This James Beard Award winning restaurant with a clientele as diverse as San Francisco opened in 1979. A vibrant Parisian-style standing-only copper bar greets you as you enter on Rose Alley. Zuni's menu changes daily with dishes inspired by traditional Italian and French recipes. Nearly all of the produce, meat, and fish served at Zuni is farmed and harvested in a sustainable manner.

Even without a reservation, bar tables are available on a first come, first served basis and the full menu is available. The bar also serves traditional cocktails made with top-shelf ingredients; refreshments at its best in an environment of effortless hospitality. Whether you dine early or prefer to dine after theater, Zuni is a welcoming haven.

Lovely dinner.
The house cured anchovies with celery, Parma & olives which was bland.
Arugula salad delicious.
Main dish: Ricotta Gnocchi with spinach and saffron butter sauce was swimming in what appeared to be water. NOT good. Passmore Ranch trout was amazingly delicious.
Bread: They bring two slices at a time. Really?
Dessert a bit disappointing too....a chocolate Gateau with delicious whipped cream but a bit dry. We've eaten here many times and still will.. Service excellent

I was looking forward to taking my Dutch friends to Zuni as I have heard so much about it in the past. We were greeted and seated against the window which was pleasant. Waiter came over and asked for our drink order, I had a lemonade and my friend had a wine, so far so good. I ordered the burger, my friend ordered a bowl or polenta and a salad and my other friend ordered the pizza. Food was just so-so, the salad my friend had looked like one you could get in a cafeteria. My burger was decent, but at the end of the day, it was just a burger but on a square bun. Pizza was just ok. Waiter came over once to see if we wanted dessert, but we weren't interested. Service staff felt a bit snooty for no reason whatsoever except for the guy that refilled our water, he was actually the most personable. Check sat there for about 10 minutes before we actually had to ask them to pick it up. Between the food and the service and the amount for lunch, we'd rather much be somewhere else. Zuni is a icon to sf, but that was like 20 years ago. Menu needs a serious update and so does the staff.

We have a friend from Out of town who is gluten intolerant and pescatarian. She had the fish which was a bit overpriced and not that well seasoned. We had roasted fish a few nights ago which was brilliant and 7 less. Ambiance as always was lovely and service impeccable. Overall options r much better fir meat and wheat eaters.

Zuni is always a great choice when you can get a reservation. Consistently fresh and exciting. Hard to go wrong with the drinks or food.

I am giving one star for one reason. This establishment does not support the working class, nor it’s workers.

San Francisco has imposed a tax that enables the City to provide universal health care. Zuni Cafe could simply choose to treat this as it would any other cost of doing business, like buying toilet paper or paying rent, fold it into their bottom line and or raise prices, and carry on. they instead choose to passive aggressively call attention to it via a one line statement on the bottom of the menu whining about a 5% surcharge being added to the bill. This is a slap in the face to most of their staff whether they benefit from the Healthy San Francisco initiative or not.

Respect your workers, Zuni Cafe, and I’ll come back.

Bartenders are wonderful as well as the rest of
the staff. Love the menu and the local seasonal fare. Oyster selection is extensive however above average pricing kept us from ordering them.

We were initially seated near the kitchen, but the staff was helpful in seating us upstairs at a cozy table on the alley side...perfect...everything was great...particularly the oysters & the bass dinner...thank you for making my B Day special!

Birthday dinner. Seated on the second floor--only three of us but we couldn't hear each other...and hearing is not an issue in our group. Oysters were delicious as was the duck. The highlight was our server, Julia, who was top notch and put us on to a great Sancerre. Arugula salad was overdressed and the nocchi was disappointing. Not planning a return trip any time soon.
