Zax Restaurant & Bar Ratings and Reviews
Management and service was terrific. This was a business meeting and we asked for a quiet spot and they put us in a back corner that worked out well. The restaurant has great ambiance. The food was presented well on the plate and was very tasty. Everyone enjoyed the food and cleaned their plates. We had appetizers, entrees and desert. The servers were attentive and filled drink glasses. Wait was not long. Would recommend for a special occasion or business meeting. Cost was not out of line for the food that was served, but would be a little pricey for a typical family dinner.
Our meal was very good and we often return for our favorite sesame encrusted tuna. Our server was a little ho-hum in his attitude and lack of friendliness although he did check on us regularly. This is a favorite, centrally located meeting place for casual family or friend meals. The food is consistently prepared with quality ingredients.
We've usually had decent food at Zach, but last Saturday was really disappointing. We ordered a bottle of wine, two appetizers, and two main dishes. The restaurant was crowded, but that was no excuse for the slow service. That is,after all, what they're supposed to manage! The wine finally came, and we enjoyed it, but the food didn't come and didn't come. When it finally did, it was our main dishes. The server offered to bring the missing appetizers, but we said no. My wife's main course--basically a crab salad--was pretty good. Mine--scallops with polenta and veggies--was terrible. Sauce all over everything, and the scallops tough as shoe-leather. The ambience is, well, that of a sports bar, but that's what it is, so no reason to complain. But the food and service have been better. Won't go there again any time soon.
We enjoy Zax; however, when I've gone to the trouble to make a reservation for an early dinner, only about 15% filled dining area, I expect to get a better table. We were initially taken to a 2-top in a rather crowded 2-top area, almost on top of the people where they initially were going to seat us. I requested we not be seated at a 2-top -- the table tops are too small for our order of 2 pizzas and an appetizer. The server seemed exremelty flumoxed, and took us to a regular table at the entrance of the restaurant. There were many other empty tables, which would have been better. Hardly worth making a reservation. When we left at about 6:40, the dining area was still relatively empty.
Zax was very flexible. We arrived early and they moved us up. Luckily the restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived. The seared Sea Scallops were not seared but they were very good and huge!! My husband expected a whole piece of lamb but it was sliced. It was very good anyway. We asked for our dessert to go but they said it couldn't be packaged to go because it was creme brulee. We were way too full but ate it there at the restaurant. I wouldn't have cared if it looked a mess in a to go box..........I really wanted it to go........but was told no..........and it was our anniversary. Oh well. Food was good. We will go again.
We had such a great experience. Our server was extremely sweet, I believe his name was Layton? Hopefully, I didn't butcher that. We did our girls get together brunch there, and all the ladies enjoyed the experience from the food to the service.
Will definitely be coming back ! Thank you for accommodating our group.
Zax could be so much better if they improved a few small things: hot coffee, hot potatoes - restaurant never seems to be be bustling so there isn't a reason to have cold coffee and potatoes. Owners need to come up with a unique offering otherwise it's just another decent restaurant with good food and good prices but nothing much else to keep coming back as regulars.
We love Zax. We have never had a meal here that is less than delicious. This past Friday, we went before the theatre and had another great experience. We adore Cheryl, the bartender. She is knowledgable about the beer and wine selection, and she's fast and friendly. This time, we ate the mussels with saffron appetizer (omg...mouth watering), the duck and the seafood stew. All great! We had a new server this time who said he had been there about a month (he was a little slow and couldn't answer our questions), but he was kind, and hopefully with time he will be up to the usual service standards at Zax. Oh, and their brunch and happy hour are great too. Can't recommend Zax enough!
In the heart of Austin, close to downtown but not stuck on a street without parking! Aside from the food, that's probably one of the best things about Zax is they have parking. Lots of choices, each one harder than the next upon which to decide, and all really tasty. They have a good wine list and a great beer selection. Our waiter was attentive without being obsequious, very friendly and great service with good recommends. I like that you can reserve a table. When thinking of a good restaurant to meet friends, Zax is always a winner!
Calamari was tender & delicious but something was a bit salty, either in the sauce or chef dusted some salt after frying the calamari. Duck was really good but the burger was slightly dry. Waiter Scott was very attentive & gave us what we requested very fast but at the end he kind of disappeared for awhile when we were ready for a to go box.
Enjoyed a lovely dinner with our grandchildren at Zax before taking them to see La La Land in Concert with the Austin Symphony at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. Nice menu options, including a pre-theatre menu with scallops that my husband and I both ordered. One minor note: Although I ordered the spinach to replace the mixed vegetables, I received the vegetables, but it really didn't affect our very lovely evening.
Jerk salmon pecan salad and calamari were excellent. I would not recommend this restaurant for kids during dinner (not sure about lunch). It is a wonderful place that I would enjoy with my husband. I took my daughters (6 and 10) and they were the only children. Not a big deal since they are older and it was a quiet Monday night. No official kids menu. We had a wonderful time.
Normally I do not write reviews. This was a mother's day brunch with my family. We were a party of 6 and our service was very poor. We were seating promptly at our reservation time, but the food took more than 40 min to come out. Our waitstaff was also very slow to check on us. We waited another 20-30 min for our check after we were done with our dessert. All 3 tables around us were seated after us, yet received their food before us and left way before we did. The manager or supervisor or owner stopped by at the 3 tables next to us, but did not come by to check on us or how we were doing. I even smiled at him while taking my daughter to wash her hands and I received a very cold response as he looked away. I was very disappointed at such customer service and with my experience at Zax's.
On a positive note. The shrimp was very good and the ginger creme brulee was wonderful.
Delicious food! I was with a good of friends for a girl's night and everyone enjoyed their entrees. We ordered everything from duck, pork tenderloin, to mahi mahi. It was all great! My friends really loved the vegetable medley too! This is a really good place!
I was looking for some where that was centrally located, had a variety of food types and prices and wasn't too expensive. Zax was somewhere I had never been but seemed to fit the requirements. The food was excellent, the service was competent, polite and well organized. I will definitely go here again.
This was my second visit - from San Antonio - attending the Opera at the Long Center. Zax is convenient to Long and after my first, worthy of a second visit. However, my second experience was not as good.
I had a reservation- so getting a table was not a problem. Once seated, it took at least 15 minutes before any waitstaff acknowledged our existence. I had to go to receiving area and relay that no one has bothered to welcome us. After a few more minutes, a waiter came up and apologized-okay I guess.
Our food was mediocre- my poached eggs had a solid yoke. The French Toast was cool. The Chardonnay was the only bright spot.
Will think about returning...
Zax is very convenient for a before opera or symphony dinner. The service is admirable and the food good and plentiful. The cocktails are inventive--I recommend East of Eden--and we usually have a bottle of wine, setting the mood for a lovely music experience. The outdoor area is very nice in good weather.
It was freezing inside due to the AC. That's why we had requested to sit outside. The request was declined with the reason of all tables being reserved. During the whole time we had dinner (inside) there were two tables, and sometimes more, free in the outside area. What's up with that?
The waiter was very nice, the food excellent.
Loved the food
Asked for a quiet table... I didn't see that was available.
The server was aware of our needs but didn't interrupt us unnecessarily.
This was not a fast in and out experience.
We had an hour and 45 minutes before the show and we used all but 10 minutes of that enjoying the food.
Did I say we loved the food ??!!!
