Zuni Cafe Ratings and Reviews
$60 for a chicken for two?! If that’s the case it better be the best chicken in my entire life. Instead it was pretty dry. We also ordered the Stemple Creek appetizer. Four tiny slices of beef for $14. This place is pricey for what you get. Service and dessert were about the only good things this place has to offer. After spending $150 before tip, I think there are better values and better food elsewhere.
We have been dining at Zuni for years when we visit SF from NYC after a week in Napa, probably over 15 years now, it was always our go to.. This past experience on 11/18/17 was not like all the rest. We were sat at a tourist table next to kitchen. Table 16, very distracting and not really appealing at all. Our server was not on his game, he forgot to bring a side dish we ordered, we had to ask for bread twice from other staff, when bread is typically brought soon after you are seated, and then the server abruptly dropped the check without asking us if we were interested in dessert, which we were. He stated when we informed him that we were not done with our evening, he just came back from being off and to not take it personally. Really? We were pretty disappointed, we never had an off experience at Zuni. We tipped the server accordingly, which is not easy for us, we are both in the hospitality business (food & wine). One other note, Zuni Caesar salad is always solid and dressed perfectly. Saturday night, the salad was soaked in dressing. Maybe just an off night overall, pretty disappointing though. The ratings above are based on this dining experience.
Overall my experience at Zuni Cafe was underwhelming. After hearing so much about the restaurant, my expectations were very high, however our service was below average for the type of experience I was expecting. The food and atmosphere were great, but our server did not make us feel welcome or meet the standards I would expect for such an expensive restaurant.
Memorable evening spent post SF Symphony to celebrate two birthdays and one inaugural performance. Staff was more than accommodating when we called to say that we would be arriving later than expected. Upon arrival, we immediately placed our order for the roast chicken, then settled in for a leisurely evening of sampling their sparkling wines and appetizers. Our party of five shared the roast chicken (moist and favorable), the pork chop (thick and juicy), the halibut (wonderful pairing sauce), and the beef bourguignon (so tender). The broccoli rabe and gnocchi helped to round out our tasting menu. Not a single miss amoungst the lot. Needless to say, we all left with food for several meals. Attentive staff, nice whiskey menu, and a corner table by the window. Could not have asked for a better way to celebrate our loved ones. Highly recommended.
We had a performance to go to so got there at 6. The waitstaff checked in with us every couple minutes which was very nice. It may have been because we were so early but in my experience the service is always very good. I got a salad, which I always find too small in restaurants (I want more veggies), but the ingredients were very fresh and tasty. Overall, this place is always wonderful if you can get in!
Food and service were both exceptional. We had a reservation for 2 and called at last minute to ask if a friend could join and they were able to accommodate. Also Lyft ride took longer than planned due to wrong turn; I called to warn we would be about 10 minute late and they were very nice about it. Servers knowledgeable, friendly, never rushed us. We had a leisurely, multi-hour meal that was phenomenal. Highly recommend!
You can't go wrong here. The service is personable, the food is reliably delicious with an ever-changing seasonal menu. A great place to get a feel for the original San Francisco (well, original for my gen X/Millenial generation). I can't wait to return. Get a cocktail beforehand at Martuni's down the street for that extra San Francisco flavor.
2nd visit and we were underwhelmed. Our waiter was below average. If you pay AUD 100 for a bottle of wine, I don’t expect to top our glasses EVERY time. The salad appetiser was poor value. We decided to not have the chicken as we had it last time....bad choice! My wife’s squab was ordinary, my steak was OK. Dessert was the best dish. Won’t go back.
