Yellow Plum Ratings and Reviews
We gave the Plum one last shot and it will definitely be the last. Saturday night and only one other table filled that should have been a sign. The waitress was a sweetheart but definitely new at the job. Appetizers looked like they came out of a box and the steak was terrible. Complete 180 from when it first opened. I cant see myself going back.
The service and ambiance were nice but the food was subpar. They should match the quality with their prices. The lobster slider was fishy and the rib eye didn't have much flavor. I thought the list of draft beers was odd abs charging $8 for a Guinness is nuts!
When we arrived it was unclear where to go to meet the hostess, we were however promptly sat and someone grabbed our drink order. Both drink were not made very well including one of their signature cocktails, eponymously, the yellow plum. The atmosphere was a bit too casual and there were hoagies and other pub fare that seemed to don most of the diners plates. Which made me think this place could not be expected of more than a "nice" diner.
The food was ok, fresh but definitely not worth the price. We had individual salads, the Caesar dressing tasted like garlic mayonnaise, the beet salad was overdressed, but presented nice. Bother sliders were randomly brought out as an intermezzo, not much to be expected at $5 each.
Wine was a bit tinny and needed some time to breathe.
The mains were nothing to write home about.
Bottom line we could have gone to a byo next door for half the price and a much more delicious meal. Additionally, when comparing atmospheres there are much better options nearby via diners or American pub fare.
Best bet if you would like to try this place would be best to do so outside when the weather breaks, for lunch.
Ordered drinks and an appetizer for the table. We got the appetizer before our drinks. The lemon chicken was tough and ordered a side of grilled spinach. Did not get it and when we asked said sorry so we cancelled it and they brought out creamed spinach about 10 minutes later and told them we didn't want creamed spinach. Forgot to take it off the bill the pasta was good but for what you got not worth it. the fish & chips was ok but the fries were soggy. The burger was ok but the tater tots seemed like they came out of a bag from shop rite. No need to go back again!!!!!!!! Not worth the price.
Would definitely go back. Menu is a little hard to choose from I think they are trying to cover all bases. Only thing I would change is the "server" who after a table left sprayed it many times with some awful smelling chemical to clean. I appreciate the clean table but not while I'm trying to eat.
Little thing that could be changed easily.
This is a wonderful place to go for a creative menu that is well executed, but that doesn't get carried away with itself. The waitstaff is always enthusiastic about providing great service. (Soon to be a legend, Matt, in particular, is very attentive and scary-good at remembering a patron and his/her food and cocktail preferences!) Elegant and casual atmosphere, welcoming staff, and satisfying food.
We enjoyed Yellow Plum the other night. We shared several appetizers, which were off of a very eclectic menu. Four of us shared apps ranging from fried calamari, to crab cake sliders, to short rib quesadillas and all were delicious. I would recommend this if you wanted to share many apps and have light bar fare. The service was very positive and pleasant and out waitress made great recommendations on how many items to order and which items to have to mix it all up. Very tasty.
I really love the food at Yellow Plum. The staff as noted in other reviews is somewhat inexperienced but very pleasant and accommodating.
My daughter had 3/4 of her Rib dinner left on her plate. Server asked if she would like that to take home and then proceeded to forget. As we were leaving after dessert and settling the bill, we asked where the ribs were and the server said she didn't think we wanted them. really? Who leaves that much food?
She sweetly offered to order another dinner to take with us which was the right thing to do but we decided not to wait.
My husband and I ate here because of an Amazon local promotion we had. After tasting the food we will be back again. We got appetizers, the mac and cheese is worth a trip back alone as are the empanadas. The ribs I had were mouth-watering, the only thing I wasn't crazy about were the collard greens & grits that came with my meal. But my husband's farafalle pasta was equally delicious so we are planning on coming back to taste all the apps they have.
I like this place. It looks very nice and neat on the outside. They have a nice candle on the table. The service is fast and friendly. The food is tasty. They do not have a lot on the menu but what they do have is different. They could use more options . They have take out. A nice long bar which is nice.
The menu is very limited withore beef than most and less fish... Only salmon was offered as an entree non meat .... We actually had difficulty finding something to eat here and ended up with soup as an appetizer which was very good but would not prdinary be my first choice .... Entrees--salmon and short ribs -- good but home made peanut butter ice cream was the highlight IMHO..... Think I would go back for happy hour and appetizers but not for dinner.
Would recommend. Very good food. Very good service. Very nice ambience. Able to get table on a Saturday night last minute but place was by no means empty. Crowded but not jam packed. Nice vibe in the place. If I am in the area again I would go back. Only knock I would give is menu a little heavy on the deep fried options.
The food certainly hit the Mark. The service was young and very under-trained. It was hotter than hades in there and when we asked about the temp the hostess was kind but looked like a deer in headlights at the request. On a positive note the chicken lollipops were fantastic and the music was amazing. I just can't enjoy anything in the setting of bikram yoga.
This restaurant is always such a treat to go to. Food is always consistently great. I can't get enough of the chicken lollipops or the Caesar salad. I recently tried the linguine and clams and I was blown away by how good it was. It was NOT drowning in garlic which is how this dish is prepared many other places. Just a perfect meal every time!
Went for restaurant week and although we were disappointed with the choices, and the service was very slow, the food was delicious and cooked perfectly. 3 of us all had the salmon, which is not one of my favorite dishes but the best of the choices, (the others were grilled chicken, risotto & wild mushroom, or the hamburger, a $30 menu) and was well prepared and very good, as an app 2 of us had mac and cheese with short ribs, "the most delicious thing I ever ate" was my husband's comment, and a Caesar salad was fresh and had interesting ingredients such as sliced brussels sprouts, but was a little light on the dressing, and a chocolate pudding for desert was just right.
I recommend them for a better than average meal. Great happy hour too!
Our waitress was working so hard, v polite, but she really needed a busboy. We never had our water glasses refilled, and they were TINY to begin with. Also, we weren't offered a second glass of wine. Prices are v high here a la carte, so the service was v disappointing. Also, the prix fixe meant that corners were cut: the pot de creme we had in May was NOT the one we had Friday night! Very small, not special at all. However, best frites and bernaise ever!!
Went on a friday night with another couple. We were a little nervous because it was empty in the main dining area at 8:00 pm. Outside patio and the bar areas were a little busier. The bar had a live band which were okay. We all started with salads which were good. The entree choices at our table were the Steak, Lobster, and Salmon. They were all very good. The wine/drink menu has a good variety. Our service was excellent. The food was solid and the ambience is very nice so I'm not sure why it was so empty...maybe a bit overpriced for the area. The prices are comparable to any Montclair eatery and the food is just as good. I hope people discover it.
Dinner for 4 on Sat June 14th. Great appetizers ...Soba noodles with chicken was a hit along with mac &cheese. Main courses strong all around..The eggplant cannelloni was fantastic and unexpected. Burgers and steak as well. Loved the minimal decor. Our only critique was that the host tried to seat us next to the open door . we requested to sit further back. He was accommodating but I was puzzled since we had a reservation and should have been offered the better table first.
We went on a week night so it was not crowded. With that being said the service was slow. The waiter seemed more interested in the large group of women dining outside. No bread or amuse bouche was served beforehand. The caesar salad with arugula was a nice twist on an old standby. The salmon with lentils was delicious, but my friend asked for hers to be cooked well done, I asked for medium. Both of our salmons were very rare! We would have returned it, but the waiter was unavailable. He also brought the side of broccoli rabe at the end of our meal. Frustrated we decided to have dessert somewhere else. Given that the food was good, might try it again.
They brought 3 of our 4 dinners and promised the fourth would be out shortly. After an apology and a few minutes, they brought me 2 crab sliders to keep me "occupied" until my main course arrived. What a nice touch. (We all know that bad timing can ruin a dinner. especially when one person at the table has not received their dinner; then no one wants to eat!) I have been to restaurants costing 2 or 3 times more where they didn't do those kind of things. I was very impressed with that. On the other hand: juice glasses for water? Really??
The first restaurant I have been to in years where I felt compelled to leave less than a 15 percent tip. The food was mediocre at any price, and certainly not worth what Yellow Plum charges--my son ordered a $38 filet mignon that arrived tough and overdone. Service was terrible- missed drink and food orders, interminable delays, etc. I went on the strength of multiple highly positive reviews on OpenTable but was grievously misled and will never pay attention to these again.
Service was excellent - relaxed but knowledgeable and easy. I'm a picky eater and typically do not have many choices; I liked that they offered "silent" vegetarian options "up front". The pounded pork chop was great as were the fried brownies and arugula caesar -- diverse items, but excellent. We didn't find the prices any more elevated than neighboring Montclair - nowhere near offensive. We will be back!
We found the Yellow Plum kind of by surprise and I have to say we were so incredibly glad we did. It's a 30 minute drive from where we live, but I can't wait to go back and bring friends with us. The interior is decorated in this kind of modern/retro/chic kind of way. The staff was perfect and the food was absolutely divine; some dishes had a subtle hint of flavor perfect for warm comfort food, while others were intense and robust. The portions are generous but you still wish you had one more bite because it just tasted THAT good.
We already have plans to go back this week!
Had never been to Yellow Plum until last Saturday. The menu is excellent - plenty of choices for everyone. The food is excellent, particularly the crab cake sliders (an appetizer that could be an entree for a light eater!). Red snapper was a great entree. Didn't try any desserts.
My husband and I honestly don't know why this place isn't packed every night! The food, the service, and the atmosphere are all top notch, I've seen some comments about small portions - just not true! Dishes are all prepared with quality ingredients and generous portions! The oxtail ravioli and lobster bolognese never disappoint. My husband and I are definitely fans!
We went on a slow Tuesday night, sat at the bar and were served by Erica, a very sweet young lady. We were glad we read several on line reviews before we went since there were so many different menu options, and not all were provided at first. We opted for the $35 prix fix in order to sample several items. The short ribs are as good as described with Brussels sprouts and sweet potato purée. The chef provided all white meat, instead of mixed white and dark, for the other entree, also very tasty. The fried brownie dessert and ice cream sandwich desset were both very good. We will definitely return to try some of the other entrees, tapas, and the delicious looking burger.
