We loved every creative and expertly prepared and served dish, from the starters to the sushi, sides, and desserts. The spectacular views, gardens, and decor, as well as the winding drive to get there made this a very memorable meal.

It’s such a shame that this location isn’t put to better use. The best thing about this restaurant is the location and architecture. It has the potential to be something really special but it’s currently an expensive tourist trap. The food is not horrible but but painfully mediocre. The music was confusing and too loud and we never really knew who our server was. The location is tempting but please be strong and avoid. There are sooo many amazing restaurants in LA so don’t waste your time on this one.

Crazy bad experience at Yamashiro. They sat us in the courtyard with 2 other couples...no view, loud Motown music playing, average service at best, and food that had very little relation to the Japanese name & surroundings. If you want the view, have a drink in their bar, and then go somewhere else for a nice dinner.

The view from the Restaurant is wonderful. Our server was wonderful! I can’t remember her name but she was thin, caucasian with red hair. Only a few things were a little off, like paying $16 dollars for a medium size bottle of cheap tasting hot sake. Also also the crab cake was not good at all. It wasn’t really a crab cake at all, it was just a large ice cream scoop shape of hot crab meat, scallions and peppers on top of a pool of spicy mayo? But by the time we had polished off 3 bottles of $16 sake ($48) I wasn’t to worried about it. Lastly, the bathrooms looked very neglected. I feel like a mountain palace could probably afford to hire a bathroom attendant.
Other than that, it was great energy, great service, and everything besides the crab cake was excellent! I recommend getting down to New Orleans or Maryland and learning how to make a proper crab cake. Or change the name of the dish to pile of steaming crab and mayonnaise. Thankyou Yamashiro.

We had a nice dinner for 3 on a Wednesday evening. However, there was a very large awards party in the other half of the restaurant, and the mandatory valet became paralyzed for 40 minutes! Wasn’t sure we would ever make it out of there.

Table service was terrible.
Food was mediocre.
Our server was ignoring us and forgot plates etc. I asked for a taste of wine before a glass. He forgot it until Galway through the meal. Then just brought the glass. He was ending his shift and just wanted to rush us. It was my first time here and don’t know that I’ll be back.

Terrible service for expensive food that tasted cheap.

I’ve been going to Yamashiro for 40 years.
I was unable to read the menu because I forgot my glasses.
The waiter highly recommended a dish without telling me the dish alone cost $218 and that I had to cook the meat which was extremely thin and flavorless. It came with over cooked cold broccoli and cold small potatoes I had a few bites only. I was very disappointed. I spoke to the insensitive manager who did not care at all. I spoke to the waiter who was very rude and extremely insensitive. When dining out one should trust that a server will provide information if a dish is that expensive and should have let me know that I had to cook my own food, I never would have agreed to that. Yamashiro is nothing like what it use to be, it’s now all about the money and zero concern about the service. It lost all of its glamour.
I will never go again.

Yamashiro means mountain palace. The location is hidden behind some property on a hill. It is very steep. But once uphill the city view is amazing. There is a beautiful garden, small pond w koi fish and the laughing Buddha statue offering a feeling of peace. The restuarant decor is Japanese inspired with shoji doors & light fixtures w a mural in entryway. It is handicapped accessible if you're in a wheelchair. Assuming due to the steep hill, narrow roadway and limited parking, valet is mandatory. Valet is $10.
Our party of 6 dined on Sunday afternoon. The Sunday Brunch experience was great. We were greeted & seated by the host. She was pleasant. The wait staff, Ricky was great. The bottomless mimosas were definitely endless. The food was the typical brunch: eggs, biscuit, potatoes, omelette station, waffle station, meat carving station, fruit, and dessert table but yummy. The nice surprise was sushi and crab legs.
Every thing was self serving buffet style therefore no portion control. The food handling team tried to replenish but with the crowd, the food would quickly disappear. It tasted pretty good though.

The price is $45/per adult and children age 4-12 is $24. Bottomless mimosas are an additional $10. We did have a problem with our bill being charged as 6 adults and 6 bottomless mimosas when there was a child dining with us that could not drink. And the waiter said the manager told him that anyone over 8 years old is considered a adult. We literally had to show what was on the website. The manager came to our table to explain and resolve the situation. The receipt was changed about 3 times because their system could not remove charges so the manager applied gift certificates. Overall, great view, good music and great customer service. Will visit again for the dinner menu and night view.

The Udon noodles were undercooked and small. The Koshu Braised Wagyu Short Ribs tasted gamey, like liver, gross! The Malibu sushi roll was delicious. The waiter was pleasant, but didn't ask if everything was okay with our meal, even though I literally had 1 small bite of the ribs and my plate looked virtually untouched. The view is SPECTACULAR! Doubt I will go back though. ☹

Food=B, Service=C-, Ambiance=B, Valet Parking=F- While the food was better than its been in years, the service was geared towards tourists; I’m a local. Valet managed to scrape the back of my car hours after I bought it brand new. The server just forgot one course, but never offered to comp anything. It will be another ten years before I go back. The multitude of tourists go for the view. That said: Have a drink at the bar, take your pics, then move on. There’s much higher quality in other restaurants.

It was my birthday so I decided to go somewhere special. I booked my table on Thursday so that means They had to have my table ready by 8:30. When we got there they made us to wait 15 mins, while they were making sure the people who came after us and didn’t place reservation get their tables after 15mins when I went to ask what’s going on the lady who got my name and made me to wait, she even didn’t remember me she asked my name again like it was her first time that she was meeting me( I was really disappointed) finally after 20 mins they got ready my table in patio where you can go without any reservation.
Yamashiro used to be a Grade A restaurant so I don’t know what happened!!

Yamashiro is that very famous place you just never get around to going to. We finally went up for drinks and appetizers on a Saturday night and had a very mediocre meal with great service and a great view. That's it. It's an LA staple, it's cool to check out and you won't leave unhappy but you can get better food almost anywhere else for a way lower price.

The food was great! Not really sure what the other reviewers ordered, or maybe my standards are low (although I would
like to think not), but we thought it was really good. The views and overall ambiance is amazing! Our server was attentive and we did not have to wait long for our food, even on a busy Saturday night. The Pagoda bar was not open, so that was a bummer. We will definitely be back.

We really enjoyed our evening there were only a few things that I offered as suggestions for improvement and that was seasoning on the fries as they tasted freezer burned as did the dessert tart. The bathroom could use some sprucing up the wallpaper is peeling off in almost every stall. I called ahead to make reservations for a very early dinner and although we enjoyed dining in the courtyard we had asked if we could have something inside and they were only two tables that were occupied and they told us they could not accommodate us which seemed a little strange. Our waiter JR was fabulous the food tasted delicious other than the above mentioned items. I was hoping to take a souvenir home from the restaurant as it was a very memorable and special occasion and they don’t offer any. As it is a Hollywood landmark I think something like this would be a great idea.

The new owners have to captured the success of the previous owner.

A food truck and stands by the Buddha along the front side of the building is a very disappointing way to increase revenue.

Music was loud and vintage, which is great generally. However, the garden is a zen area and deserves appropriate music

The new menu is mostly beef and not what is was with the previous owner
