Zuni Cafe in the Civic Center is still an icon, and it sits firmly at the top of our list of favorite restaurants in this town.
Disappointing. Neil Perry led us astray.
Service was very prompt and helpful. Food just seemed a bit bland, especially for the price. Oysters we're good.
Zuni always delivers a 1st class , Californian casual vibe that is suffeciently elegant.
The roast chicken was amazing. Highly recommended! Great Caesar salad, too.
I'm moving out of state and HAD to visit Zuni before we leave San Francisco. As always, Zuni did not disappoint. The old standbys: anchovies, Caesar, and chicken were outstanding, and everything else we ordered was delicious. Our waitress was attentive, but not overbearing, and made some excellent wine recommendations. Zuni truly stands the test of time.
Zuni Cafe is always fantastic! I’ve been going there for 30 years and have never had a bad meal or experience! Highly recommend Zuni Cafe to anyone!
The famous chicken was as delicious as expected- the bread salad and accompanying vegetables were also particularly tasty. Though the chicken was good, I think the appetizers we tried were even more delicious- so many interesting flavor combinations! we LOVED the prosciutto/burrata combo with kumquat relish and the carrots with Moroccan spices and grapefruit. will have to come back to try the dessert!
Great service. Fresh and locally sourced food. Comfortable seating. Cozy ambiance.
We try to get here at least once per month and are never disappointed. The food is always excellent and the service is very good.
Wonderful pasta dish and great French wine. I’ll go back when I have more time for the famous roasted chicken.
This is our first choice for our annual get together
We had the chicken again and it did not disappoint. The broccoli Jerusalem artichoke soup was delicious. It had an earthy flavor w a gentle bite.
Zuni always delivers! I took a friend from out of town and we both had a wonderful meal with great service.
Superb food, consistently so...as is the great service. Lovely space. I've been there four times and will certainly go back again!
Zuni cafe continues to be a favorite for their delicious brown bread, excellent choice of the best and freshest oysters and roast chicken. My visits which started with its first year improve improve every time i return.
Good as always. Our usual stop on the way to the SF Symphony.
Just flew in from Hawaii and went straight to Zuni for lunch. My husband loves the burger and shoestring fries. I love the Caesar salad.....
Always a great meal when we come!
Valet parking $14. We ordered two cocktails which were tasty and pretty strong. Everyone around us was ordering the chicken which looked amazing, but the serving was huge... enough for 3-4 people, and there were only two of us. We ordered it anyway and had no regrets. Since the chicken takes an hour, we ordered half a dozen raw osysters (three different types recommended by the chef) and the anchovies. Everything was fresh, creative, and delicious. The hour wait for the chicken went by fast. It was tender and juicy. Underneath the chicken was a dressing of bread, pine nuts, some fresh greens on top...delicious combination. It was one of the best chicken dishes I’ve ever had. Shared the panna cotta for dessert. It was creamy and light—almost like a cheesecake—with ginger cookie crumbs and zesty lemon. It was super yummy. The service and ambiance were both great...lively, fun place with great food and a nice setting.
We were 4 new friends meeting to discuss changes coming in our lives and how we might be moving ahead. Zuni Cafe was perfect. Their menu, tho not extensive is varied. The service, friendly and efficient. Tho the lunch time crowd was lively, we had no problem with the noise level and the staff was wonderful in not rushing us to leave tho we had been there quite awhile.
The "late night find" category mentioned above sounds like my husband and I should check it out sometime after the symphony or ballet! Will have to come again in afternoon to check out the coffee/tea scene and later the bar scene, tho' I'm guessing the coffee is lovely and the bar scene lively!
This place is amazing. I mentioned it was a date when I made the online reservation, and they sat us in a great double table facing the kitchen. It was great to watch the team make their food. The food, scenery, and service are all near perfect. This is definitely one of the best restaurants in San Francisco.
The chicken for 2 and the house-cured anchovies are a must.
Wonderful meal in San Francisco. Great cocktails, fantastic roast chicken, good service &
Everything we ate was wonderful! There were four of us and we shared most of the items. We had the oysters. Not my thing but the two that ate agreed that they were fresh and great tasting. We had the chicory salad that was very good with a great balance of flavors. We then had the polenta with mascarpone and the broccoli dish. For our main course, we shared the roasted chicken. I could go there every week to eat that chicken with the bread salad. Yes, that good. We all got different desserts and no one was disappointed. Garret, our server, was most helpful and very friendly. We will go back!
What can I say! I have been a fan of Zuni Cafe from the mid 80’s when I lived in SF and now is my go to when I am in San Francisco. Zuni is consistently Amazing in every way, from the food to service this institution never fails to impress! Best roast chicken you will taste. Incredible pizza and wonderful seasonal dishes simply prepared. Judy Rodgers is sending her magic from heaven above.
Zuni never disappoints. The oysters by species list is the place to start. Pair it with a nice crisp Muscadet and try not to fill up on the Acme psin levain they have specially dark-roasted. Why not? Because the wood oven-roasted chicken with salad greens (red frisée this time) atop toasted bread awaits. The service is casual yet precise, the decor upscale yet rustic. Thus remains a very special place.
First thing you need to know about Zuni is order the roasted chicken for two immediately when you are seated. While you wait there is a huge wine and cocktail list and some really good appetizers to choose from, its forever changing so there is always something exciting to pick from. Enjoy the exceptional service and the last thing you need to know is to order the flour-less chocolate cake.
This is one of our SF favorites and this visit did not disappoint. Our server was excellent and made fantastic recommendations for wine and oysters. We’ll definitely be back the next time we are in SF!
I have been dining here for decades and always love my favorites the hamburger, ceasare 🥗, the roast chicken , the French fries 🍟 and of course the chocolate gateaux
Caesar salad, burger, merguez sausage, chocolate torte comprised our lunch. Food was good, nothing exceptional. Service was perfunctory. We don’t care for chummy servers, but our server at lunch exercised a haughty disdain with nano-second flashes of smile.
Hmmm, I guess that’s why we strive to be excellent and discerning home cooks. Restaurants all too often fall short at too high a price for the dining experience.
The chicken is the best thing ! So worth the wait.
I don't know how Zuni does it - stay so good after so many years. It still feels fresh, too, which is really amazing considering I don't think it has been renovated since it opened so many years ago.
Everything was spot on. A Fabulous experience from start to finish.
Best chicken I have had :)
Great as usual. Everyone at the table voiced great pleasure with the meal and service!
The Roasted Chicken is always the best. Great Oysters, Wine and service. Will be back next time we are in town.
Wonderful, as always. Maybe the best chicken, anywhere!
I hadn't been to Zuni Cafe in a few years, but was in The City to see a museum exhibit with friends so decided to visit Zuni for lunch. We had a 1:45pm reservation but arrived almost an hour early and were delighted that we could be seated (early!) within 15 minutes. We had a great table, efficient but unobtrusive waiter, and as I had remembered from the past, excellent food! Most of our party had burgers, but I had the sea bass; not a crumb was left behind on any of our plates. We also shared an order of shoestring potatoes that were the best any of us had ever eaten. Ditto for the bread and sweet butter that is brought to the table shortly after being seated. Besides the food, we loved the ambiance; people watching in the cafe and watching the urban sights on Market Street. I have already made another reservation for a birthday celebration next month!
Food was mediocre. I had the rack of lamb, which supposed to be medium, but was delivered nearly rare and not hot. My wife had oysters and a salad. She enjoyed them. Beautiful place, they gave me what I thought was a great corner table, but a constant draft of air was our unasked for companion. I doubt that we’ll be back.
The house cured anchovies with celery, Parma & olives which was bland.
Arugula salad delicious.
Main dish: Ricotta Gnocchi with spinach and saffron butter sauce was swimming in what appeared to be water. NOT good. Passmore Ranch trout was amazingly delicious.
Bread: They bring two slices at a time. Really?
Dessert a bit disappointing too....a chocolate Gateau with delicious whipped cream but a bit dry. We've eaten here many times and still will.. Service excellent
