About Zuni Cafe

This James Beard Award winning restaurant with a clientele as diverse as San Francisco opened in 1979. A vibrant Parisian-style standing-only copper bar greets you as you enter on Rose Alley. Zuni's menu changes daily with dishes inspired by traditional Italian and French recipes. Nearly all of the produce, meat, and fish served at Zuni is farmed and harvested in a sustainable manner.

Even without a reservation, bar tables are available on a first come, first served basis and the full menu is available. The bar also serves traditional cocktails made with top-shelf ingredients; refreshments at its best in an environment of effortless hospitality. Whether you dine early or prefer to dine after theater, Zuni is a welcoming haven.

I love Zuni, especially their pizza and caesar salad. Hey there are enough restaurants in San Francisco that I can have a favorite in everyone!! A devoted fan!

A visit to San Francisco would not be complete without dinner at Zuni Cafe. The restaurant is cozy and comfortable. The roast chicken with bread salad is outstanding and worth the wait! The food is fresh and farm to fork. We also love the orange salad and shoestring fries.

What happened to Zuni? The Zuni Caesar was inedible and took an hour to get to us.
While we were waiting we were brought someone else's drinks.
After waiting an hour for the salad, we flagged down another waiter as ours never came back. When she did come back, she had to ask what we ordered, "sorry, I have doctor's handwriting, can you tell me what you ordered again." I'm glad she is a waitress and not a doctor.

Both the pizza and steelhead were underwhelming.

Still going strong. Zuni’s Chicken for 2 is unlike any other chicken. It is extremely juicy and tops a bed of Thanksgiving worthy bread moistened by the drippings. I definitely recommend a trip to Zuni Cafe!

I can't say enough about the wonderful experience we had. The food, the wait staff, the ambiance, the other diners...it was all amazing. We had the split pea soup, orange scones with fig jam, Caesar Salad, and hamburgers. We will definitely go back. The gentlemen seated next to us, Jordan and Stephen, over heard that it was my mother's birthday and they had a piece of chocolate cake sent to her. This was a wonderful way to spend her 88th birthday.

The food was great. The waiter was pretty, but likely mute. For two reasons the balcony seating was horrible. First, the acoustics in the balcony are rediculously loud. I mean like you have to lean half way over the table throughout the conversation to hear your dinner partner. Two, the balcony has no ambiance. The main lower level dining room is beautiful. And indeed, is one of the big draws for eating a Zuni. But alas, the balcony the area is stark, cold, noisie and unbearable. I will never go back, and I intend to discourage others from going there. Say good bye Zuni.

The roasted chicken was amazing. I'd heard about it for some time and I was so glad we finally tried it. We visit SF about one to two times a year and decided to add Zuni to our dining rotation this trip. We were seated in a cozy corner table upstairs and enjoyed all aspects of the experience. It's a beautiful restaurant and the service was impeccable, as well. It'll definitely be one of our go-to restaurants every visit.

The food at Zuni has become completely underwhelming. Chicken and oysters aside, the kitchen is turning out uninspired and confused slop. Completely disappointed. I will sadly never return.

I was so disappointed. Adorable venue. We were seated in a cute corner on the second level. We were there for a late lunch 2pm. We did not want to wait for the chicken . We were driving and did not want to order wine or cocktails. The woodfired entrees were recommended so I ordered the pizza with ricotta insalata. My pizza was soggy in the middle and sad. My partner ordered the Quangs lamb sausage. It was tasty but not worth the cost. Perhaps we are spoiled from the PDX food scene. We chose to split dessert. The housemade icecream was more like an ice milk. No butter mouth feel. The cranberry compoted tasted like it was from a can. The walnuts were good.

Our server looked sad at our order and never came back to check on us during our meal. He arrived after our plates were cleared. I would have ordered a salad after my main course since it was so skimpy but was never asked if I needed anything.

Not worth the hype.

Start with the oysters and go where you want from there. Staff is always personable and knowledgeable. Food is comfort and creative and complementary to the experience. A great city experience in ambiance and style. Our date brunch choice whenever we have a few days to enjoy SF.

A stalwart that's always been a go to place but coasting a bit these days. Mains are too few and inaccessible (save the roasted chicken for 2/60 minutes) and often by 8p they run out of big sellers in the apps or large apps/small mains (risotta, gnocchi). Desserts are boring and tired. Sides and apps are fresh, good veggies. Seating a bit cramped in some places, with no back couch seats where you back onto other people's backs. A bit odd given their prices as its not a coffeehouse. So in that sense coasting/fallen down a notch. Service still very good

Visited this San Francisco institution, after walking by for many years. But why did we not go sooner?!?!
The chicken is as great as it comes. Crispy chicken skin and juicy.
A friend recommended the Caesar salad, and also did not disappoint. Garlicky with just a hint of anchovy.
Great wine list.
Unfortunately, no room for dessert.
Definitely will not walk by without stopping in.

We have been going here for many years and this is the first time we were so disappointed. When we arrived for an early reservation and the restaurant was half filled they tried to put us in a room that looked like an after thought. We then sat by a window which was very cold. The Caesar salad was still good but the chicken for two at $58 was not good. I ate the breast part and it was dry. My husband ate the thigh and leg which he said was good. The bread stuffing was delicious Wines by the glass was $17. We won’t be going back Sad that it has gone down hill

Part of neighborhood gem is the Green Arcade bookstore just down the block. I come early, shop the bookstore, then wait for my friends at the Zuni bar while perusing a good book. This year it was One Straw Revolutionary, a philosophy I find at Zuni: "...live simply, eat and sleep well, and just enjoy being alive..."

We had a very blase waiter who was not attentive and did not come to the table often enough to check-in. My friends ordered the burgers which are one of Zuni's signature dishes and they were underwhelming, not tasty. I didn't finish my pizza and asked to take home the leftover but our waiter forgot to bring it back to the table. For such an iconic restaurant and it being during the holidays, we did not have the magic experience that Zuni is capable of offering. However, the front of the house staff was efficient and friendly. One friend had forgotten their credit card in the check holder and they called me very soon after I left the restaurant to let me know to come back and get it.

I love chicken but as I’ve always been told, don’t order chicken when dining out, be more adventurous. That rule goes out the window here. The chicken was to die for living up to it’s storied reputation. But it’s not just because of the chicken, it’s the special bed of bread salad it comes with. Also, the service was excellent, the ambiance nice and comfortable without being uptight or stuffy. I loved the view from upstairs where you could look down at the fresh oyster bar and wood fired stove. Had a really great time here with friends and cant wait to go back.

Had not been to Zuni in many years as we moved away, but decided to meet friends from Santa Monica there for dinner last weekend. The look of the place has not changed and the food was still excellent. We started with the caesar salad. It had outstanding flavors with a hint of anchovy - yum. Three of us had the Passamore Ranch trout. All agreed it was the best we'd ever had. We observed delivery of their signature dish, chicken, to the table next to ours and vowed to order it at our next visit. Although chicken is somewhat of a pedestrian entree, the diners all said it was wonderful. In addition to great food, we also had great service. Our server was both knowledgeable and friendly. She was spot on with all of her recommendations - even the chicken which we did not try. Although the restaurant was very busy (reservations a must), our server did not rush us and allowed us enough time for a good visit. It will be our go-to place in the future in SF.

I went with my wife for my birthday and the meal did not disappoint! We had some of the freshest and most delicious oysters to start. The squid appetizer was amazing and the roasted chicken for 2 lived up to its reputation. I opted to skip the dessert which my wife knew I would. She anticipated this and asked that they bring something chocolate if I declined. They brought me a slice of chocolate cake that was incredible, light and chocolaty delicious. The service was great and our server was friendly, pleasant and attentive. We will be back!
