The restaurant was on the smaller side as well as the menu. Very expensive for Portland standards. The food came out delish but the service was absolutely horrible. Three of us put our drink orders in and instead of going back to the bar and entering in the orders our waitress proceeded to take care of other tables. It took about 15 minutes for the first drinks to come out and then another 10 before the last drink came (it was a glass of wine, nothing intricate) then the waitress failed to make another appearance until another 15 minutes had passed.
Get it together.
How was Zapoteca? I wish I could tell you about the dining experience. But despite accepting my reservation on Open Table, and without any warning or other communication with me, the restaurant was simply closed when we showed up at the appointed time. Which was immediately after my daughter's graduation ceremony. With a party of seven. Including three senior citizens, one of whom could barely walk the block and a half from the ceremony to the restaurant. This made me look super competent to my guests, who reluctantly wobbled up the street to a pub while I went to fetch the car and find another reservation. At the last minute, for seven people, on graduation day. Thanks for nothing!
Great food and drinks, professional staff, a bit noisy. Unless you can get a parking spot on the street (the sports bar next door gets most of those) you pay to park in the nearby lot. Fun to sit at the bar and watch the creative mixologists make their drinks.
Underwhelmed. First we arrived (at 5:30) for our reservation and were told that if we wanted a booth we needed to be done by 7 because they had a reservation coming - um, hello, we have a reservation and are here now. Customer service? Then it took a while to get drinks even with only 5 other tables. The drinks were good though. One entree was good (enchiladas), the other bland (carnitas). It wasn't a bad experience just not worth going back to.
Despite being able to make a reservation the day of our lunch and their website having a sample lunch menu, we arrived at the restaurant to learn that they were closed and had stopped serving lunch. Very disappointed and very embarrassing for me as I had arranged the outing for my mother who lives out of the country. I honestly expected to be contacted by the restaurant to apologize for the mixup, but was further disappointed by them when I heard nothing.
We were a group of six and could hear each other fine the whole night. Our table was ready for our reservation. The service was solid, the drinks were delicious and interesting and the food was spot on. Someone said we had a different/more limited menu bc it was Memorial Day weekend but I didn't confirm that. There were still plenty of options and everyone enjoyed their meals.
I was disappointed in the amount of time it took for our meal to come out. The chips were too salty and the main course was too bland. I am a huge Mexican place and I would not recommend dining here. Also, the plates are very small. We ended up getting food after we had dinner.
We went to Zapoteca on Cinco de Mayo expecting to get a delicious meal (as we have in the past). We were sorely disappointed. The menu was very limited because the restaurant was anticipating large crowds. That wasn't the problem, however. The problem was that our meals were bland, and tasted like they had been pre-prepared and left under a warming light for hours (which they may well have been). We kept apologizing to our guests, who were first-timers, and tried to explain that this was an aberration. But it was hard to convince them to give it another shot, when the food was so subpar. Zapoteca owes its fans better than that. Bottom line? Stay away from this place on busy nights!
A bit pricey but overall good food. Waitstaff was a little overwhelmed when we went and told us the kitchen was behind. We waited a while for food and drink refills but it didn't bother us since the waitress gave us a heads up. The salsas and enchilada were my favorite
Food and drink were amazing as always however every time I go I feel like I have a search light focused on me. The lighting is far to bright and the placement of it is just awful. really hard to enjoy your time there. Also they really need to invest in some acoustical baffling asap! A buzzing restaurant is lovely but when you need to yell across the table to your friends so you can hear each other..(mind you I am 29) that strikes me as a tad to loud for a restaurant.
Terrible experience. We ordered food, including what proved to be watery guacamole, and entrees that never came. Our waitress initially would not make eye contact, then admitted that the kitchen was short staffed. She apologized, but she seemed to take it in stride, as if the occurrence was not uncommon.
I will never go back.
I ate here with my parents for my birthday and we had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and slightly fancier than your average Mexican place which is what we were going for. I felt it was reasonably priced for what you got - it definitely would be possible to spend a lot of money here if you ordered a lot of drinks and appetizers but with just a round of drinks, guac, and a main course it wasn't too bad and that is definitely enough food. I loved their margarita menu, they had several creative kinds that I had never seen before. I ordered the blood orange one which was tangy and not too sweet. The service was wonderful - prompt, friendly, and attentive - and they gave me a complimentary slice of cake when they heard it was my birthday (but didn't sing or anything - which I thought was good!). Overall it was a really nice experience and I'd love to go back again.
I am a resident of Portland and I am really impressed with the quality of this restaurant. Food, service, menu, setting and (especially) drinks were all top-notch. I brought my parents here for easter with my parter. We all loved what we ordered and really enjoyed trying all the handcrafted margaritas. Food was exceptional and presentation was very nice. The Sunday late brunch menu optons were a treat as well as the standard menu items always available. Staff were very friendly and attentive/informative. I was afraid, since there weren't many people there at that hour, that the staff would be overbearing but it absolutely wasn't true. The pricing is an amazing value for what you get and I will definitely be back.
Unfortunately, we celebrated our event (I won the NCAA pool) on bachelorette party night - combined with a 2nd all-girl party, noise level was OUCH. But we had a fabulous waitperson (who totally understood about the noise and did speak to the manager who did speak to the tables... but it was party night after all!) and the food, as expected, was outstanding. Other times we have given all 4-5 stars. So next time we will skip Saturday night! Recommend the mussels (in any form - I hope they bring back oven smoked), scallops, and the guacamole!
