Z'Tejas Gateway Ratings and Reviews
We've eaten at Z a bunch of times and the food is always excellent. Except this time.
My wife had a Sonoran Chicken Salad and it wasn't fresh, tasted like the fridge. I had a chicken fried ribeye that you could pound nails with.
We'll go back, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that this disaster was a one-off.
Not happy with drinks or meal. The drinks were expensive and were mostly mix. The millionaires martini was terrible. We sent our drinks back. The Mexican fajitas were cooked separately and combined in the presentation skillet. The evening was very disappointing. Our server did everything he could to make our drinks and dinner right but could not make up for the quality of the food.
Went for brunch on Valentines day and it was totally understaffed. Our waitress tried her best but everything took forever, from ordering to getting the food to getting the check. The time we spent waiting was very noticeable and affected our meal. We also had two people get pooped on by birds so be careful!
We used to love Z'Tejas. But the past few years have been rather disappointing. I had read in the newspaper that they had made some improvements, so we thought we would give it another try. First of all, the place was very busy and there was a lot of commotion. Our waiter seemed really hassled and took a while getting to us. When he did, he was apologetic, but it didn't help much. He took our drink order and dinner order at the same time. However, our soup came out before anything, then the drinks, then the chips and salsa, and immediately the entrees arrived. I don't know who was responsible for the bad timing, but it wasn't very enjoyable. We thought the soup and entrees were quite good, but the portions were rather small. In summary, we probably won't go back since there are other choices.
The food was very good and nicely met the desires of all six of us - 3 excellent salads, 1pasta dish and 2 burritos. The round table was good for group conversation but the outstanding part was our service. Our server came frequently enough to ask if we needed anything and brought a couple of well-timed rounds of drinks. And we didn't wait long for the house speciality cornbread and dinner.
We've been a customer of Z Tejas for many years, and typically enjoy it greatly (hence, we keep coming back on a regular basis). This time we found them lacking on multiple fronts. Slow service, poor seating, a waiter more concerned with wanting to explain that we might be charged for our cornbread than with actually getting it for us, and food quality overall was not up to normal standards. We hope this is an anomaly, and not the future trend, or we will be moving on from what has traditionally been a favorite. Hope for better next time!
We enjoyed our dinner. They were short staffed, so the service was below par. We had to go to the hostess numerous times for service. She was very pleasant, and always found someone to help us. We were celebrating a friend's birthday, so it wasn't as nice as it could have been. This is not typical for this location, so we'd go back again.
We had a large group and booked at the last minute. The service was a bit slow but the top shelf margaritas were great to start. Pork nachoes were to die for. The table side guacamole was not traditional and very dry. The chips and salsa were good and plentiful. Entrees were amazing and well worth the wait. We had the Barbacoa enchiladas, chicken enchilada among them. This was a great fun experience with great food. I would highly recommend.
Came for National Tequila Day and made reservations because on Cinco de Mayo it was a mad house. Expected the same but was actually just busy. Too bad the server was taking tables on the patio as well as our section. Couldn't get salsa and chip refills and was barely around. $1.99 tacos were good but there was a limit of 4??? We also enjoyed other menu items such as the grilled chicken quesadilla and a entrée salad. I know this isn't the norm but was asked to review this experience. We will be back, hopefully.
Food was amazing...but it took a very long time for it to come out. We were on the second round of cocktails and still no food. Also we ordered the side table guacamole as an appetizer but it also didn't come out until our main course was served. Needless to say food was delicious but they need to do something about the service.
We arrived in Scottsdale lasted afternoon and took the concierge's suggestion to eat here. Food was okay, restaurant itself makes a nice impression. The manager does a good job training his waitstaff as they are very friendly and attentive. The cornbread is outstanding!
Our server was really just so clueless--I had to ask the hostesses to send someone over to our table twice, as we sat and waited for at least 15 minute before anyone even greeted us at our table. And it was Easter. Once our serve arrived. I told him it was my father's 76th birthday, assuming he'd get the hit and bring a little something with a candle at the conclusion of our Easter brunch. Nope. He was nice but just oblivious to his role as server in a restaurant. Luckily the food is great (although the temperature of it could have been hotter). And who doesn't love the Bloody Mary bar?! Yum. I have been going to Z'Tejas for unique southwestern cuisine for at least 15 years now. Too band our server couldn't handle service on Easter brunch, which also happened to be my father's birthday. It wasn't very special for him. My 5-year-old loved the bunny and the candy/photo--excellent!
We had a nice dinner with two other couples last night at Z'Tejas. It was a busy Saturday night in Scottsdale and fortunately I had made reservations. We were warmly greeted at the door and shown to our table which was waiting for us. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and reviewed the specials and answered questions. He got our drink order right away and brought everyone water and warm corn bread served in cast iron skillets. We got the grilled shrimp tostadas for an appetizer which were nice sized shrimp served on a crispy chip with guacamole. My husband had the seafood enchiladas which he liked a lot and I had the grilled cilantro pesto-rubbed ruby trout which our waiter recommended and was delicious., served with grilled veggies and rice. The food was excellent, service was friendly and efficient and we had a great time.
Our drinks were delivered after incorrect deliveries, all after the appetizers. Both main courses were incorrect. My companions dinner was finally delivered 20 minutes after mine. What a shame. Poor, uniformed service. Food was overcooked and wrong.
Z'Tejas was a fun dependable fast casual restaurant. They need to properly train the service people.
