B'day dinner for six with mixed reviews on the food. 3 likes and 3 dislikes. The 2 appetisers we tried were tasty and the highlight of the meal. All agreed that the main portions were small and would have been nice to start with warm bread with some flavor and not the bland room temp bread that we got. Pasta portions were the size of side dishes at other restaurants. My wife selected the cornish hen ( 1 OF 3 MEAT DISHES ON THE MENU) and only 1/2 of the hen was served. We decided to skip the $ 4.00 coffee and and reasonable priced desert menu with no idea of portion size . We left and had desert elsewhere to celebrate the b'day. Place was empty the night we were there . One staff member did say thank you and goodnight when we left. We would not return.
Wonderful!!! This restaurant fulfilled everything that I wanted - professional but warm/friendly service, excellent Italian cuisine, an attractive but not stuffy decor, and good seating. Thank you!!!!
Zagara is a neighborhood gem in the heart of Chelsea where you always get quality food and your choice of excellent wines along with superb service. The homemade pasta and specials are always wonderful! We are always warmly greeted by the staff and owner. You feel like you’re on a mini vacation to Italy!!
the service was extremely slow even though we had an early dinner and the place was empty. The food was uninspiring.
Excellent service and the food was perfect for a business lunch.
The food was SO good. The arugula was so fresh it practically grew on the plate; the endive too. And the preparations were perfect - the eggplant couldn’t have been more tender and delicious; the sauces and dressings were delicious and just the right amounts; the basics - the prosciutto, the parmesan, the burrata - were absolutely delectable. Ambiance was zen-Italian and the service was gracious and spot-on. I feel like we found a gem.
We had a very enjoyable lunch. The food was good as was the service and we could sit and chat as long as we wanted
Monday, early is a good time to dine here. Conversation was easy add it was not noisy and crowded. Food was good and fresh. More fish options on the menu would be nice.
Well, I cannot say enough about this little gem we found in NYC. We were looking for a venue that would seat 12-15 people. It was very difficult finding a place in NYC, but we stumbled across Zagara! The food was amazing! The drinks were amazing! Nino, our waiter was absolutely the BEST and a lot of fun! We will definitely be going back and this may just be our reunion spot going forward! Lisa and Bruce!
This is a narrow restaurant facing busy 7th Avenue. The food—octopus and endive appetizer followed by perfectly grilled branzino for both of us, was excellent--and the interior is cozy, just a bit spartan. The Italian couple who own the restaurant are very gracious. Both were very helpful and attentive. Lucky those who live close enough to make this an everyday experience. Looking for someplace impressive? Elsewhere.
Hung out and shared wine with the owner, Guiseppe. Great guy and very hospitable. I recommend this place.
Had a reservation for dinner at 5:15 on Sunday, after a show at the Irish Rep. We were greeted and seated immediately. We shared the eggplant appetizer; it was perfectly prepared, one of the best ever outside of Roma. For mains we ordered the branzino, and the black linguini with mussels, clams, shrimp, etc. Both mains were perfectly prepared and served with appropriate timing. The branzino had been cleaned perfectly - not a single sliver of bone. The black linguini was perhaps the best I've ever had; authentic Italian (vs. Italian-American). We had a very nice bottle of Nebbiolo, fairly priced. The owner/server was very helpful; chatty but not bothersome and he sprung for the dessert. Overall, an excellent experience. We will be back!
Food was not good at all
Very nice Italian restaurant in Chelsea - good choice if you're going to Irish Rep Theater very close by.
The Tuscan spaghetti with pesto and potatoes look like a small portion at first glance, but it is loaded with flavor and damn good pesto. The Salmon with clam special featured a big cut of salmon (in the 3/4 lb range) perfectly cooked.
Service friendly and efficient.
Finding a good restaurant near the Irish Repertory Theater is not easy, so we're always searching. While certainly not a "destination" restaurant, Zagara fills the bill for pre-or post theater just a block from Irish Rep. The food was good and the prices reasonable. Our service, though, was a bit distracted, and the ambiance is just okay.
I have never been disappointed at Zagara. Food, service, wine list are all exceptional!
Exposed brick and NYC themed modern art on the walls combine for a rustic urban chic look. The food was well prepared and nicely plated. We shared a zucchini soufflé appetizer, an unusual menu item which scored high for creativity and flavor. Nice to find surprise items like this on the menu. Veal Saltimboca was fragrant with lots of fresh sage, seared chicken breast was also a winner. We tried two different Rose wines by the glass from Italy and France, both very good. Chocolate soufflé to finish off the meal nicely.
stellar! simply wonderful. Best meatballs ever. Wonderful appetizers. Divine.... go even if it seems out of the way
I passed Zagara one evening on my way to a friend's home for dinner. As I passed, the aroma of truffles wafted from one of the outdoor tables. I couldn't wait to go for lunch and see if the food was as good as the aroma. We shared the octopus appetizer and it more than met our expectations -- tender and very well spiced. I then had the tagliatelle with mushrooms -- and truffle oil, of course. Just perfect. The owner brought us glasses of limoncello as a treat. A very lovely meal and great service!
Second visit, very tasty food and decent service. I will return!
great service, good food, nice decor, we will be back
Great food, Great service! Ravioli Porcini was outstanding!
My husband and I got together with another couple for lunch after a walk on the High Line. Zagara sounded like a good choice on Open Table, so we decided to try a new place. We are so glad we did!! Giuseppe, as well as his wait staff, were so friendly and accommodating. The food was delicious. Special kudos for the mushroom pappardelle and salad with grilled chicken. We mentioned that we weren’t in a rush, and everyone made us feel like family as they continued to fill up our water glasses without us having to ask them to do so. We even got hugs from Giuseppe as we left. So happy we found this place- we will return!
Great food! Fresh pasta! Many options including healthy and GF if that is what you are looking for. I had homemade ravioli and it was delicious and not too heavy! The sauce was great too, highly recommend.
Good food. Good staff. Decent cost.
All-around fabulous time for our party of 7! Food was delicious and well-prepared and staff was exceptional
We had a party of 8 people, getting together and celebrating one person's achievements. We had a late evening reservation and never felt rushed. The service was outstanding. The food was excellent with portions that satisfied but were not over-whelming. We would definitely dine there again, as would our guests.
The food was absolutely delicious. The homemade pasta was to die for! Nice, quiet restaurant in Chelsea
We were a party of 10 celebrating a birthday. The table location was excellent. The service was superb. The owner Guiseppe came by several times to make sure all was good. All was better than good, it was GREAT! Everyone loved their food choices which ranged from homemade pasta dishes, many appetizers and salads, and terrific desserts. All ten of us walked out full and happy. We will be back!!
Perfectly grilled salmon and excellent service. I recommend it—
Always a great dinner ... best pasta in Chelsea ... perfectly cooked EVERYTIME ... front of restaurant has a great vibe .. GREAT Happy hour crowd .... neighborhood favorite .... back of restaurant great for quiet dinner
Zagara is a true neighborhood gem - always serving delicious, fresh food made with quality ingredients. Homemade pasta dishes are highly recommended. The owner and staff treat you like family when you are there.
Modest setting but the food was excellent and the service very good and very friendly. The four of us order various pastas including a homemade fettuccine with wild boar ragu. All were excellent. Would highly recommend for casual dining with friends.
Excellent dinner, great service. Definitely going to go back!
Service was excellent. Menu selections were varied, prices appropriate. Server was helpful. Food was delicious...we shared a salad and an appetizer...the octopus appetizer was outstanding. Our main courses (one a homemade pasta and the other a fish special) were terrific too. Great spot if you are going to the Irish Reparatory Theater. We'll return.
Delicious homemade pasta! Quick and yummy!
Excellent food & great atmosphere! Service was very friendly. We would go back again next time we are in town. Only downfall for me was it was a little too dark inside but overall a great place!
It was my second time in this very welcoming place. The atmosphere is great not too noise for a very busy night, all restaurant was packed since early evening. This time we tried some items from the menu. I have to tell you they have a very good chef, I think he is from south Italy you can taste the freshness. The gnocchi truffle very light and tasty, my wife took the pappardelle manzo and we share to start the Fried calamari very good. The wine was excellent a nice bottle of Supertuscan. Overall great 25th anniversary.we will come soon. Thanks at the owner he offer us Limoncello e Semifreddo. Great place
The (Flat Fresh Pasta) homemade pasta was very very very good and I still remember this. I am coming back for more. Chocolate souffle was nice as well.
Great food and service. We really enjoyed our meal here.
