, high ceilings, nice decor. Too bad they don't focus more on the food and service. I won't go back."

  • "A friend and I recently had dinner during Portland's Dining Month. This meant we had a limited menu (2 options percourse), but that didn't detract from the experience. Both of us agreed our winter vegetable turnover was truly excellent--and we loved the cheese sauce. The only problem was that it was large, and so good that we ate the entire thing, which meant we had little room by the time the entree came, but we managed. My tomato soup was a little over spiced, IMO, but still good. The sprinkle of cheese was a nice added touch. And my duck, marinated pears and kale were really excellent. Thankfully the restaurant provided doggie boxes so we could take home what we couldn't eat. Service was good, though a bit slow."

  • "23Hoyt has a very creative and foodie menu, more so than many other restaurants in the Portland area. Went with my family on a Saturday evening - make reservations! We were 6 people and I'm very glad I did. The food was delicious, but the service was a little sub-par for my personal preference. With dim lighting and tea candles on the tables, it's set for a date night more than a family night out. The waitresses and waiters would forget some of our food (which ended up being ok since we over-ordered), and they weren't very helpful or friendly. I prefer those who will be more sociable with the customers, rather than standoffish, but again that's my preference. Overall I'd go back for happy hour or a date."

  • "Completely unremarkable dining experience. Food was composed of quality ingredients yet lacked flavor. Service was efficient but not hospitable. Seemed to be just going through the motions."

  • "My friends and I had a great time at 23Hoyt. We enjoyed the food and the service. We loved sitting on the second floor and looking out at the lighted trees. Loved the music playing in the background."

  • "Entrées were great as well as the appetizers however the deserts left much to be desired even had to return one. That being said I would recommend dropping in on this place when you are next on 23rd good food with a crisp atmosphere."

  • "I tried the March fixed menu. The salad was too spicy and salty. The food was not very good. The service was slow. I won't be back."

  • "We decided to take advantage of the PDX Dining Month special. The server was friendly but forgot to ask us about our food. They fullfilled our special request for a private area and the restaurant is modern. Parking was easy. The Oxtail Croquettes were okay and the braised duck legs were VERY good! The butter leaf salad had too much dressing and it was extremely soggy, the tomatoes soup tasted like a canned one and the wild mushroom lasangna was AWFUL. We spent $80.00 and left the place hungry. On top of that, our friendly server had forgotten to put deodorant that day. He smelled. When he first reached out to get our plates, I gagged. I truly lost my apetite. It was like if we could taste his armpits! Gross! We are never going back!"

  • "Four of us came in for Brunch. The timing of the service was spot on & friendly. Eli, the GM is such a fabulous host, I could take him home! We all ordered omletes and various bubbly. Everyone remarked how light & fluffy the omelets were. At the end of the meal we were treated to an amazing dessert..a huge cinnamon roll with caramelized walnuts. Yum, yum...go to 23 Hoyt. You will not be disappointed!"

  • "We had a reservation and were still seated in the bar next to an obnoxious man who was loud and vulgar. A party was roaring upstairs. The food portions (scallops and chicken) were small and over priced."

  • "I last went there for valentine's day. They had changed their normal menu to a special (and of course, overpriced!) menu for valentine's day. The place was full. The food was okay: Their appetizers were great, the main dish was weak. They tried to make the food too exotic and succeeded wonderfully at the appetizers and failed at the entrees. No complaints about the service or about their booking system. This restaurant is great for casual dining but I would not go there again for a special occasion."

  • "Friday nights can be rather energetic here as the restaurant surrounds the bar. Signature cocktails are excellent and they will craft just about anything for you. The food was good but I know from history the quality can be inconsistent at times. Service was fair to good. The ambience is great for an upbeat night in the Pearl... not so much for a quiet, romantic get away. The building is clean, well kept and appropriately decorated."

  • "Five stars because I’ve liked 23Hoyt over multiple visits. But on this occasion, the potatoes were undercooked and the brussels sprouts in the hash were so undercooked they were inedible. I am not a person who likes over cooked veggies either. There is a lot of inconsistency in the food between visits and also the condiments you may or may not receive with a particular dish. And the server (Gerrin M-according to my receipt) was awful, inattentive, and has a smug and unsophisticated demeanor...when other servers have been excellent. I have noticed at several BCR the prices on the bill often differ by several dollars from the menu pricing (sometimes they are more or sometimes they are less)...which seems rather sloppy at this level."

  • "This was the second time my wife and I went to 23 Hoyt. I had taken her there about 2 years ago and we were impressed. She had been wanting to go back, so I surprised her on her birthday (also Christmas eve). Sadly this time around the service was the only high point of our visit. The food was rather bland and barely warm when it arrived at our table. It was as if the kitchen forgot to add seasoning or spices to the food this time; it just did not appear to have been made with the great care and attention our food received the first time we ate at 23 Hoyt. I will say our waitress was excellent, friendly and professional. Also the staff made sure the flowers I ordered for my wife were waiting at our table as I had asked."

  • "Good food (GREAT bread pudding dessert), gorgeous environs, convenient location to NW 23rd shopping--but our waitress was so blasé it seriously cut into our enjoyment of the meal. It took forever (about 25 minutes) just to get our order of drinks (one of which was a beer, the other straight liquor--no mixology involved). Hard to describe but the waitress--who seemed like she was about 17 years old--didn't fit the place. No love of food, no knowledge of the menu, no energy for the job."

  • "It used to be good. Now it's not. The wait staff is bored. The kitchen is obviously bored. The management must be bored. It's either time to reinvent or close. There are so many better choices. It's not worth the money, and it's not worth the hassle of the lousy parking around 23rd."

  • "I ordered the prefixe menu special for the Christmas Eve dinner and it was wonderful. The staff was great, and friendly. The main entrée the pork cheeks was succulent and tender, the sauerkraut was well balance not too acidic and I'm normally not a fan of sauerkraut. I'm definitely returning to this location."

  • "One start because the signature cocktails were excellent! Another star for the lovely ambiance. It goes downhill from there. The food was okay, if I'd gone to a place where I was expecting just okay food. The wine I recommended to complement my entree arrived as I was taking the last bites of my dinner...and I"m not a fast eater!"

  • "It was our first time dining here. We had heard good things and it definitely didn't disappoint. The food was awesome, the drinks were great, and the ambience was even better. It was energetic and lively without being noisy and the music was so good that we wanted to stay all night! A great place for delicious, gourmet food with a casual, elegant vibe that's not too stiff."

  • "We were excited to go to 23 Hoyt, given the reviews and looking at the menu on line. When we got there, the only table ready was right by the door. It was cold out, so we asked for a different table. We were given drink menus and left to sit on their cushy bench. We got our own menus and looked at it. There had been many vegetarian options on the web site, but almost none on the menu. At that point we decided just to leave and find a warmer, more vegetarian friendly location."

  • "waiter was nice but food service was spotty. they first forgot about the "no cheese" request, then it took them about 20-mins to replace the food, which came missing Rancheros sauce...they did make up for the mistake by giving us free donuts and free entree."

  • "My idea of a perfect meal: the Orchard Sour and Goat Tartar. A house-made cinnamon tincture with brandy and scotch. The tartar served with roasted bone marrow, sea salt, mustard, and micro greens... worth going back for alone. We also had a perfect Ceasar salad... you could taste the saltiness of the anchovies (how it is supposed to be). The short ribs were perfectly cooked almost sweet with a little maple (they say they were marinaded in root beer). The sea food stew was very briny with lots of mussels... and a generous portion of sea creatures. Everything was delicious. Service was good but our guy was a little busy with larger parties and we were left sitting with empty drinks a few times. But he was nice. We will definitely be back."
