The sushi was of poor quality - dry rice, meh fish - and our $17 sea bass appetizer consisted of three cubes of fish plus pickled vegetables.

Brought my wife here for the first time for our valentine’s date and we loved it. The food was great, the noise level was tolerable and the place was beautiful. One thing that stopped me from giving this place 5 stars is their service, the servers were great but we had to order everything altogether before they start preparing the food. Never had that in any restaurant but they were busy so i’ll give them another visit and hopefully it’s different then.

We have dined at Zama many times before and always have a good experience. The kitchen on our last visit was agonizingly slow. Our server kept apologizing for the delays and even comp’d us a dish. I don’t know if this was because it was Valentine’s Day and the restaurant was busy or if the kitchen was short staffed.

Food, decor and location were all good. Service was attentive, but we were a little confused by the various types of sushi available and the waitress was not all that helpful in that regard. Would go back again.

Great location, clean, cute space. Service not personal at all. Didn’t offer to explain what the fish were that were on the sampler platter - just got dropped off on the table without the waiter pausing - was a drive by on his way to other tables. Dishes came out in random order so one of us didn’t have any food while the other had two dishes for a while. Quality of the sashimi was average. Eggplant chicken lettuce wraps were bland. Best thing was the wine!

We had a great culinary experience our first time visiting Zama. We were in town for a concert and saw positive reviews and availability and decided to try it, we don’t regret it at all! Staff were friendly and helpful. We shared several marvelous appetizers and delicious “bites” including the tempura vegetables with shrimp, sea bass, scallops, and chicken. The desserts were the perfect size to share and end our meal. We will return and recommend to others!

Service was great. We enjoyed the mixed drinks as well as the miso soup so we were excited for the other dishes. We also enjoyed the cod, under small bites. While the short rib dish was tasty and well cooked we think the noodles it was served over were pretty much rancid. We did not notice until we ate a plain one. We ordered the black belt sushi and the fish was fine, nothing special.

Went out with my girlfriend for date night, I got the Strip Steak, the steak was cooked perfectly. The highlight was the sauce, best I have ever had! Would definitely be back for the steak again!

Thumbs up across the board. We had the Tasting menu and it was consistantly delicious. If I had to give it a knock I'd say that there wasn't enough variation. Although I can't say I'd delete any course in the tasting menu for something else they were vaguely repetitive. I'll go back for sure. You can talk there which is not a given at most resturants,

AMAZING

We usually get sushi which is outstanding
I ordered non sushi items this time and was simply blown away. The brussel sprouts are the best I ordered another order they were that good. Waiter was super cool. Picked out dessert for us and that was incredible. Such a great night.

Ate here for Restaurant Week so was super busy. Food was great as we ordered different things so we could try as much as possible. Had the edamame, salad, pork dumplings (my least favorite thing), black cod and three rolls. All were great! All four desserts were also really good (luckily they were bite sized). Our server Peter really knew the menu and answered all our questions in spite of being super busy.
We will be back!

We wanted to try Zama and we thought Restaurant Week would be a good opportunity to do that. We were disappointed. The sushi and maki rolls were very ordinary. There was a $5 up charge to get “better” fish which we choose not to do- this really annoyed us...it’s as if the fish they served you was sub par. There was nothing that we tried that would encourage us to go back- there are better and more reasonably priced Japanese restaurants, like Crazy Sushi, in the same neighborhood. Maybe the regular menu is very special, but they didn’t include anything from that on the Restaurant Week menu. Not a good introduction to encourage new diners.

The dishes were too salty, starting from the miso soup to the black cod. The pork dumplings should have been served with some form of acid, a nice Japanese vinegar or a some fusion citrus sauce to cut through the oiliness instead of the soy sauce and chili oil. Other than our amazingly nice waiter Tierney, who was such a sweetheart, the others were rude. They couldn't wait to end their shift for home. One of them, served us the wrong order and still insisted she was right, and hastily put it down on our table. It was only later when Tierney saw and she took it away because she remembered our order. Overall Tierney was great and she deserves employee of the month!!!

This review is tempered by the fair service (at best) of our waitress. My wife's entree was served 15-20 minutes after the entree that was shared between my daughter and me. The waitress's reasoning for the delay was that the restaurant has two different kitchens that prepare meals for the back room where we were seated, which provided no reasonable explanation for the different serving times whatsoever. In addition, our waitress never apologized for this delay nor did she ever follow up to see if everything was OK with our meals.

Zama has gained a good following and reputation in Philly and for good reason. The innovative takes on raw fish---sauced with variations on yuzu are deliciously different. However, on our first visit, we were unimpressed by the nigiri sushi---the good quality rice undercooked and dressed with too much wasabi which overwhelmed the fish flavors.
There are enough interesting dishes on the menu to tempt us to revisit.

Only came here because of restaurant week and wanted to try something new. For the amount you pay for, you would expect at least decent sushi. The sushi rice was hard and stale. Portions are smaller than the average place in Center City. The tuna was clearly frozen and was a mushy texture. The fish cuts in general were of poor quality and tasted way too fishy/like freezer. To get your fish fix at a reasonable price, go to Fuji Mountain instead. If you want real sushi and don't mind splurging, head over to Royal Sushi and do their omakase. Never coming back here again.

I have to say, the first time I tried Zama two years ago, I didn’t like it. But now that I’ve been back a few times, it has easily redeemed itself and become a favorite. This is definitely a special occasion sushi place for us. While we will always love Kisso in Old City, Zama brings it’s own style and flare to very fresh fish! It’s expensive and in Center City so definitely less accessible. However, it’s worth the trip! The service is incredible, especially our most recent server (I can’t remember his name, but he had a “man bun” and many great suggestions). The fish is very fresh. And the creativity with their dishes is boundless! Make this your anniversary spot- it’s worth it!

We were very happy to find this restaurant. The food grade was just good as one of the best sushi restaurant in Japan. Salads were so creative and delicious. I fell in love with Philadelphia salad. Bravo! To the chef. Desserts were stunning. Can’t explain enough in words. Want to go back to Philly even only for Zama.

It was Great! We all (4 of us) ordered the $55 tasting menu. Everything was delicious, beautifully served and we loved the whole experience. The specialty drinks were terrific too.
I read some reviews that had me second guessing whether we should go here... I am sooo glad we decided to ignore those reviews!!! (I think some people complain just for the sake of complaining.)
I would definitely come back here, it was wonderful.

Ordered one of the tasting menu's and the food was outstanding in both presentation and flavor. Really wish there was some sushi in the tasting because other peoples we saw looked amazing. The dishes also took WAY to long to come out. We were there for almost 3 hours. The server was completely disinterested in being helpful or friendly from the very beginning. He never once mentioned how long everything was taking, even once we made it known we were trying to get done he still took his time.
It was also surprising that we were there for 3 hours in a small restaurant and the manager never once asked us how everything was going. Overall, food amazing, service terrible, ambiance was not memorable. I will definitely give it another shot for the sushi.

Our server was super friendly and knowledgeable. My wife and I visited on NYE and didn’t feel rushed at all. The servers guidance was a big part of the experience, helping us select wine and picking complimentary dishes, which allowed us to sample a wider variety of flavors. Everything was extremely fresh and of very high quality, down to the wasabi that was fresher and texturally more complex than most I’ve had. Even the soy sauce had a fresher taste to it.
