About Zuni Cafe

This James Beard Award winning restaurant with a clientele as diverse as San Francisco opened in 1979. A vibrant Parisian-style standing-only copper bar greets you as you enter on Rose Alley. Zuni's menu changes daily with dishes inspired by traditional Italian and French recipes. Nearly all of the produce, meat, and fish served at Zuni is farmed and harvested in a sustainable manner.

Even without a reservation, bar tables are available on a first come, first served basis and the full menu is available. The bar also serves traditional cocktails made with top-shelf ingredients; refreshments at its best in an environment of effortless hospitality. Whether you dine early or prefer to dine after theater, Zuni is a welcoming haven.

Zuni is my "go to" place when I want to enjoy a special brunch or lunch with friends. It reminds me of being in a casual, chic restaurant in Paris with great service and innovative dishes.

We were not seated for our 1:00 pm reservation until at least 1:30. It was a holiday lunch so not a great way to start for sure. Thank goodness the food was as good as always.

I went with my wife for my birthday and the meal did not disappoint! We had some of the freshest and most delicious oysters to start. The squid appetizer was amazing and the roasted chicken for 2 lived up to its reputation. I opted to skip the dessert which my wife knew I would. She anticipated this and asked that they bring something chocolate if I declined. They brought me a slice of chocolate cake that was incredible, light and chocolaty delicious. The service was great and our server was friendly, pleasant and attentive. We will be back!

Well liked restaurant for all San Franciscans; given there are so many good restaurants one should visit Zuni at least twice a year. Very consistent and excellent food, and friendly wait staff.

Having been enthusiastic patrons of Zuni Cafe almost since its inception, we returned this week for dinner after a long absence. I am very sorry to say that, the quality of the food was not up to prior standards. I had a dozen oysters, which used to be heaven on earth. But this time they are inexpertly shucked, and a number of them were pierced. Some also tasted as thought they might have sat around a bit too long. My husband had the clam chowder, which was fine but not exceptional; and deep fried vegetables, which were too spicy. The wine list also seemed less well selected (we had one of the more moderately priced, a white Vezelay which was unremarkable). All their wines by the glass were Californian, not their prior mix of European and domestic. It was disappointing. Hope it was simply an off night.

California Classic Still Going Strong.

I've been going to Zuni Cafe for over 20 years and although San Francisco is constantly changing Zuni remains pretty much the same as ever (apart from the prices). It's a great choice for unpretentious, plain, simple, quality food.

The one thing that you need to watch out for is where you are seated. Upstairs is like a rabbit warren with lots of tables in odd nooks and crannies; it can also get very hot upstairs especially if you're near the downstairs wood burning oven.

Downstairs a lot of the seating is unconventional with lots of tables having bench seats where 2 diners have to sit next to each other because the other side of the table is a thoroughfare for busy waiters and diners wandering around.

The wine list has too much focus on expensive wines (the least expensive decent wine is about $70) and they have great cocktails and a nice copper bar to sit/stand at.

Well, everyone agreed that the Caesar salad was fabulous, as so many reviews have stated. We were, however, underwhelmed by a couple of the starters and one entree.

One appetizer was literally a piece (one) of garlic bread with a couple of slices if raw carrot and radish; it looked pathetic on the plate and would've been overpriced at $2 but it was probably $8 or more. Why didn't anyone in the kitchen notice this sadness?

Service was fine but nothing to write home about. Has Zuni list its soul, its joie de vivre, we wonder...the vibe was all good but the experience was not!

We had a 1 pm lunch reservation and were seating promptly. We were seated upstairs in an area with one side open to the first floor. It was extremely noisy. So much so that we could not hold a conversation. Fortunately, when we complained and asked to be moved, we were re-seated in a quieter area. Huge improvement and it was much appreciated. The food was very good but not exceptional. We ordered the roast chicken, which was delicious but nothing extraordinary. Service was excellent. Still, I probably wouldn't go back because of the noise level.

Celebrated the holiday season with a festive lunch at Zuni. As always, great food and service. But it was bustling, and therefore so loud it was a little difficult to talk.

Was there for my wife's 60th B-Day. We had the Wood fired chicken for two which was so good even with the hr wait to cook it. The service was great and we were always attended too. Found free parking 2 blocks away which is always good.
I'd go there again and a nice thing about it was it was started in 1979 the yr we were married.
Nice place an I'd go there again.

The chicken for two is one of the great American dishes — sort of the Platonic ideal.

It does take an hour so that order a few drinks and initial courses.

I think I had really high expectations coming in and ultimately the food was worth it but 2 notes. The hostess was somewhat unprofessional. I showed up 10 minutes early to my reservation and she seemed completely preturbed. I didn't ask to sit down early or anything, was just there. Also the gnocchi was seriously dissappointing (almost gross even). The chicken was good and I think the wine was by far the most exceptional part of our meal. Would go again maybe at a lunch or brunch?

Been waiting to confirm that the chicken here is the best you can get, anywhere. Confirmed. Ain't nothin like SF's food -- sorry New York. If you're visiting SF and can eat at only one good restaurant, it's here.

We have been to this place many times and this last time was my least favorite. First, we ordered a selection of oysters and they tasted fishy and old. Second we had the roast chicken. We usually love this dish but this time, albeit still good, the white meat was a little dry. Finally we had ricotta gnocchi. These were outrageous.
On this particular evening the service felt rushed and not very attentive.

My mom and I went here before the theater, which was perfect. The ZUNI pinot is one of my all time faves! I usually get the chicken, no brainer, but this time we got the gnocchi, sea bass and polenta. It was such a great meal, with great ambiance and our server, Antonio, was delightful!

Normally I love Zuni but this time I wasn't that impressed. The food seemed so over-the-top salty. I like a healthy amount of salt on my food but -- except the under-salted polenta -- it was seriously over-seasoned.

After living in the Bay Area for 35 years and trying many restaurants...I Finally made it to Zuni Cafe. Dining here was a complete pleasure- the menu is well executed, wine list is well thought out and there are many selections...overall ambiance is comfortable and upscale. I really enjoyed my meal and service and all else--my only regret was not dining here much earlier. I will definitely be back!
Food- I started with the sardines and was told they been on the menu for decades-its easy to see why- simply delicious! Then the pasta of the day with a Zin- a house made tagliatelle with duck , pork, and beef ragu with fresh spinach--all served with ample butter and Acme bread. I ended with a perfect espresso
Delightful place with excellent service!
