Everything was A-Mazing! Our Server was incredible, food was divine - only the slightest of constructive criticism was our server seemed to disappear for long periods of time in between courses. She might have just been giving us uninterrupted discussion time, this was a combo business meal / friends catching up - so since everything was amazing, I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt. LOVED IT! and will go back.
Excellent Asian fusion, big choice of small plates, very reasonable prices, nice drink menu, comfortable and easy for conversation. Menu is creative and practical, divided so you can navigate salads, grilled food, maki rolls, etc. We like to do a course of salad and grilled food, then a course of maki. Perfect place to have a leisurely meal with drinks and catch up with friends.
I arrived about 20 minutes before the kitchen closed, and I was still served well and greeted warmly. My server was very informed about the menu and sake ‘tasting’ options. It was lovely! I ordered the polished rice sake trio.
I ordered the gyoza, lamb, and pork small plates. The presentation was beautiful.
My only regret was I did not come earlier so I could experience kuidaore!
Had a 6:30pm reservation. Wasn't crowed at all and service was quick but then it got busier and the service finished as well as the ability of the kitchen to produce...took over an hour for sushi. The duck and steak skewers were medium rare which is not my liking. I loved the creativity and the harmony of the dishes in the past...loved the pineapple sushi. Sadly the pineapple sushi is no longer an option and on this adventure the harmony and the creativity wasn't as impressive. The staff has all been relieved and new people in including management and I felt the quality has dimished. I come from California to eat at this place while visiting the last two occasions, but I don't think i will on the next visit.
The food was good. The waiter did not write down our order, and therefore forgot to bring us one of the dishes. We did not bother to say anything about it. The prices are a little high for what you get. There are no large plates, just small plates. I am accustomed to getting a "small hot sake" in a carafe, but here they call a small hot sake a "glass," and a "carafe" costs extra. There are only western style desserts, nothing Japanese (e.g. beignets instead of red bean cake). The beignets were delicious; but it's an odd way to end your Japanese meal. It's a sleek, stylish atmosphere. I did not like the music - too modern and thumping. It should be more soothing. Still it was an enjoyable evening, and we were not rushed through our dinner.
The food was delicious. Because they serve the food tapas style, we ended up ordering a lot of dishes. It was a little pricey, but good food and atmosphere for a special occasion. We heard the rooftop deck was nice, but there were 15 people waiting at the elevator to go up, so we bypassed the deck and took a walk instead.
One of the best Asian inspired spots I've been to in a while. The plates were creative, coupling ingredients that one would not expect. There were combinations of flavors that I could not describe, which is always a delight. The wait staff was very attentive and had a depth of knowledge that spoke to their enthusiasm for the cuisine. We enjoyed approximately ten plates, a few from each section of the expansive menu. Presentation was exquisite, all were well prepared, and arrived at just at the proper time. The Sake selection was broad and superb. I will make a point to revisit Zentan when downtown.
Four of us went for restaurant week and got the prix fixe menu, which came with three small plates each. Most selections were absurdly small; many did not taste good; some were of generally low quality (some of the chicken was gristly). Additionally, service was slow. It took over an hour from ordering for our last dish (a sushi roll) to show up. Drink refills had to be requested. All in all, a very expensive way to waste time on mediocre food.
Zenton, had great tasting food and nice sushi but totally overpriced for the tiny portions. The staff was nice overall, however this restaurant was non- accommodating in every way. First of all they seated us in a table that was directly in the sun and close to other tables when the restaurant was very open and when we asked to move it was a bigger deal than it needed to be. Second, I moved around the side of the table to be closer to my boyfriend and they made sure to tell me that that could be a problem if another table came. What they should have said is, "can we move you to a place that is more accommodating?"
Also, we had just missed the HH menu by about 15 min. The menu looked to have some great things on it. We even asked if we could order those items at full price since we had missed the HH window and they said no. If you can make something in a restaurant it should not be dictated by time. If diners want to eat something on your menu, make it for them! I am sure the ingredients were still in the restaurant.
They only served Sake in a tiny glass (about the size of a large shot) that cost about 11 bucks, which is way overpriced.
I eat out all the time and sadly, this was by far the most uncomfortable, overpriced dinning experience I have had in DC. We were scared to ask for anything for fear of getting shot down since it had happened too many times within the first 10 mins of us being in the restaurant.
This place has all the ingredients to be great but they need to relax a bit, lower the prices or beef up the portions for the dishes they are currently serving. The angst they created totally overshadowed the great food and the All-Star Chef.
