I been going to Yamashiro’s for 25 years today was the worst!! Ordered appetizers at 7pm... at 7:45pm had to ask the manager where our food was! Ended up not ordering anything else...

The best restaurant experience I’ve had yet. The view was amazing. Of course the drinks and food were also!

I have been here a few times. This was my first in a year since becoming vegan. Almost no options for vegan meal. Salad & 1 veggie roll. Weird for a Japanese cuisine. View is spectacular. Staff is nice. Cocktails were good. (East coast)

I was thoroughly disappointed with my experience here. They are clearly banking on the location and ambiance because the sushi menu and menu in general is very limited. The quality of the sushi was good not great, and the rolls we ordered were 18 dollars each, wrapped in the seaweed tighter and smaller than they should have been and the seaweed itself was more chewy, probably because it was so tightly wrapped. The sushi pieces we ordered were also $12 for 2 pieces and they were tiny. About 2/3 the size of other sushi spots. This combined with sitting there for 20 minutes waiting for our waiter to notice us and also him telling us that they might be out of that for multiple saki bottles we were thinking of ordering.

Recommendation: Save your money, if you go there just pay the 10 bucks for parking and get the view but do not eat there. Go to a better sushi spot that is worth the money.

We enjoyed our evening. There for a birthday. Requested birthday treat from frostless, and that never materialized, but otherwise enjoyed the view and garden. Get the giant fortune cookie. The kid in,you will rejoice.

I was Yamasiros's for a birthday dinner with my partner and although I enjoyed the cuisine, and ambience was very nice,
however, the manner in which most people dressed was disappointing for such an upscale restaurant, and the constant screams of babies crying both made the upscale experience less than I had hoped for. Yamashiro's should have a dress code, and a noise proof, childproof area for parent with babies and kids

We love Yamashiro. The restaurant unfortunately opened 20 minutes late so our 5 pm reservation with 2 small children was not ready. It took another 15 minutes for us to get seated and a server to greet us. Our children were starving and grouchy by this point. Once our server came, everything was FABULOUS! Mica was a great server and the food delicious. They did an amazing job of making our daughters 13th birthday feel super special. She was thrilled! We will be back. Be warned, the giant fortune cookie was GIANT! They are not kidding! I don't even like fortune cookies, but this is worth it!

It was my wife's and I wedding anniversary. We get there 15 min early for our reservation and wait. They didn't open the doors until 10 minutes after our reservation time / opening time and ther are about 15 other people ther waiting while the staff just walked back and forth inside watching us while we watched them. Next we are seated in a box corner so small we can't sit opposite each other but next to each other at 45 degrees. When we ask for another table the hostess cops an attitude. We go back to the main desk and they just did not have their act together. So the same hostess points out another small table right next to the stairs and in the walk aisle. They put tables in the darnedest places.... At that point I'm pissedbut it's our anniversary so I don't want it ruined and simply say we'll stay at the first table because it's the best of the bad and only options they've given. Then, they seat a family with 3 small kids next to use no seemed to have a needn't or everyone I the place to hear them. The kids are breaking glasses, crying, they parent are using team Disney parenting techniques and the entire experience was 180 degrees from those we've had at Yamashiro's previously. In fact it's one of my wife's favorite restaurants....or was.

A thinly veiled tourist trap.

While the location is beautiful and the building itself is impressive, the experience starts to fall apart in the details. I don't mind paying $20 for a whisky, but serving it in a low quality, thick-rimmed glass (or putting canned whipped cream on a $14 dessert) is just disrespectful to the guest. The signature rolls were mostly very Americanized, nearly all being covered in spicy mayo, unagi sauce, or both. The quality of the fish was fine though, and the citrus roll was actually fantastic. A word to the wise though, the sushi boat will not be enough for two people with modest appetites. We made sandwiches when we got home, lol. Nothing was terrible, but for my money it didn't feel like a valuable way to spend $200.

Overall, it just kind of felt like a restaurant that people with questionable taste would eat in to revel in their own wealth. Perhaps we should have tried their hot items instead, but I doubt I'll go back to find out.

I truly wish I could write a better review'; I was so looking forward the experience. The food was good. And yes the location is one of a kind. We got there early on a Sun night, 5 pm, hoping to beat the crowd. Turned out to be a slow evening; many open tables throughout the restaurant all evening; however, service was very slow. We were one of the first to the restaurant, but for some reason got placed in the corner. What really killed the evening was the valet, or lack thereof. Scary!! We waited 30 minutes for our car before we had to go find it ourselves, along with several other guests. No security; we could have driven off with the car our choice. It was total chaos. In the end, it took us 1.50 hours to get in our car and drive home, and it still cost me $10!!

We went to dinner prior to a Hollywood bowl show. It's very close by, easy valet. Prompt seating and service was great. The decor and atmosphere is very nice and traditional. The menu was ok. I expected more selections. I didn't see anything really appetizing. We ate sushi, it was good.

It’s not the Yamashiro it used to be. I made a reservation in advance for special occasion with my husband and they refused to give us table with the view, even though I specifically requested it. The restaurant was empty, there were plenty of tables with the view available, but they put us in the back . We had no view, no good service the food is horrible, the price is very high. Our evening was ruined. Do not go to this place!

This restaurant has lots of windows and is perched on the hillside, so there are expansive views of the city. Nice garden outside and beautiful courtyard inside. Large facility with lots of tables. We wanted sushi for dinner on our one-night trip to Hollywood. Although there was another sushi restaurant closer to our hotel, we wanted something unique- in this case, a pretty interior and a nice view. For our situation, it was a great choice. The fish was fresh. The cocktails were not the best... perhaps we should have gone with sake instead. Overall a pleasant experience.

Usually the place is loud and the service is poor, but it was Halloween and the whole restaurant was deserted so we had great service!
I hate the new menu and miss the old one very much. Even the salt stone is gone and was replaced by an insipid version.
The service used to be great, now not so much!!!!
Whoever took the place over seems to only cater to tourists and probably doesn’t even eat at Yamashiro.
I’ve been a patron since 1991 and am saddened by the decline!

My husband and I decided to go here for our one year anniversary. Honestly, the view is incredible, the food was delicious, the service was definitely something that needs to be worked on.

We walked in and the hostess had us wait at the bar until our table was ready. Which that was fine, but the bartender was so frazzled and couldn't comprehend making any of the drink specials, and threw a cocktail menu at me and said that's all she could make. Okay, then don't put specials on the board...

Our actual server was great, very friendly, but no nonsense.

I did end up getting a drink on the regular drink menu when we got to our table and it was okay. The food however was really delicious, the flavor and taste of everything was fantastic. It was a nice change up from our usual haunts for our one year dinner but Yamashiro do yourself a favor and get a new bartender... or discuss the drink specials with her if your going to keep her.

I must say I was very disappointed after hearing so many good things about Yamashiro. The gentleman who worked the valet were very attentive and very sweet and very professional. We went into the bar to have a drink and our server in the bar was very engaging and very attentive. When we were seated the host pretty much ignored us pointed to a table and that’s where we sat. Our waiter was, obviously, overworked and paid almost no attention to us at all. The food was average and the six of us at our table had a wide variety. The black card was probably the best of the lot. Five out of the six of us asked for take-home bags and none of us ended up with them. Again, our server forgot about us and then when asked said he could not locate them in the kitchen. A beautiful view of the city of Angels but A very disappointing celebratory dinner.

This is not the Yamashiro of old. It used to be a magical, elegant and wonderful culinary experience. It now is a shell of its former self. The hosts were lovely upon our greeting. It was all down hill after that. The server was weeded even though they weren't that busy. My wife and I ordered a cocktail to share while we looked over the menu. It was sake with ginger beer. It took exactly twenty minutes to receive this cocktail. The server apologized and said the bar was overwhelmed. I checked, it wasn't. A couple next to us cancelled their cocktail order and immediately ordered a check because it was taking too long. Another table next till us never received their drinks to which the server replied the bar is overwhelmed. We finally got our appetizer, egg rolls, around the same time we received our drinks. The egg rolls were sub par. We had the black cod for main course where my wife promptly choked on a long black hair which directly sent her running to the bathroom. Mind you this is a $40 entree. I spoke with the manager who was very nice and accommodating and took care of the whole meal. We promptly left thereafter never to return again. This was supposed to be an anniversary dinner for my wife and I. We will never forget this anniversary. Unfortunately.
