Japanese
Yoshi's has served Japan's best traditional dishes to Bay Area patrons since 1972. The menu highlights artfully arranged sushi, fresh grilled seafood, classic Japanese dishes, and vegetarian fare. Patrons can kick off their shoes in the traditional Japanese tatami seating or dine at tables. Expert sushi chefs create sushi and sashimi to order either in the restaurant or in the jazz house. Start the evening in the cocktail lounge before dinner or have a nightcap after taking in a show in the jazz house.

Had tickets to Victor Wooten, and reservations. We seated right away. It was somewhat noisy and busy, which is ok. The service was inconsistent, some delays, mistaken food orders. Food was delicious. Servers were nice, pleasant. Overall price for quantity of servings is a bit expensive.
We did get great seats to the show, though.

We made a reservation for 8 pm on a Sunday evening and arrived 10 minutes early. Since Yoshi's was not very busy (it was getting close to their closing time), we were seated immediately. We were quickly told by our server that the kitchen was closing soon and were asked to order quickly. Upon receiving our meal, we were told that the kitchen was closing up and we were asked if we wanted to place a dessert order. We felt rushed from the moment we arrived. For the $150 meal cost (excluding tip, and including only a shared appetizer, two entrees and a moderate bottle of wine), I would expect to be able to enjoy a meal in peace. Food was good, but the experience was not.

My parents got my wife a gift certificate to come here for her birthday. We were so excited because we love a good sushi dinner. Unfortunately, it was horrible. We eat a lot of sushi and the quality of the fish was poor - not a great taste or texture - yet the prices were on par with the fanciest Bay Area sushi spots. The rolls were weird - many of them were really large and falling apart and covered with mayo. Our drinks were horrible - mine was a cocktail that tasted like straight booze and her cocktail was incredibly sweet. Service was also not great - the place was pretty empty but our server was never there. They brought all our food out at the same time with no room on the tiny table so we felt rushed, but our drinks came ten minutes after that. Also my seat had oil stains on it. A terrible experience and I was really upset by the price gouging.

Nice ambiance, good food, but the menu choices were quite limited and not necessarily traditional Japanese dishes.

Yoshi's no longer stands out in the Oakland food scene like they used to. I have been going here from some 20 years and I have watched other restaurants change and adapt while they remain largely the same, incrementally raising their prices so that they are always roughly twice as expensive as their counterparts. I would say a major innovation in their menu and style is in order if they want to remain a luxury dining establishment.

Only ate at Yoshis because they say you get better seats for their shows. Service is sloooow and many times you have to ask more than once for items, like tableware. Food is OK but menu is limited and prices are high. If it weren’t for the fact they “force” one to eat there I would go somewhere else for dinner. Show was great.

My birthday dinner & the Jonathan Butler performance was EXCELLENT! My waiter, "Steve" made the experience even more pleasurable. His friendly personality, dinner suggestions, and excellent waiter skills were impeccable. He made sure to treat me EXTRA SPECIAL because it was my birthday. All of the staff were friendly and helpful, even in the club area. All the dishes were very tasty, especially the Beet & Mizuna salad and the porkchop was also DIVINE. I LOVE Yoshi's Jazz Club & Restaurant anyway, but my experience this time was off the chart. The Jonathan Butler performance rounded off the whole experience. It was well worth the drive from Sacramento! I'll be back very soon!

Noisy. Uncomfortable. Small tables. Like sardines. Dennys diner at Kinkade's prices! No coat or umbrella racks. Overpriced. Did I say way overpriced? Blah/bland tasting Sushi. Nothing special. Small portions of Sushi. No real taste. Minimum for seat reservations is a joke! Seat reservations blind, no feedback.
Arrived 2 hours early to not sold out show and got crap seats designated. I should have stood in line at box office and helped choose. Discount for parking minimal, better to park on street, garage crowded and expensive and 20 minute line to get out. ( I could have walked to BART in same time)
Good concert despite bad seating, but never will I eat again

Pre-dinner before a show at Yoshi’s. Best to do as they’ll reserve a great seat for you at the show, supposedly in order of dinner check in.

This is a restaurant I visit several times a year. I love the venue for music performances, and a restaurant reservation guarantees a choice Cabaret-style seat for the show. I am not sure if I would frequent it if not for the music. I find the quality of the food very uneven from visit to visit, and the service can be inattentive, which is especially frustrating when showtime is ready to start and you are still waiting for a check to arrive. We have had wonderful Sushi here, and the quality of ingredients used is top notch. Food from the kitchen, however, has been hit or miss. Dishes don't always come out the same way each visit. They just need to remember that at an almost $40 entree price point, people are paying for top notch. OK doesn't cut it.

So sad to post anything but stars. We have been to Yoshi's numerous times in the past year or two and always had excellent everything! This time, not so excellent service. We will go back and try again I'm sure and hope to get back to the norm we got used to. Not sure what was going on this night. going to hope it was just a bad night for the servers. Our dinner was just under $500 , which made me even more sad that the service wasn't spot on. It was interesting that getting a server and our food seemed to take forever, but she sure got the check ( Set Gratuity included BTW) to me right after dessert hit the table. Definitely wasn't our "Usual" experience at Yoshis's. We have bragged about it to friends over and over, but will reserve doing that any further until our next trip.

Overall, very nice experience. The service team was just a tad out of step in coordinating the show we were going to watch right after dinner. It would be great to coordinate the two more tightly. Maybe take our drink/desert order for the show while we are still in the restaurant? That would seem to be a great way to keep the wonderful vibe from dinner going and have the two (dinner and show) seem a little better coordinated.

Also, our table in the dining room was not ideal. Tables were a little tight. Maybe ditch the tatame seating (didn't seem to get used) and use the space to give the dining room a little more elbow room.

Other than that, it was a great dining experience with great food, service, and ambiance. We will be back....

We made a reservation but had to wait to get seated along with several others who had reservations at the same time.

The food was expensive and the quality was meh! I wouldn’t order that again-spinach and bacon salad and Pork belly scallops.

The service was just ok.

Staff was accommodating and efficient. Wait staff very friendly and customer service oriented. Entertainment good. We had a party of 13 and everyone had a good time.

One small issue—We asked staff for a small container since we had a bouquet of flowers but one person said they could not help us, we asked another person if we could borrow water pitcher and no one ever came back. It was a special occasion for a visitor from Germany and he was disappointed because he brought the flowers for the table.

Yoshi’s is a good venue for live music-the room is small and there is no bad seat. Service in the concert area, however, is usually poor. This week, my husband and I never had our drink order taken during the entire performance.

I also think it a tacky and cheap policy to require a $35 minimum per person in the dining room in order to have a table reserved for the show.

Our table was located on an entryway passage to multiple other tables and was very busy. My entree arrived 20 minutes after my wife finished her dinner. The fish had clearly sat under a hot lamp for a while and was over cooked. Staff however was nice, responsive, and apologetic.

New Years eve dinner a ripoff. $95 per person, fixed 5 course meal, mediocre sushi, waiter was nonexistent probably due to 20% tip tacked on automatically even for only two people! over priced meal, and shockingly so since i didnt realize the menu was fixed.

Specifically went to dinnerto get show seats reserved and ended up with worse seat in the house sandwiched between small table and wall with my long legs pertruding out into the walkway right behind another small table of four sandwiched in front of me. Spent the entire concert feeling every butt ( and a few frontal areas for people passing buy not wanting to brush my knees with their butt:-O). And just get the great customer service go to when i complained...sorry we cant do anything we know its too tight. but no one else had to feel everyones butt when they passed by. and lucky me, this was the only entrance to the aisle so throughout te concert people and waiters both peovided unwanted advances! Last but not least paying over $700 for such a night with mediocre food, horrible customer service (but a great show when people were not passing in front of me) is very disappointing. Will not return to Yoshis...but they dont care since they sell out and been there for over 30 years! very distasteful!

This was New Year's Eve and so a fixed price menu. I would have preferred to order off of the menu. The food was fine, okay, but not outstanding. It was a four course menu with pretty large portions though. The entertainment was fabulous, Brian Culbertson which is why we came. We only eat at Yoshi's when we are attending an event.

Food servers in the restaurant were excellent. And the cocktail server in the concert room was excellent. Both were very friendly. The business was very crowded due to the holidays and the Brian Culbertson concert. But the experience was manageable.

I brought a friend here from Canada in October for the Denice Williams show and had an incredible meal. I insisted with my company that we dine before the Brian Culbertson show on December 30/19. I made sure to order the same dishes: the tempura shrimp and one of the rolls. We were planning to order other items to try and were spacing out the meal since the show didn't start until 8pm but were beginning to hesitate because of what we were experiencing with the dishes. The shrimp was very small, completely flavorless and didn't even come with the dip I had with it last time. The roll was so mediocre that I know for a fact, I've had better sushi rolls at the Wednesday $5 sushi rolls at Sprouts. We were sitting there trying to decide if we should spend another $20 on a dish that had a strong chance of being mediocre, when the server came up and said there was a table rule and we would have to spend $35 on food before tax for priority seating. I had never been told that before. I was completely OFFENDED because after spending $152 on show tickets and driving from Sacramento, the last thing I expected was to be roughed up for not spending enough money during a high ticket show. I requested the bill and when I received it, I pointed out that we HAD spent $35 before tax so I needed him to explain what the problem was and why we were being publicly embarrassed like that with other patrons watching the exchange. I will never patronize this restaurant again which I will also reflect in my online reviews and instagram. I'm really disappointed in Yoshi's restaurant and surprised. I have had a long history with Yoshi's. I published a blues magazine for 10 years, "Real Blues Magazine" and Yoshi's ran ads in our magazine for almost that entire time. We did everything to support the club; we helped booked artists, we recommended artists to the club and we heavily promoted Yoshi's. The restaurant has been a big fail and this writer will not ever forget the experience.
