Zula Bistro & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I have had a favorite restaurant in Cincinnati since we were in 13 years ago. I took her to the Palomino for our first date and we loved the food and the atmosphere and the location so much that it became a regular spot for celebrating special occasions. Last year, however, on a whim, we tried Zula for the first time and we suddenly have another spot vying for our favorite. The mussels here are out of this world! And, while we haven't tried everything on the menu, our server has helped us to find great choices each of the three times we've eaten here. Between the knowledgable staff, the great food and the fun, casual and yet somewhat romantic atmosphere, I have never had a bad experience. We have raved about this restaurant to many of our friends and hope one day to make it a group date night.
I have been to Zula many times and always have great food. Not only are they one of the few restaurants in OTR that actually accept reservations but they are great for groups too! I just had a group of about 6 go there for my birthday dinner and the best thing is that most of the plates are shareable. In a large group you can almost try everything on the menu... almost. If it's just two dining, you can share a lot of different things and just tell the server if you want some to come out first or all together and they are great at accommodating!
We came in on a slow Tuesday evening. I've dined here many times and it's always great-- you can never go wrong with mussels and eggplant "fries" sooo yummy. However, their flatbread oven was down so they were unable to make any flat breads. Wish they told us this before we ordered apps. We left and went to A Tavola for pizza after we ate some mussels. No biggie, still a great place.
We love this place! Ordered the Thai and Traditional French mussels. Make sure to order the bread to dip in the mussel sauce! Eggplant fries are awesome! Honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of the flat breads but it seems like a lot of people like them. Overall, fun place for an energetic dinner with friends or family!
First time at Zula's and we will be back. Four of us dined before the Cincinnati Pops and the server asked if we were going to the Pops to be sure she took care of us. Service was great-team approach with the staff. Our table tried 4 types of mussels-New Orleans, French, Thai and Mediterranean. The flavors were awesome, the broth is wonderful to dip their delicious home made bread. We had the seared salmon crudo-another winner. Great prices on bottles of wine. New restaurant favorite -we loved it.
Try any of the mussels! Love the seared salmon and the carpaccio, too. Service there is always the best -- super great staff. Great wine list, well-organized, with plenty of variety. Good beers (try the Boulevard Radler). Zula is perhaps my favorite restaurant in OTR. Park across the street at the underground garage in Washington Park...
This is the second time we have eaten at Zulu and the food has been consistently good. The wood fired pizzas are some of the best I have had. The negative I have is the service both visits has been sub par compared to other good restaurants in the downtown area. The servers act like they don't care about your experience and they are non attentive. I would recommend the restaurant for food not good service.
Three guys out for dinner in Over-the-Rhine and Zula seemed like the right choice: good kitchen and a good wine list. We weren't disappointed and were particularly grateful that our greeter was willing to change our table when we found ourselves next to a table full of young shrieking women. The table to which we were moved was much better, though still a bit loud. There's no doubt in my mind that Zula is one of the places in the hot O-T-R restaurant scene that's worth repeated visits.
I could come here every week! The eggplant fries are unique, flatbreads delicious and who knew there were so many ways to serve mussels. While it's not a huge menu, it's all good, and even with a range of tastes there is no problem finding something you're sure to like.
We must be in a rut. We do not get down to OTR much but when we do, we always say we will try a new place. But we always end up at Zula's. We shared a pot of Mussels. We tried the Funghi Mussels for the first time and they were fantastic. The Yellow Fin Crudo was also terrific. We were in a noisy spot with lots of waiter traffic, but we didn't mind.
We made a reservation which was good because this place was packed and loud! We decided to chose a few different items to share. Thai mussels, roasted tomato flatbread and the deconstructed moussaka. The mussels were good but I actually thought the broth was too spicy - would probably try a different preparation next time. The flatbread was delicious! The concept was so simple yet it was elevated. The moussaka was great but a little hard to eat with forks since it was in small pieces, maybe also could serve it in a bowl rather than plate so it is easier to eat. Had an extensive wine menu with varying prices which was nice. The service was good and the wait wasn't long. We were full and didn't have dessert but they looked good from what we saw coming out.
Overall the experience was great. The wine and food were both of great quality, taste, and presentation. Our waitress was very kind, helpful with recommendations, and very tentative to our needs.
However, one of the tables in our area had the impression that everyone else wanted to hear their conversations; it was a little frustrating to hear the kackles every other minute. Not only for me, but the other guests around us.
There are now so many great restaurants in Cincinnati to choose from, but Zula is always one at the top of our list. They have the best mussels in town, and we are making our way through their menu of mussel options. The bread to dip in the juices is heavenly, and the charred calamari is the perfect starter.
We had the opportunity to go to Zula last night. We started with the Charred Calamari and it was wonderful! Then my husband and I split the Funghi Mussels and Thyme Roasted Tomato Flat Bread. Both were absolutely amazing! Our server paired our meal with a great wine and we couldn't have been happier. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for an evening out. Delicious!!
