About Zuni Cafe

This James Beard Award winning restaurant with a clientele as diverse as San Francisco opened in 1979. A vibrant Parisian-style standing-only copper bar greets you as you enter on Rose Alley. Zuni's menu changes daily with dishes inspired by traditional Italian and French recipes. Nearly all of the produce, meat, and fish served at Zuni is farmed and harvested in a sustainable manner.

Even without a reservation, bar tables are available on a first come, first served basis and the full menu is available. The bar also serves traditional cocktails made with top-shelf ingredients; refreshments at its best in an environment of effortless hospitality. Whether you dine early or prefer to dine after theater, Zuni is a welcoming haven.

I am giving one star for one reason. This establishment does not support the working class, nor it’s workers.

San Francisco has imposed a tax that enables the City to provide universal health care. Zuni Cafe could simply choose to treat this as it would any other cost of doing business, like buying toilet paper or paying rent, fold it into their bottom line and or raise prices, and carry on. they instead choose to passive aggressively call attention to it via a one line statement on the bottom of the menu whining about a 5% surcharge being added to the bill. This is a slap in the face to most of their staff whether they benefit from the Healthy San Francisco initiative or not.

Respect your workers, Zuni Cafe, and I’ll come back.

Bartenders are wonderful as well as the rest of
the staff. Love the menu and the local seasonal fare. Oyster selection is extensive however above average pricing kept us from ordering them.

We were initially seated near the kitchen, but the staff was helpful in seating us upstairs at a cozy table on the alley side...perfect...everything was great...particularly the oysters & the bass dinner...thank you for making my B Day special!

Birthday dinner. Seated on the second floor--only three of us but we couldn't hear each other...and hearing is not an issue in our group. Oysters were delicious as was the duck. The highlight was our server, Julia, who was top notch and put us on to a great Sancerre. Arugula salad was overdressed and the nocchi was disappointing. Not planning a return trip any time soon.

We ate at Zuni Cafe after seeing a show at the SHN Orpheum. We were lucky to get a cab though it would have been an easy 10 minute walk. We were initially seated at a table which had a shared bench with the table behind us. This felt uncomfortable to us so we moved into the bar and had a great dinner.

I've been coming to Zuni since the early 90's. It's my absolute favorite restaurant in NYC. The service and food is amazing. You must have a reservation or be prepared to wait. The only thing that sometimes is annoying the the host(s) can be a little prickly. On our most recent visit, one host was super nice, the other was unpleasant. Luckily the nicer one took over and gave us a table right away.

I’ve loved Zuni’s for over 2 decades, and will continue to dine there. However, on this occasion I ordered the burger well done, it wasn’t. Went back and it came again still not well done . To Zuni’ credit , and this meant a lot, as it was a business lunch, I was not charged for the sandwich.

We arrived right on time and with hungry expectation. The hostess was less than bland and unwelcoming - no smile, no welcome to Zuni, nothing - bad start - led to table and unless in the main floor or the visible balcony the ‘ambience’ vanishes quickly.
Caesar salad excellent, drinks great, the roasted chicken so known for was okay - if you have ever roasted your own at home you’ll not be surprised by anything.
I’m not clear what all the fuss is about this restaurant and you have lots of choices in SF.

Decided to go here after seeing great ratings on this place in 'Infatuation'. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. The ambiance was great, place looked amazing, but the food and drinks didn't deliver.
First off, the Old Fashioned I ordered was basically crushed ice and bitters. For the price you're paying for a cocktail, you'd think they would at least play on good whiskey - but we couldn't even taste it. By the time it got to us, (and it wasn't long at all) it was more water than whiskey since they used a lot of crushed ice.
For dinner, I ordered the pork roast. I was excited since the food got such good ratings. I figured, what is a bad drink if i've got amazing food to make up for it? I was unfortunately let down again. The food is small portions, which I wasn't aware of before i showed up. You should be aware, it's small portions. So, i thought maybe it'll taste phenomenal. Again, i was let down. the food was a cool room temperature, and had a very bland taste. Nothing about it jumped out at me. It was an extreme let down considering they only gave me 3 finger-sized slices of pork roast, 3 mini mini sweet potato fry things, and about 5 individual brusel sprouts (ok, i'm exaggerating, maybe it was 7).

All in all, it didn't live up to the hype and i was left disappointed, hungry, and sober. If you're going to drop over $100 on two people, go somewhere else.

We can see where it would be a great place. We inquired for ordering input from our waiter and he emphasized the special associated with the guest chef. We went with his advocacy and it wasn't that great (his input must have been programmed jive). The bread, salad, and wine we're a delight, but the main course was a bust. Oh well....

Delicious food, great service & fun atmosphere. A little on the loud side but every restaurant now-a-days is the same. It's a shame one doesn't break away and begin the trend of toning it down. But, can't blame Zuni for that. All-in-all, a lovely evening.

I've been going to Zuni since the earliest days of the restaurant, when it occupied only a small portion of the space it does now. The shoestring potatoes are still delicious, and though we didn't order it on this visit, the roast chicken with bread salad is rightly legendary.

On this night my arugula salad was delicious and the ricotta gnocchi were perfect - light and airy as a gnocchi should be.

However, the linguini with clams (while generous with the clams!) suffered from a too-salty broth, and the sauce for the scallops lacked depth of flavor and the little mollusk muscles themselves were just slightly undercooked.

One of our party ordered the lamb. In my experience, waiters will either ask you how you like your meat cooked or say something like "medium-rare OK?" That didn't happen here and we were so caught up in conversation that we were surprised when the dish came and it was rare. Not medium-rare. Rare. The person who ordered it didn't want to make a fuss, so he didn't send it back, but he didn't enjoy his meal. A little information from the server would have been most helpful here.

A disappointing outing. But the fresh lemonade was amazing!

It is all about the food, and the food is wonderful. So many good tastes, many different choices and great people. The wine list is small but good value, it is a great restaurant without a lot of unneeded fluff and puff.

Very great to see the old crew. Super handling of the squid and of all the vegetables -- we had a vegetable plate, escarole, fava sprouts (!), gigante or fava beans (probably the latter), mushrooms, rapini or something like it. Very nice. Also had striped bass, which was super.

Overall a big disappointment. Food was surprisingly mediocre. E.g., had duck breast, not at all special & served without sauce & with limp overcooked vegetables. Service was OK. Very noisy on main floor, less so upstairs & at back. Overpriced. Will not return

We ordered the signature roast chicken, (it's as good as ever, and one order was plenty for our table of four)
We ordered four side dishes: polenta, mixed veggies, clams, and Caesar salad.
Very happy with our choice to eat at Zuni!

Zuni is a San Francisco institution. No matter how long between visits, Zuni feels like that old friend, always warm and inviting, and just gets exactly what you like.

We went for Sunday brunch this last visti with an out of town friend. Light streaming through the windows, great craft cocktails, oysters, best little shoestring frites.
What could be better?
