Zin Bistro Americana Ratings and Reviews
Zin was recommended to me by a friend when I inquired about a good Agoura spot to meet up with an out of town friend. We were seated on the patio and were given privacy, with very good service. Our orders were so different, but each was good. I would send anyone their way!
The Zin Bistro is a nice combination of open areas and private tables--so you can be in the middle of the bar scene or a quiet observer totally focused on your dining companion, as you wish. The menu starters are nicely plated, generously portioned--burrata and the (3) cheese plate, for examples. (The honey served with the (3) cheeses is its own delightful detail). Salads and salmon were on expectation--very nice. The ratio of busing, water service and server attention--very adequate; no waiting or wondering if you have been forgotten. Price point is reasonable for the nice area. Small detail, but fun: there are no speed bumps in the parking area!
Going to Zin Bistro Americana was a last-minute decision, but a good one. While an exact match to the type of table we requested was not granted (given the late booking, probably not noticed until we appeared), efforts were made for a "best we can do at he moment" table, which was sufficient. Great efforts of all of the staff at every service juncture, given the rush of holiday luncheons simultaneously taking place all around us.
The food was well-presented (though I'm never pleased when a food runner arrives and asks "who ordered what," though this is common these days), and the portions were reasonably small -- which is quite refreshing. The Lobster salad was a disappointment (a bit more lobster was expected), but not at all bad. The seared Ahi salad was "just the right amount," and I was wise to ask for the sauce/drizzle to be served on the side (it was overpowering, at a minimum).
VERY professional staff, "nice" food, and a beautiful surrounding. We know what to expect when going to this restaurant, and what to expect, primarily, is an excellent staff, adequate food, and (on a beautiful day) beautiful surroundings.
Glad we went, and looking forward to going again!
We had a $200 Groupopn for four and did not use it all. Great onion rings for appitizer.
Lobster salad was outstanding (entree) also Caprese salad was a great appitizer. The sand dabs were great and I have had the sea bass before which was outstanding. Really fair prices for the quality of food. Highly recommended for a nice waterfront evening.
Been going to Zin for a number of years. Still thinks it's a good place for lunch, but dinner was disappointing. The Sheperds Pie was not done in a typical fashion, just had a big chunk of pastry thrown on the top like a giant piece of bread. I had the Lobster Ravioli and asked for just a small amount of sauce. It came swimming in sauce. Either the waitress wasn't paying attention or the cook didn't read her note.
All in all was not the best experience.
We were surprised when we arrived that we would be eating a buffet meal. And then when we got the bill we were even more surprised that the food we had eaten was $55 per person!!!!!! There was no way on God's great green Earth that any of the three of us couldn't have eaten that much food, especially when the most expensive item on the "menu" was prime rib, or at least I think it was prime rib. The only seafood they had was salmon drowning in some nasty sauce! The only good parts of the night were the nice scenic view, the live jazz music (which ended shortly after we arrived), the house wine and apple martini. When I pay that price for a buffet, there should be, at a minimum, shrimp, crab claws or legs, and more than two choices of meat.
Great overall service. Thanksgiving Brunch food was average at best. Turkey and Roast were very good, but all of the sides and desert were nothing special (Mimi's Cafe boxed take hone meal was far superior). Might be better for regular lunch or dinner. Nice location on lake.
We cane to Zin’s To celebrate my mom’s birthday. She loves to be at Zin’s on Fridays with the live music which we really enjoyed. Our server was not up to par. We rarely saw him. Our reservation was at 7:00 and he didn’t bother to take our dinner order until 8:30. Our tableside ahi tuna (nice touch being tableside) was made the exact opposite of the way we ordered it. When they came back to remake it, the food server was disgruntled and unfriendly. The food was delicious and they brought my mom a delicious bday dessert that we enjoyed. We purchased a $200 Groupon to use for dinner and our bill came to $175 so I ordered a dinner to go to use up the certificate. We waited and waited for it and the waiter never brought it. I went to the bar to find IT had been waiting there for me. The best part was on the way out the waiter caught me at the door to make sure we left a cash tip on the table. Super classless. That left a really bad taste in all of our mouths. So overall great ambiance and tasty food but bad service by the two servers that waited on us.
Place was lovely being on the lake. Staff very nice and attentive. Food very good as well.
Only complaint would be that they did not course it out very well at all. We ordered an app to just throw in and start and said we'd wait to order properly; waitress was very amenable.
We then ordered a soup and salad to start and to mains. The mains came when we were still only half way through the starters. Waitress was so nice I felt bad to send the mains back to be coursed out properly. So, we just ate it all one after the after which left us stuffed and was the only dampner on the meal experience.
Made reservation through OPEN TABLE, for 2 at 1;30pm lunch.
We arrive ON TIME and the place has 2-3 tables with people eating.
Stood in the entry for a Host / Hostess......Nothing.
Continued to stand there, then finally after 2-3 minutes we saw across the dining area 2 servers, (they both looked in our direction) Neither one said anything to us.
We both kind of stood there looking at each other thinking WTF just happened?
Again, we continued standing there for about another minute or so and then decided to get the hell out of this crappy restaurant (ZIN BISTRO AMERICANA) and go next door to another restaurant.

Where we were greeted, seated and had an awesome lunch.
Go here for drinks and the view of the lake. Quite serene. You may feel like you are on vacation.
Blackened fish served dripping in oil. Not edible. Sent back to the kitchen. Per server's suggestion requested the fish to be grilled only.
Fish returned .....dripping in oil/butter? Unable to eat, again.
Tuna appetizer served in cloying sweet sauce-not expected and not tasty.
Have been dining here since it opened. The food used to be extraordinary. Seems like management doesn't care about the food it now serves.
