Very sad that this restaurant is closing. It offers some of the best sushi and Asian food in the city.
I am so sorry to see this restaurant close on the 30th. I love Zentan and I know that my friends and I will miss it.
Food was fine - not as great as I remembered. Service was pretty terrible for an expensive restaurant. Service was slow, they brought me the wrong order, and we sat waiting for our check to be picked up for about 15 minutes - and it was not busy.
Food was good ; more of a tapas style but we all ordered about 8 options altogether. Ambiance was nice , drinks were okay, all in all I would come back and try the rooftop if weather permits.
My first Japanese cuisine experience. Great experience and best food i ate whilst being in Washington. Staff gave superbe suggestions! Top restaurant !

Had a fantastic time with my large party! We did the tasting menu and it did not disappoint. The chef even accommodated to bring out more vegetarian options for the one vegetarian. Great Food! Friendly staff!
The kuidaore experience is awesome. Unlimited good food and chef is very flexible. We loved the sushi and they kept bringing us different varieties of sushi. Definitely need to speak up or else they will bring the dessert course and try to shove you out. Don’t blame them as it doesn’t make sense to keep bringing food if people are full. If you aren’t full, then feel free to keep requesting what you like. It’s part of the experience !

It’s not a really Japanese restaurant. I’m Japanese and the restaurant is more Chinese tast. If you want a really Japanese cuisine I don’t recommend this place.

The servers kept hassling us if we want to leave the bar for our table. And then tried to upsell us to the most expensive pieces of sushi... the value was in the non-individual pieces of sushi i.e. in the plates.
The food was excellent! The service was VERY slow. Also, I took a friend out for his birthday, but the waiter brought the check without offering a dessert menu. And then he took a long time to get our dessert order and to have it brought out.
We got there at 11:45, and were the only ones there. By 12:30, there were a reasonable number of active tables, but it wasn’t at all crowded. There was no apparent explanation for the slow service.
But, overall, the experience was good.

My girlfriend and I loved our dinner date at Zentan last Saturday night! Absolutely delicious food and relaxing atmosphere. Our server Caden was attentive and courteous. He recommended the bacon-wrapped scallops off the grill - which was an excellent suggestion. They were delicious! We also ordered a few sushi rolls and the gyoza. Top-notch, beautiful and fresh - exceeded our high expectations. They did have a little delay in getting our sushi to our table, but our server offered another appetizer - on them - for the trouble, which we appreciated. It seemed like a busy night, so I don't think the delay would be typical. Neither of us drink, but they have a selection of creative "mock-tails" which my girlfriend loved. Don't worry, they've got a full bar, sake, beer and wine for those among us who partake! Bottom line, I'll go back any time I'm in town and recommend Zentan to all DC locals and visitors. Five stars all the way. Thank you for a perfect date.

Thought everything was “okay.” The only thing that stood out was the time it took to order cocktails, get cocktails, order wine, and receive wine. Would have had more if wait staff paid closer attention. Should be a more “shareable” small plate appetizers and a few simpler sushi rolls. Again, we would have ordered more if there was something we could share that was the right size.
Food was fantastic, but the wait was confusingly long. We went in for lunch before heading to the airport. The restaurant was not at capacity (I would estimate 60%), but we waited over 40 minutes for lunch. The server did not return to the table often to check on us, but when he did indicate our lunch would come soon, it didn’t. When we finally received our food, we asked for the bill and promptly provided payment, but again had to hunt down the server to pay so we could leave. Again, incredible food, but a clear sense of urgency when it comes to timeliness.
The food was amazing and the portions were great. Very unique flavors that I'd look forward to having again. Unfortunately, we had a very poor service and I don't think I'd want to go back. They seemed understaffed and we were seemingly forgotten for 20-30 minutes after we got our drinks, then for another 20-30 minutes for the second round of food (its a small-plates sushi place).
TLDR: Great food, bad service.
Wonderful food, the seafood noodles particularly were great. I always spend too much at these small food places but unlike many, this one is worth it. Not a place to be seen, but a place to have a great dinner.

Came here for a Birthday dinner on Saturday and it was not too busy. The food was delicious, and absolutely worth the price. We were going to order the tasting menu option, but decided against it and ordered off the menu instead. The grill items and sushi rolls were delicious, and when the bill came, the food we ordered for a two person meal ended up costing the same as the tasting menu would have cost for one person. I’m sure its a great option - you would just have to be absolutely starving for it to be worth it.
Only disappointment was the service - despite the restaurant being empty for the second half of our meal, our waiter came to our table a total of 3 times, and we did not get to order until 25 minutes after we had sat down.

Used to be great. Wasn’t this time. Hopefully just an “off” early evening.
Food was horrible. It has gotten really bad. The sushi menu is very short. All the fish was old and fishy. This is a basic hotel restaurant now. Service was horrible as well, and very slow.
No doubt about it, this is a truly outstanding dining experience. I'm a Brit who spends a lot of time in DC, and food-wise I found this to be right at the top of what this city has to offer. If you like Japanese food this is certainly worth trying out
My date and I decided to come here based on the reviews. When we got there we decided to do the all-you-can-eat array of different menu items. It was 4 or 5 groups of food and dessert at the end. We had an amazing time sampling our way through the menu! Definitely recommend.
Surprised to see 20% service charge added for a small party of 3. Food had either too much sauce or too little. Kuidaore was not up to expectation. Too much carb and not enough fish.
Need better service
Disappointed by the service at this venue, which cast a shadow over everything else. For instance, I had to wait for over fifteen minutes for new chopsticks while I watch two servers (not so subtly) fight over who would get to serve a table of two young women. I can't blame them for this, but just wished they were skilled enough to flirt AND provide decent service.
Uneven quality of food. Sashimi was superb. Makisushi, not so much. Robata strong, but sauces a bit too overpowering. Attentive service, but because it was empty, I felt a bit rushed. Start to finish in 70 min.
Dined here with my parents for Restaurant week while they were visiting. My dad can be a very picky eater and he really enjoyed himself, bravo Zentan!
The food was all very good - we did the restaurant week menu in which we got to choose 6 small dishes between the two of us. We also got miso soup and garlic edamame, and finished with 2 different desserts. It was just the right amount of food and the flavors were all different and distinct. The seabass and scallop dumpling was my favorite - the sauce it was in was creamy but extremely light. The server was very helpful in drink choices, helping us find drinks that suited our tastes. It was a little chilly but otherwise, the atmosphere was good. It was nice to see there were smaller tables on the outer edge of the room for some quieter dining, and larger high top tables for groups. There were 3 sections of the restaurant so it was split up well and wasn't too loud.
Went to Zentans for restaurant week since we loved them when we went there last time. Both of us are vegan but they were able to easily accommodate us. The smoked eggplant is absolutely delicious, just as I remembered it. This last time though we left feeling as we got much less food for the time before, and were still feeling hungry.
We each did the restaurant week menu and shared 8 small plates and dessert. We both did sake flights which are super fun and great to progress through the different sakes with the different dishes.
