Zula Bistro & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
We were 5 on a Tuesday evening and ordered a variety of entrees and sides to share. Every single dish was excellent. Everything about Zula was first class: the service, the food, and the ambience. I'd call it casual fine dining. I especially loved the Rare Seared Scottish Salmon.
I had fun. Two drinks in an hour and a half so I was enthusiastic but couldn't help feeling service was for lack of a better word, distant. If I were in their place I would celebrate my guests having a good time far from being an obnoxious drunk. There is a way to inset yourself into the mood of the table get your job done and manage to enjoy yourself.
I have only been to Zula one time before with friends. Our family of 4 went this time. The food was awesome but the wait is long. We didn't mind because we rarely get to spend time with everyone together. My complaint is the $$ rating. This is at least a $$$ restaurant. For four adults we spend $190.
Lots of options of mussels, large daily menu. Waiter was very helpful in reviewing the menu and offering recommendations. We had the seasonal heriloom tomato salad, traditional mussels, brussel sprout flat bread (wood fired!) and the brownie dessert. A of it was delicious and we will definitely return.
Celebrated a friend's promotion and this was the perfect place for a group of 5 on a Friday night! Sometimes it can be so hard to find a place to eat in OTR, especially for groups. This was perfect because we could make a reservation and the food was amazing!
I have eaten at Zula many times with a group, and it has always been a great experience. For the first time, I went to Zula as a party of two, and the experience was terrible. The first table they sat us at was right next to a large, noisy air vent, and it was dificult to hear each other talk. When we requested a new table, they moved us to one situated right next the kitchen and the area where the servers stood when not serving patorns. When we requested another table, they refused to move us because we were a party of two. There were numerous tables available because it was early in the evening. We decided to make the best of it, but the situation only went downhill. During our meal, many servers hung out next to our table, and two of them were actually playing a patty cake game. Once the food came, our server constantly hurried us along and tried to take our plates before we were finished. While we were eating our entree, she came to the table with the dessert menu and held it up and began going through the desserts. She did not seem pleased when we asked her to wait until we were finished. While we were eating she stood next to our table with her hands behind her back waiting for us to finish. I understand the desire to maximize profits with larger groups, but the extent to which we were made to feel unwelcome has changed the high opinion I had of Zula.
We had a great experience at this restaurant. We started at the bar with a few beer and wine tastings. The bar staff was very knowledgeable about both and offered great suggestions. Sat in the window seat for our meal - noise level was fine for a conversation. We had the calamari that was very tender and had the right amount of citrus to balance the dish. Tuna small plate feature was very tasty with grapefruit and a pea puree. Finished with a flatbread that had a nice crust and mix of toppings. Staff was very friendly and overall it was an excellent experience.
This was our fist time at Zula, and we will definitely be returning. We enjoyed the community table setting and had fun conversations with our dining neighbors. My wife, 19-year-old daughter and I opted to share three menu items, and that was more than enough food for us. We thought each dish was fantastic: the Vietnamese-style mussels, the brussels sprouts flatbread, and the yellow fin tuna crudo. Our table neighbor was a regular, and she recommended ordering bread rolls to soak up the mussel broth, and we were so glad she did. IMO, the rolls should automatically come with the mussels, or at least be suggested on the menu so you don't leave all the delicious broth in the pot.
Zula exceeded my expectations. Everything was delicious and creative. Flatbread amazing and the mussels truly outstanding- the best mussels and broth I've had outside of Scotland (great fish place in Oban). Get the classic French broth. And MUST get the basket of bread, especially if ordering mussels. Beet salad was also amazing. Between all of us, everything we ordered was unbelievably good, including wine and dessert.
