ZTejas Arboretum is located in Austin, Texas and serves up a huge menu of Mexican favorites. This establishment offers brunch, lunch and dinner. There is also a happy hour menu and a full cocktail menu for those who enjoy a drink with their meal. ZTejas Arboretum also offers catering for parties or gatherings. There are also vegetarian options for those who prefer not to eat meat.
One of the best items on the menu at ZTejas Arboretum is the five-cheese macaroni and achiote chicken. You get a combination of jack, cheddar, parmesan, Romano and bleu cheese with a crispy bacon gratin on top. For dessert, many try the skillet cobbler, which is made with seasonal fruit and comes a la mode.
The food was very good as were the drinks however the music was too loud for normal conversation at a booth that sat eight. The table was wobbly & too tall for an average height adult plus the air temperature of this space was very warm. Very sad as we've always enjoyed eating at Z Tejas in the past.
Service was very poor. We were forgotten. Drinks were weak and lacked flavor. Kitchen forgot to add essential sauce to fish fish and one serving was completely dried out I have had s much better experience before so I will probably try again.
We had our own large booth for our birthday gathering. Thank goodness, because the place is very popular for happy hour and early diners and the noise level is high. Chocolate pecan pie with candles came as the birthday cake. Wow! Great trout and veggies.
Our waitress was outstanding!!! I haven't had that level of service in a very long time!
Waitress treated really well.
Inside was wayyyyyy to noisie. The atmosphere needs some work as well. The serving staff was good and so was our meal.
Good food, so so service but 20 men seated behind us were far too loud!!
We had a great lunch but it was a business lunch and it was a little loud for a casual conversation. I know it was just a result of where we were seated because it was right in the center of the restaurant. I've been plenty of times and not had this problem.
We dine at this Z-Tejas location a lot. This review is specific to our Mother's Day dining experience. The food, as always was outstanding. They are super consistent. Typically the service is very good to outstanding, depending on who your server is and how busy they are. Mother's Day was an exception to that service level. As a former restaurant manager of 10 years, it's pretty easy for me to see where the breakdown is service was. We had a new server. And by new, I mean new to serving tables...ever. Every step of service was slow and he would "go to check on things" a lot and disappear. Our next encounter would be with a food runner, who we would have to ask for LOTS of things (water, the fruit and muffins that were supposed to come with the entrees, the wine that was ordered 20 minutes ago that we would have asked our server for, but we hadn't seen him in 20 minutes, etc.) I don't blame the server, this is a management issue. They should have never let him go on the floor solo. He just wasn't ready yet. We were there in the late afternoon (after the brunch rush), so there was no excuse for the lag in service. Even as disappointing were all of the other servers standing around talking who could clearly see that our server was in the weeds with his two tables and never lifted a finger to see what we (or he) needed. Overall, we still love Z-Tejas and if not for the usual great service and always outstanding food, we would have been upset. That being said, I hope management does a better job of training their new staff members, does a better job of circling the floor to see how their guests are doing, and does a better job of instilling a team mentality to their staff.
always such good food and service. Was there on Mother's Day so very busy and super loud. Hard to hear each other. Also a rainy muggy day and they kept the doors open - which made us sticky and muggy as well at our table near the front. Love the food but experience was not the greatest on this last visit.
Really disappointed. We had a reservation and checked in when we arrived and they said they couldn't find us even though we were standing right by the hostess desk. And once they finally seated us, our food was even worse. Cold, tasteless and didn't even look like enchiladas! We won't be going back.
Brought my out of town family there for lunch on a Sunday. Place was half-full and I had a reservation. Took 5+ minutes to be seated. Our server gave us what turned out to be a very prophetic warning that she had just had three full tables in her area seated and would do her best.
Orders taken quickly so far so good. Took at least 30 minutes to receive our food. Food was OK but not all that great -- I like Chuy's much better. A manager finally came by and comped a round of drinks but the whole staff (other than her) seemed disinterested in doing their jobs.
The service was the worst I've ever had a Z-Tejas. The place was also very empty for a Thursday, made me wonder if the two facts were related. Sad in a way, but it was not a great experience.
Hostess was a bit spacey ! Didn't register my visit with opentable
Thanks for honoring my request to sit outside. Such a relaxing and beautiful view for brunch. Your Bloody Mary bar is one of our fave parts of Z Tejas brunch. Can't wait for next time.
After receiving confirmation from open table about our reservations at ZTejas I decided to call the reataurant to confirm our large party. Despite the open table confirmation and number the hostess said they did not have our reservation on their books at all. I have her my information again and she took it down saying many times open table did not come through...what a disappointment. Thankful that I took the initiative to call the reataurant. I am liable not to use open table until changes are made.
Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the young woman who was our waitress. But she was exceptionally good and waited on us in the outdoor area around 8 PM.
Hosted a business lunch for 3. We were able to hold a conversation without distractions. Great view front patio and Street Tacos were amazing!
When we have friends in town we almost always take them to ZTejas! The Arboretum location has a wonderful view on the patio- awesome location to see the Hill Country! We love that the menu has a great variety and the tableside guacamole is always a MUST! We usually choose this for our birthday dinners, as well!
Party of 4 on a Sunday afternoon at 1:00. Food was good, really good, as always. Self service bloody mary bar had a nice variety of garnishing, but the 3 of us who partook didn't enjoy either bloody mary mix (2 available).
The service was exceptionally slow and we didn't get everything we asked for. We weren't charged for what we didn't get so it all worked out.
I've been here numerous times and will go back, I hope this experience in service was an anomaly.
We usually enjoy our experiences at Z'Tejas, but this last visit was disappointing. Queso came out lukewarm, slow to refill drinks and extremely slow food service. Hoping that this was a unique experience and this service pattern will not continue in the future!
We enjoy bringing out-of-towners to places like this that represent how wonderful and diverse our culinary experiences are!! Wonderful lunch with our company leadership!!
Poor drink selection as compared to other places, like BJs.
I didn't pick this restaurant to eat. I think Austin has a lot more to offer as far as Tex-Mex is concerned. The drinks weren't the best, limited wine list and the chips a bit stale. Salsa isn't too bad, but again there is better in Austin. To be honest I think Z'Tejas is over rated.
The service was excellent. Our server, Chaib was attentive and knowledgeable. The food was high quality and nice portions. This is a great place with a great view.
was seated in area on patio that had no protection from weather. after waiting additional time
temp was 56 degrees then had to wait again. Host stuff was not experience, maybe for a Chiles?? Not Z tejas. Steak had no flavor.
This restaurant used to be really great and I used to take friends to the Arboretum location when they visited from out of town. However, over the last several months, the restaurant has really lost it's appeal. They used to serve complimentary corn bread, but that is no longer the case. Instead, they had complimentary chips and salsa, but so does every other Mexican restaurant. Nothing unique there. The appetizer we ordered for the table (quesadillas) was so small that everyone could only have one piece which amounted to about 3 small bites. The rest of our meals were ok - nothing outstanding. This location used to be so popular! It would be jam-packed on the weekends and sometimes during the week. This Saturday, we tried to make a reservation for 7:00, but there wasn't availability until 7:15. We grabbed that time, thinking the place would be really crowded, but when we arrived, there were open tables everywhere and no one was standing in the bar area. That tells it all. It's not just me.
We are always pleased with the food and service at Z'Tejas. We love the appetizers (dumplings yum) and feel that we are getting great quality food for a fair price. Happy hour is a great bargain!
We enjoyed a lovely Valentine's dinner. The food was delicious and the setting was very romantic.
Terrible service. We had to ask our waiter several times for chips/water. Other times he would check on us from halfway across the room and would leave before we were finished expressing how we were doing. He did not enter my order correctly. He seemed very impatient with us, and the place was not even that busy. He was not very polite either, several times we said thank you to him and received no response.
Four of us were there for Valentine's and had an early reservation (6:15). It was busy but not packed and the food was good. It isn't that romantic but is predictable and enjoyable when not crowded (loud). Patio is very nice as well.
Our waitress was terrible. She screwed up several of our orders. Not the best experience at all.
We made a online reservation, table was ready when we got there no wait!! It was busy on Valentine day and was impressed that we were seated so fast! Food and service were great. Will go back.
This was Saturday night before Valentines Day Sunday so we expected a full house but there were many empty tables. That should have been a red flag.
Have been here many times in the past and had always had great service and pretty good food. We had drinks and dinner.
The drinks had either very little alcohol at all or were very watered down. We each had 2 drinks and we both commented on how weak they were.
My entre was ok, not great. Was warm not hot when served. He ordered a filet and they brought a ribeye which was replaced when we told the waitress. The filet had almost no flavor. The steaks we had at Rosdhouse the night before were way better.
They used to serve a great cornbread complimentary appetizer which you have to ask for now for $3. They supposedly donate those proceeds to charity.
We told the manager and his response was that he has been hearing similar complaints from other people. He offered free desert or additional drinks which we turned down. None of the food was comped which surprised us.
Our latest visit to Ztejas was very disappointing. We have been to Ztejas several times and always found to food to be quite good. This visit the food can best be described as bland. My wife and daughter ordered the salmon and I ordered another fish dish. The dishes had identical toppings and except the color of the fish, they were identical. This visit was especially disappointing because it was a birthday celebration. We should have known something was wrong because there were many empty tables on a Saturday night. I have never seen that before on previous visits.
We visited this restaurant for a special Valentine's Day occasion, and we weren't disappointed. We were welcomed and quickly escorted to a table near a window overlooking a beautiful outdoor view. Menus provided offered a special evening 3-course dinner at a bargain price or the regular dinner menu. An additional drink menu was also available. The salmon plate was great and complimented the first salad dish, a tasty strawberry, pecan salad with feta cheese. The only change I'd make was the overwhelming dessert that needed some editing. Large doesn't make it better, so a smarter option would be a more delicate final course. Beyond that, a really good dining occasion.
I love the grilled Ruby Trout. It's hard to order anything else. Sitting outside on a nice day is special, too.
My husband and I went to Z Tejas Arboretium with my daughter and her husband on a early evening on a Saturday. We greeted and after all party members arrived were taken to a table with 3 chairs and we were obviously 4 adults. The hostess was oblivious and immediately walked away -- we took it upon ourselves to take a chair from another table. The wait staff was friendly, but the a chip refill had to be requested, instead of taking notice and refilling, and had to ask about the cornbread because nothing was mentioned. The Paloma I ordered didn't have much flavor and seemed to be watered down -- couldn't even taste the citrus that was part of the cocktail. My daughter and I ordered the Baja fish tacos, and with all those flavorful condiments we were totally surprised at how bland and tasteless the dishes were. My husband had the chicken-fried steak and he said his dish was the same--very bland and without flavor. We were disappointed with this experience and I doubt we will bother to come back.
Food was good. There was a very bad smell at the back of the restaurant....this needs to be addressed
