Father came to visit
While service was amicable and dishes were flavorful, value for money was atrocious and space design left a lot to be desired. Sushi rolls were deplorably small (albeit regularly fresh), and my boyfriend and I left hungry, with a $200+ bill burning a hole in our stomachs (2 appetizers, 2 rolls, 4 drinks total). We rolled straight to another restaurant thereafter. Being from NYC and dining out regularly, I'm not against paying for value, but this restaurant was a huge mistake for a special occasion. If you're here for a business lunch, go hard. But if you want a meaningful, filling meal for your money, go anywhere else. Maybe Zama had its good reviews years ago when it first opened, but it's game over for this restaurant in a modern city unless they make some legitimate upgrades to foodie deliverables.
Sushi is good, but the portions are very small. Nigiri slices very small. Tuna roll had scraped or diced tuna inside, not solid pieces. The staff is very friendly.
Zama is always good for lunch and dinner. We continue to take friends there to introduce them to the great food.
best sushi ive had in the region. also, beer and wine selection is great.
its also a good opportunity to learn about different things/cuisine. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and educating.
Very good meal. Enjoyed the appetizers and desserts more than the sushi and sashimi but all in all it was a pleasant meal. The ginger sake was delicious.
It was very good! Brought our second bottle of saki after dinner, service staff wasn’t in tune with each other
Waiter was not as friendly as he should be for what I consider high end restaurant. It felt like we were bothering him with every question and every time he answered he made us feel like he was doing us a favor. For 2 people and a 4 year old the bill was $178 and I left a $20 tip (more than he deserved for the service) so as we were leaving and right inform of everyone and being sarcastic he yelled “thank you very much I really appreciate that”. Food looked much better than it tasted. Food was average at best. If I’m paying almost $80/person I would expect better service and actually better experience than what I had. Won’t be going back again.
Always great Bento Box lunch
I took my wife to Zama for her birthday. The meal started out innocently enough. Our server was engaging and we ordered some sake. Dinner went quickly downhill from there. First, the short rib special appetizer, which I believe was $15 or so, came out cold. it was served on a bed of what amounted to some not very crisp rice noodles that could have come out of a can. They returned the rib and managed to serve another that came out at least warm. We ordered some sashimi and a sushi roll and a few oysters. The oysters were good, but of course Zama didn't "cook" those. The portions of fish were embarrassingly small and though one is forewarned in the menu that the fish is priced per piece, I have never seen, in all my years of eating Japanese food, such small pieces or such a lackluster presentation. We waited too long, they never brought the second 2 oysters we ordered and the bill was $160, even after they took something off to try and compensate for what had to be the worst restaurant meal I have eaten in years. Don't go!
Excellent, authentic food. A bit pricy though for the small portions.
Delicious and fresh sushi, creative drink menu and lovely atmosphere
This was my second time at Zama and it was just as good as I remembered! I can’t wait to come back again!
Zama is always wonderful. Great sushi, great service. Definitely try the scallops and the shrimp tempura.
Great quality sushi! Very creative dishes and presentation!
Consistently good sushi in a cozy atmosphere. Noise level fine for conversation. Good bar and solid service.
Zama is always reliably great. I chose to take a new friend that was visiting the city for the first time and they were absolutely impressed with the entire experience. The food, as always, is wonderful, and our server, Peter, was outstanding. I never get tired of the beauty of the atmosphere and the dishes.
Zama's food was great. I enjoyed the sushi and appetizers including our tofu lettuce wrap. There were enough choices for vegetarians. The only small criticism is the tight space, which made even getting into the chair rather difficult.
Always enjoyable. Probably best Japanese restaurant in Philadelphia
Excellent food and atmosphere!
Honestly wasn't as good as everyone said it would be. The food is creative in theory, but doesn't taste like anything special in reality.
I have lunch here every week and enjoy their Bento Box. Servers are very friendly and professional and food usually arrives in a expedited manner. Decor is beautiful and reservations are honored promptly
The meal was very good for the most part. Our only complaint was that one of the male servers/food runners was absolutely rude and dismissive. It almost ruined the entire experience.
Good sush, very nice atmosphere, fast service. Loved it
We went for Restaurant week and had a good meal (Bento Box) for lunch last week. Service was good and good value for the amount of food served.
Good food in a nice atmosphere. The staff was excellent.
We went for a birthday !! Have gone before we love it there !! Everything we have ordered it delicious and my husband always does the tasting !!
Unique, creative food and drink choices. Terrific service and good vibe.
I came here with my best friend last night for a 9pm reservation. We were seated promptly and the service was impeccable. I personally suggest the edamame, sashimi combination appetizer, entrée salmon and a cute little banana roll for dessert. Will definitely be being my boyfriend here for date night.
Tried Zama for dinner during Center City Restaurant Week and enjoyed it very much. As a matter of fact, I tried to get reservations again the next day but nothing was available until after 9:30pm. I recommended Zama to my son and his friends and they enjoyed it as well. Thanks for a wonderful dining experience.
Great food and excellent service
The fish is fresh!
Chefs Tasting Menu was OUT OF THIS WORLD. all staff were very professional, informative and accommodating ❤️
We went for restaurant week on Sunday and the entire experience was positive. The staff was attentive, food was excellent, and value was great! Def a good place for another visit.
Sushi good. Not life changing. Service ok
This was my second visit
It’s been several years
The food was innovative and tasty
We had a service dog and were treat hospitably
Looking forward to return
Zama is one of the best Sushi restaurants in downtown Philadelphia. The service is great. The food is tasty and fresh and it is convenient to both my office and home. I took my daughter and son-in-law out to dinner last night. Couldn't decide what we wanted and I suggested Zama, my go to restaurant when I have no idea what I really want for dinner. My daughter suggested the sizzle roll and the Kennett Square. Both were delicious. The Brussel sprouts have always been one of my favorites as well as their sushi. The selection last night was excellent. While they do not go overboard with presentation as other Japanese restaurants I frequent on the West Coast, they more than make up for it with great food. I highly recommend Zama. It is definitely on a par with Shino Sushi in San Diego were my Japanese friends from Panasonic have taken me.
Great food great service. Had sushi and drinks. Fabulous. Would go back.
