Z'Tejas Tempe Ratings and Reviews
Few years ago this was a great place to grab a steak. Steak was the only thing that was even passable. Start with the drinks. I ordered 3 different margarittas and they all tasted exactly them same, horrible. They now charge extra for the cornbread, which use to come with your meal. My rib-eye was cooked correctly but was a very thin cut. The mushroom sauce was excessive and very sweet?. Mashed potatoes that are served with the steak were instant, dry, and just plain blah. Vegetables were very obviously of the frozen mixed cauliflower, carrots, broccoli variety. We didn't bother with dessert. Will not be going back......
I moved away from Arizona 10 years ago and have not been to a Z'Tejas since. Where I recalled an innovative dining experience I now found a nice but formalistic eatery with somewhat bland food. Frankly l, this is a pricey version of Chili's that is not worth the extra cost.
We arrived and were seated promptly. Looking over the menu and the Happy Hour Specials, we had a couple of questions. The waiter answered them and we ordered. When our food arrived, we realized the waiter had given us the incorrect information on portion size. We therefor had over ordered and some of our food went to waste. We mentioned this to the waiter and he said he gave us incorrect information.
The margaritas were fantastic.
We come to Spring Training every year and make Z'Tejas Tempe one of our stops.
Excited to share ZTejas with our friends. Ordered some of our favorite appetizers and drinks. Then our experience went downhill...waited over an hour on our food, never received two items that we ordered. Had a great waitress, but she kept apologizing for the delays. Would understand if the restaurant was crowded, but it was not?!
Even before moving to Phoenix we enjoyed ZTejas - I still remember while we mused over home listings as we contemplated our relocation to the Valley - our waitress bringing us a second skillet of cornbread. So imagine our disappointment at learning this has been replaced with chips and salsa - granted, the chips and salsa are quite good, but the cornbread was special. I know that the couple at the table next to us was also disappointed.
Otherwise the food and service were very good, as always.
We wanted to authentic Mexican food compared to what we have in Michigan. This restaurant delivered. The food had so many different flavors I don't know how I can go back to MichiMexican food. I think the food prices were a bit high. I would probably go back to this place if I find myself in Phoenix/Tempe again.
In a time crunch, I went to Z'Tejas with some family for a quick lunch. I had an appointment to make in Scottsdale in under an hour and a half from when we were seated. Although I had made a reservation, the restaurant was very empty for a weekday afternoon. Although though I arrived at the restaurant before my family, I was promptly seated and asked if I wanted a drink. Soon after I was asked if I wanted an appetizer, but I opted to wait for the arrival of my family. Once my family finally arrived, we quickly ordered our entrees. I asked for a dish without sour cream while someone else in my family asked for the rainbow trout. After waiting an unusually long period of time (given the number of people in the restaurant) for our food, we received my dish, which was covered in sour cream and a family member's dish which was salmon, not trout. Seeing as we were in a time crunch, we decided not to send our food back and ate it anyway. All dishes had a nice flavor. After we finished eating, we were eager to get our checks, but our waitress was busy laughing with some friends in another part of the restaurant, with her back turned toward us. Finally, after several minutes, she saw us trying to get her attention and came over with the check.
I would say that the service in this location could use some improvement. The location is very close to ASU's Tempe campus and appears staffed with students. From my own college experience, I know how it is easy to be occasionally apathetic about your job while going to school because you know that it's only temporary and that you'll be soon moving on to (hopefully) bigger and better things. Still, it would be nice if a little bit more effort were placed into making sure that your tables are taken care of.
We like to go to ZTejas on Mill before our Gammage shows. I always make a reservation, since you never know how busy it will be, even midweek. Sometimes it's not busy, so make sure the hostess checks that you do in fact have a reservation and mark you as having showed up. At times this can be a challenge, making it look like you were a no-show. Food and service are always great, their happy hour menu is awesome and goes until 7PM.
We ate here before the ASU football game. Made reservations with open table as we weren't sure how busy it would be. Game was at seven...we arrived at 4:45. No problem getting in. Started filling up fast as time progressed. Food was great. Service was fine, but the server was not very attentive. Nothing extreme, just not there with refills of drinks as fast as my wife would like. The server was friendly, courteous, got the order right, etc., so don't want this comment to carry more weight than it should. Atmosphere is nice depending upon what you like. Perfect before game atmosphere, with the exception of no TV's to keep up with the day's games. But since this isn't a sports bar, you shouldn't expect sports amenities. Food was really good. The only negative I can offer, is we tried the strawberry cobbler, and didn't care too much for it. I don't know, I just don't think strawberries are meant to be hot! Would have been much better with traditional fruit. Some may love it though. All in all a good experience and we will definitely be going back soon....either as part of a football weekend, or maybe just because!
I have always loved Z'Tejas - My daughter, Alex, and I used to go every Sunday after her religious school classes. Now that she is a graduate student at NAU, she doesn't get down here very much, but Saturday night we went to see Wicked at Grady Gammage and couldn't resist meeting her at Z'Tejas for dinner. Of course our old favorites we still on the menu as well as some new tasty treats. This visit was also an opportunity to introduce Z'Tejas to Alex's Aunt Chris who recently moved to Arizona. She loved it too!
Thanks again for the memories and the great food! Pam Cohen
My husband and I tried Z'Tejas Tempe before attending Wicked at the ASU Gammage. The waitress was willing to make my salad exactly the way my diet needed it, but it came with the spiced walnuts that should have been left off. She offered to bring another, but I had already poured my dressing on it, so we picked them out and it was delicious. My husband's meal came out cold, but they took it back and fixed it and the manager came and told us they would take it off the bill.
Overall, the food and the service was excellent and we will definitely be going back next time we go to a play.
I have been pleasantly surprised both times I went to a Z'tejas by the quality of the food which was far better than one would think you would find at this type of restaurant. the tasts were exceptional and for the price it is a tremendous bargain.
Ambiance was casual and comfortable and the staff very accommodating
I had never eaten at any of the Z'Tejas properties, but I will definitely be back. The margarita I had was one of the best I've had at a restaurant. We started with the happy hour appetizer , Tejas Trio, which was great. For my entrée I had the Green Chile Barbacoa Enchiladas, which were delicious. Even the rice, which is usually the worst part of a Mexican restaurant, was spicy and good. Overall, it was a delicious experience.
I made reservations for Mother's Day and was excited to introduce my in-laws to the restaurant. I've been to Z'Tejas many times and love the food and the service. We were seated on time and the waiter was very nice.
We noticed something wasn't right when we still had our menus in hand after 45 minutes. Normally, you receive cornbread right after you place your order. That took about 30 minutes. Then another half hour to receive appetizers. (Shrimp Tostada Bites are wonderful!) Finally, our lunches arrived. We noticed other tables were experiencing the same problem, so we figured something unusual was happening. The manager finally came to our table and apologized for the delay. He explained there was a problem in the kitchen. (someone didn't show up and orders were snowballing.) I totally understand problems like this. Unfortunately, my elderly companions were not so understanding. (A Chambord margarita or two would have calmed them down and everything would have been just fine!)
The Mother's Day offer was to be a free dessert for the Moms and a photo with the family. By the time we were finished with lunch - 3 hours later - my party just wanted to go home. The waiter was kind enough to offer us our Mom's Day desserts to go. Although he could not find the photographer to take our photos, he just took them with our smart phones and called it a day.
We will be back without the in-laws.
Our waiter was OK not exceptional but the kitchen took over an hour and a half to bring us our food.
I had the mushroom enchiladas and they were very spicy compared to the way the Ray Rd store makes them. I was so excited to take my mother there for mothers day. Nobody at our table had a great dish. We will never return to this location. Too Bad I was checking it out to host an ASU grad party there for 2016.
We arrived at 11:30 am for Sunday Mother's Day Brunch, we did not get someone to even acknowledge us for another 45 minutes at least, . When our order was taken it was at least another hour before our meal came and it was cold. I have eaten in this restaurant before in Scottsdale during Happy Hour, food was great hot and service was great there . We still had a nice day but I did see the manager come out and talk to all the other tables outside but never came over to us .
Our servers was attentive, but the food was not entirely hot. I ordered the chicken stack dish, with mashed potatoes and veggies. The chicken and sauce were both hot and delicious, but the mashed potatoes were not hot. I expect my food to be hot when it arrives, and warm until I finish eating. A dining partner did not care for her cocktail, and ordered something different, but the waitress did not address anything about why she was not drinking it, and just left it sit on the table. Another dining partner (the designated driver) was drinking coffee, which was not hot. Finally our server did microwave it, to heat it up. I feel our server should have addressed these issues--at least not charge for the coffee would have been a professional gesture.
The hosts were friendly and accommodated attentive to our requests upon arrival. The wait staff was less than ideal, however. Our food order was incorrect when delivered, but was eventually corrected. Condiment delivery was extremely slow and we felt our waiter could have been more attentive. Based on previous reviews we expected a better experience. It wasn't unpleasant, just somewhat disappointing.
We routinely went to ZTejas before going to Gammage because it was predictable. We show up at or before 5:00pm for a 6:30pm show. When we sat down, we informed our waitress that we needed to be out of the restaurant NLT 6:00pm for a show.
Then everything slowed down. Drinks took a long time, when she finally took our order, she came back 10 minutes later saying that she couldn't read her writing and asked again the order (which means she waited 10 minutes to even enter the order into the computer).
The food finally came at 10 minutes until 6:00 so we had to stuff the food in our faces to get out of there. We got to our seats less than a minute before the show started.
Since ZTejas is no longer predictable, I will go elsewhere for a pre-show dinner.
