Best food we had in Austin.
Nice place, Good food and the wait staff was friendly.
Hubby and I dined here before a concert at the Long Center. We had reservations and were seated promptly. We had the crab cake appetizer, which was very good. Both of us had the fish special, which was trout with a crab bacon topping served on rice pilaf. It was good, but rather underwhelming. Had the ginger creme brûlée for desert, and it was outstanding. We would give them another try if we are back in the area.
Very good Benedicts - we had the regular, crab and veggie. The has was also very good. Try the cheese grits - they did not need doctoring. Also, EXCELLENT Bloody Mary. We didn't bother with the do it yourself version - trusted the bartender & were very happy.
Loved the options on the menu . It was late and we wanted something healthy so we both went for hearty salads. Generous serving of crab meat on my salad. My partner had two spicy tequila craft cocktails, perfectly blended. The menu has diversity and there is something for everyone.
Sitting indoors was not an option as it is very noisy inside (Saturday night). Fortunately for us, it was a mild February evening, so we asked to be moved to the patio.
This is a great place to go before or after a show at the Long Center, giving us another option in that area.
I would even consider reserving the patio space for a large family/friend celebration after graduation, etc. Could seat at least 50 with additional tables/chairs.
great service, good food, strong drinks. Perfect for pre symphony or ballet dinner
We’ve enjoyed Zax since they opened! Food is always delicious and drinks are refreshing.
Zax was one of my "go to" business lunch spots as I can always find parking. I never considered it a dinner spot but after eating a great dinner meal I will add it to my short list of dinner dining spots. I forgot about the patio.
We had four different entrees. Each of us was pleased. I had a Zax salad with grilled shrimp; my husband a salad with Ahi Tuna; our friends had the salmon steak and a turkey burger (I think). Everyone expressed satisfaction. The portions were generous. We'd asked to be seated in a quiet area if possible, and that request was honored. Our server was attentive without being overly so. Free parking! All in all, we quite enjoyed it!
This restaurant was great for a last minute date night. The restaurant was very Low key ambiance. The food was amazing. Great place for a relaxing dinner.
5 min walk from the Hyatt Regency. Attentive service - everyone says hello and follows-up. Simple menu with several healthy items. Lots of local beers. Good stop for a business traveler or group of friends.
From the ambience, the bartender and wait staff, to the food, Everything was outstanding.
Live this place good parking downtown delicious food & excellent service best bartenders in town
I love to go to ZAX before a performance at the Long Center. The food is predictably good and an hour is ample time to order, get served and eat.
Lasagna was excellent, as was the Zax house salad. I had the Black Bean burger on whole wheat, it came with pick de Gallo and was zesty
We went there for NY Eve and felt very rushed although it didn't seem any busier than usual. When sitting at the bar before we went to our table, the bar maid was zooming around in a very frenetic way and while at the table our waiter seemed way too hurried and freaked out. Don't know what was going on, and understand NY eve is a busy time, but this was a very unrelaxing dinner for my family.
Every time we eat here we are reminded how wonderful it is. One of us had mussels, one had the pork sandwich and one had the fresh tuna salad. All the choices were excellent. They have a very cute patio also.
With all the new and trendy restaurants popping up in Austin, I keep returning to Zax. It's predictably pretty perfect each visit.
It was a tasty meal before going to the ballet. The food and location were very good. It was great that even though we were later arriving than expected, we were promptly seated.
Love the food and folks at Zax's. Great to have close to home and a true Austin original.
It was a very romantic setting. Was a little louder than I expected. Not too bad but did make it a little challenging to chat. Maybe would be better for a group of friends rather than an close, personal intimate setting.
The place is so popular I think it's outgrown the building. And the parking lot. *Had some thoughts about how they could improve the bathrooms too.
I love Zax! The food is wonderful. Also, it's not noisy, so you can enjoy talking with friends.
Before performances at the Long Center, we've always enjoyed dinner at Zax. The food is excellent, prepared perfectly, and the service is superb. Friday evening was no exception. There was a wedding party right next to us, but our service never suffered - we were well cared for.
We very much enjoyed our burgers. We don't eat burgers often so we want to make sure we have a good one when we do splurge. Zac did not disappoint!
In a word, Zax was sublime. We had first-class service by Lindsey B. and our food was wonderful. I had the special for the evening, a grilled shrimp and scallop dish on couscous. Perfect. All I can say about my friend's dish, the veal picatta, was that it looked wonderful because she wouldn't look away long enough for me to steal a bite. It was a close #2 for my choice.
I wish Zax great success but I sure don't want it to lose its ambience or great good in the meantime.
Delightful meal, our waiter was attentive but not hovering - a great balance of anticipating our needs when ready to order or need more beverages.
Zack is a fun establishment, offering good food and service. Well worth a visit.
Management and service was terrific. This was a business meeting and we asked for a quiet spot and they put us in a back corner that worked out well. The restaurant has great ambiance. The food was presented well on the plate and was very tasty. Everyone enjoyed the food and cleaned their plates. We had appetizers, entrees and desert. The servers were attentive and filled drink glasses. Wait was not long. Would recommend for a special occasion or business meeting. Cost was not out of line for the food that was served, but would be a little pricey for a typical family dinner.
Our meal was very good and we often return for our favorite sesame encrusted tuna. Our server was a little ho-hum in his attitude and lack of friendliness although he did check on us regularly. This is a favorite, centrally located meeting place for casual family or friend meals. The food is consistently prepared with quality ingredients.
We've usually had decent food at Zach, but last Saturday was really disappointing. We ordered a bottle of wine, two appetizers, and two main dishes. The restaurant was crowded, but that was no excuse for the slow service. That is,after all, what they're supposed to manage! The wine finally came, and we enjoyed it, but the food didn't come and didn't come. When it finally did, it was our main dishes. The server offered to bring the missing appetizers, but we said no. My wife's main course--basically a crab salad--was pretty good. Mine--scallops with polenta and veggies--was terrible. Sauce all over everything, and the scallops tough as shoe-leather. The ambience is, well, that of a sports bar, but that's what it is, so no reason to complain. But the food and service have been better. Won't go there again any time soon.
Zax's is consistent as a restaurant. The food and the ambiance is good as is the service. Diverse menu, good bar, and generally a quiet atmosphere good for conversation.
Zax's is a great place to grab a pre-Long Center show dinner. Extremely convenient and they have special Long Center price fix that is quite a deal! ... and it's gotten better since the last time I was there!
Good food and a very friendly staff. Always enjoy eating there.
The food here is awesome. Always come here with family and love it before going to the Long Center
We have friends who love this restaurant. However, I found the food to be only mediocre. The evening was nice because we were with friends from out of town and it was not crowded or too loud so we were able to sit and visit for some time.
We enjoy Zax; however, when I've gone to the trouble to make a reservation for an early dinner, only about 15% filled dining area, I expect to get a better table. We were initially taken to a 2-top in a rather crowded 2-top area, almost on top of the people where they initially were going to seat us. I requested we not be seated at a 2-top -- the table tops are too small for our order of 2 pizzas and an appetizer. The server seemed exremelty flumoxed, and took us to a regular table at the entrance of the restaurant. There were many other empty tables, which would have been better. Hardly worth making a reservation. When we left at about 6:40, the dining area was still relatively empty.
Zax was very flexible. We arrived early and they moved us up. Luckily the restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived. The seared Sea Scallops were not seared but they were very good and huge!! My husband expected a whole piece of lamb but it was sliced. It was very good anyway. We asked for our dessert to go but they said it couldn't be packaged to go because it was creme brulee. We were way too full but ate it there at the restaurant. I wouldn't have cared if it looked a mess in a to go box..........I really wanted it to go........but was told no..........and it was our anniversary. Oh well. Food was good. We will go again.
Good food, terrific service, perfect for pre ballet dining
We had such a great experience. Our server was extremely sweet, I believe his name was Layton? Hopefully, I didn't butcher that. We did our girls get together brunch there, and all the ladies enjoyed the experience from the food to the service.
Will definitely be coming back ! Thank you for accommodating our group.
One thing about pre-Austin Symphony dining at Zax's is that the place is SLAMMED...then clears out almost completely. They work hard to keep things flowing, but.
