Zest - Water Beach Club Hotel Ratings and Reviews
Zest was a great find. It is a bit off the beaten path, as the San Juan Water and Beach Club is in a nook in Isla Verde on the beach. We got there after sunset, but I suspect that sunset would be rather pretty, right on the water.
The food was well executed and had unique takes on Latin/PR traditional foods for many of the things on the menu, but also had some completely special treats. Everything everyone ordered was delicious and well executed.
Even if you are not a truffle fan, I highly recommend the truffle popcorn soup in particular. Also, the drink list has some really unique cocktails. Lastly, the wine list is very reasonably priced while having good options too. This is definitely a restaurant I'd recommend if someone found themselves in the area.
The restaurant atmosphere is terrific and the service was great. The appetizers and desserts were good but the main courses were very disappointing. The presentation of the food was excellent but unfortunately the taste just was not there. Overall it was bland and tasteless. The better main courses were the salmon and chicken. The not so good were the short ribs and steak. The value for the dollar is not very good. We were disappointed as we had eaten here a number of times before they changed the menu and loved it. The new menu does not show off the previous talent of the restaurant.
Great place and very chic boutique hotel in front of the beach. Quiet and pleasant. Atmosphere is modern yet cozy. Wait staff very attentive. Food was creative and good. 2 of 4 in our group found it a bit salty. Went up to the rooftop bar Mist after for a drink. Also very nice and great views.
A little too uneven for their price point. Some things were well prepared and presented. Others were not done well. A steak was unevenly cooked. A lava cake was overlooked to the point that there was little lava left.
It seems it could be great. Maybe since it was Christmas Eve the usual chef was not there.
Isla Verde resident. Overall, a very good experience. Food was excellent - get the Seabass. Only negative was the price/value. I've had equally delicious, if not better, food in my area at a much more economical price point. You're paying a premium to dine in a hotel.
This is my 4th time at the restaurant, perhaps the last. I believe this is the only time where the chef Correa did not directly prepare our food, it showed. The crispy viandas with the fish were tough and dry, way overcooked, the sauce was rather stale and flavorless. The Brussel sprouts with the short rib were simply burnt to the point of being inedible...I was very dissapointed. Additionally, the pork belly in the Lechon appetizer were not done correctly, they tasted almost raw. They were not pan seared but rather crowded in the same pan and steamed together. Previously I had gotten this dish and was crispy, with the right amount of hoisin, this time it was utterly terrible. Two people in our party got sick overnight
The service, like always was spotless, great attention, our server was simply delightful.
This was my favorite restaurant by far...not any longer. I heard they are changing the menu, however I might be more interested if they change the sue chef or whoever was cooking that day...
Just like I read in some reviews, the arroz con pollo is one of the best things I have eaten in a long time. Delicious!
Didn't care for the popcorn soup (looked too heavy and creamy) but too many good things to try on the menu.
Service was very good. Will definitely go back again.
It was my birthday and we got together 10 friends. We had a good time, and the food was really good. We were hoping the restaurant close a little bit later so we felt a little pressure from the waiters for us to finish, even though they didn't say anything.
The service was average. She was nice but wasn't that attentive with the drinks. We would've consumed a lot more bottles of Rose if she passed more by the table.
I really loved the environment, the food, the vibes, the place as a whole. I would come back for special occasions or girls night.
I dined here with friends while vacationing in Puerto Rico. After reading excellent reviews of Zest, we booked a reservation. Everything was perfect. Our server was friendly and took time to explain the menu, telling us his favorite dishes. The drinks we ordered were outstanding, colorful and served in unique glassware, which I appreciate. The popcorn soup is amazing, trust me, you must order this. The entrees were perfectly cooked. Our only complaint was the couple sitting next to us that fought the entire meal, but that's not the restaurants fault! I'll recommend this place to all my friends who visit San Juan.
The restaurant was recommended to us by the concierge at our hotel as a good spot for vegetarian options. Walking distance from the Ritz Carlton, we had a great first meal and, when we asked about some of the local items included in our dishes, the chef/owner came out of the kitchen to tell us all about them and to suggest other items on the menu (he even went so far as to bring a sampler of a dish he though-correctly-we might like). Despite limited nights in San Juan, we returned for a second visit and had an equally spectacular meal. The food is inventive, fun and fantastic tasting. The staff, including the waiter/waitresses as well as the owner/chef is warm, friendly and helpful. What an unexpected surprise and a wonderful treat. Highly recommended.
This is the second time we've been to Zest, and both times it was fabulous. We started with drinks at Mist, the rooftop bar. This is a must do, so leave time, if at all possible. The view over the ocean is great, the atmosphere is relaxing and the happy hour 2 for 1 drinks are well worth the stop alone. We then went downstairs for dinner. We had the fantastic popcorn soup, which is something of a misnomer. While it is topped with popcorn for some texture, the soup is a truffle butter emulsion prepared hot as a soup with a cold dollop of the same floating on top of the soup. It is the second most delicious thing I've eaten in a while. The first most delicious thing I've eaten in recent memory has to go to the sea bass main course, with local root vegetables and a sauce made from those same root vegetables. They also add a eggplant foam, which adds a nice vegetable aroma. We just loved everything we tried here, but were a little too full to have a desert. The service was attentive and the meal was very nicely paced. The atmosphere is cozy/private. It's perfect for a date, birthday or special occasion, or just for going out with some very good friends.
I would tell everyone to avoid this place, so I could keep it to myself, but I so want them to stay in business, and they deserve all the acolades they get, so begrudgingly I say, if you want a heavenly meal from one of the most creative chefs in San Juan, come to Zest!!
Excellent food and atmosphere. The popcorn truffle soup was so delicious, rich, and interesting. The grilled eggplant was a solid vegetarian dish, and the fish we had - I forgot which one but a white fish, was prepared well. The best was the coconut terra cotta dessert topped with pineapple sorbet with rum soaked raisins... Divine!
Hotel restaurants – or restaurants in a hotel – folks either love or hate them. Well here is one you are sure to love. It is a moderately sized, upscale venue that is reminiscent of the Miami vibe with a NYC attention to quality in décor, atmosphere, and fare. The food is well prepared and beautifully / creatively presented. We began with Tuna Tartare with an avocado sorbet, soy-ginger vinaigrette, & plantain gremolata and Lamb Ossobuco Empanadas sofrito, maduros, & chimichurri yogurt. This was followed by Olive Oil Halibut with a guiso of potatoes, seasonal beans, spinach and ham, & a tapenade. My companion had the Pan-Fried Red Snapper with plantain mofongo, lemongrass-chorizo broth, & ajili mojili. The food was absolutely delicious. For vegetarians there are several well done and creative choices for both appetizers and mains. It is one of the few Caribbean restaurants where the martinis are done exceptionally well. Zest is worth a visit or two or more.
This hotel has a rooftop bar called "mist" it was great drinks and appetizers. I definitely recommend it! Great ambiance and vibe too! We went down to the restaurant "zest" and it's menu lacked options. The food tasted good but was a little too eccentric. The chicken and yellow rice version was a good choice but the croquettes that were supposed to taste like chicken fricasse tasted good but didn't remind me of any fricasse We've ever tasted.
We had just spent week on a cruise out of Puerto Rico where we met a gentleman that recommended this restaurant and this hotel. Wanting to explore more than what we had seen of the island we did make arrangements to eat here and it was wonderful.
We went to the rooftop bar for a drink before dinner to enjoy the sunset and were delighted with the view and the service - we had an appetizer that was a delectable octopus dish! Just be careful, it is a pool bar and the cushion I sat on was wet!
Dinner, the service and the experience overall was wonderful. We will be back and may consider staying here as well next trip!
I have stayed in the hotel five times since it opened, and dined at least once each time. what was originally fresh seems not-so-much anymore, including the presentation, the menu, the décor (including fabrics, blacklights and projectors) and certainly the service (which was mediocre or worse across four meals over along weekend). To be perfectly clear, the waitstaff was slow and inattentive, not unpleasant. I recommend only if the restaurant is a fresh option for you.
Given the number of awards and rave reviews, we were expecting a lovely dining experience.
What we got was extremely tortured dishes, which were actually unpleasant to taste. In short, yuck!
But what was most annoying in such a pretentious place was the level of the service. For a server to continually address a man and a woman forty years his senior as "you guys" demonstrates that the training is quite at odds with the chef's aspirations.
Dial back the food and dial up the staff, you guys.
We have been staying near the Waterbeach Hotel for years and never knew about its restaurants. What a great surprise to find a world-class chef right in our backyard. Can't recommend it highly enough - - all aspects were perfect. And food is something you'll always remember.
Ate here while on vacation with friends. The menu was interesting and overall the execution was pretty solid. The service was attentive and overall we had a really nice time. One comment was that it took a little while to get our food, and the staff seemed reluctant to give us more than one piece of bread while we waited. It took quite an effort to get them to come back with another round while we waited. Overall enjoyed the meal though and would consider going back if we vacation there again.
Delectable inventive menu, fresh food, lovely fusion of flavors. Try the tuna tartare with avocado sorbet, the scallop ceviche, clams in garlic sauce and the sea bass- all super fresh, all amazing. Fantastic service, great cocktail menu! Comped valet! Place doesn't disappoint. We will be back!
Love this place for breakfast so I had high hopes for dinner but was seriously disappointed. We dined on New Year's Eve and there was a pre-fixed menu. The food was disappointing, not much flavor, the portions were TINY, and for two people it was almost $300. The snapper was very dry and overcooked and the gnocchi was drowning in sauce. For that price I want to and should be wowed, I shouldn't leave hungry and have to order a pizza.
