Nestled in the Vail Village, this sophisticated sushi and Japenese restaurant offers an intimate and fun dining experience. With a menu that focuses on fresh fish and a variety of specialty cocktails, this surprisingly chic restaurant fulfills the needs of the health conscious and fun-seeking individuals, and fits right into Vail’s exceptional nightlife.

Yama's Japanese-born chef Ted Minami's traditional approach to the artistry of Japanese cuisine expertly compliments wild child, chef Chris Aycock's innovative techniques. This unique blend satisfies the most discriminating palate and is sure to delight, and is further expressed by the smart ambiance and crimson lit dining room. While patrons dine to the sounds of acid jazz, glances of the Rocky Mountains and conversations about the day's snow adventures can be a perfect reminder of the fact that they are dining in one of the most picturesque ski town's in the world.

We really liked the meal and had excellent service. The fish was quite good - especially the Colorado sea bass - and the sashimi entrees were all excellent. There were several of us and we had a few. The only thing that needs work is the sushi rice, which didn't quite have the right flavor. It tasted closer to plain white rice instead of seasoned rice. For that reason I would give the nigiri sushi 4 stars, but the sashimi 5 stars.

We arrived at the restaurant and had a wonderful reception by Cici and Bren, who was also our waitress that night. She helped us choosing the food, telling us her favourites. Everything was great. Food had great presentation, taste even better. Orders arrived pretty fast. Sake was also Bren's call. It was very nice and not expensive. Beer was cold as it should. Fish really fresh and for a nice finish the brownie tempura was great. Had a great time and amazing food. Congrats to all staff and specially to Bren!

Their sushi is the best in vail along side Matsuhisa! Yama has such a cozy small hip ambience which we enjoy! We come to vail both summer and winter and go to Yama every visit! This week the service was better than ever which made it even more awesome!!!
It’s worth the money!!!!

Fresh sushi and cocktails, served creatively. Yama rarely disappoints. If you want to break away from the typical rolls and beer experience, this is a good bet.

The food is always outstanding. They have specialty items that we don’t get in Portland, Oregon that are very creative and WORK. Can’t say I’ve had a bad menu selection. The service is friendly, but getting a table can be a creative adventure. The restaurant is popular and TINY. I’ve read lots of complaints, but if you are a little flexible and understanding, I have found that they work hard to accommodate. I come for a week in Vail a year and have been doing so for 12 years. I will continue to schedule two dinners a week there.

Nice place- cozy table placement- NYC close. Food was really nice. Fresh fish- all enjoyed their meals. The seaweed salad was icy cold- new experience. Would pass on the spicy salmon rolls but all the rest we had was great. Service was outstanding. Note: they serve very quickly so if you want things at your pace, order accordingly.

Excellent food. We ordered nigiri: toro, uni and several other types of tuna as well as the Summer in Vail roll and wagyu strips. So good we ordered a second round of the nigiri and beef and bought our chef his favorite drink. The same week, we did Chef’s omakase at Matsuhisa and preferred our Yama dinner hands down (Matsuhisa was very good as well but didn’t hit it out of the park like Yama in our opinion).

We wanted to like Yama, went out of our way to book and have dinner on our stay in vail, unfortunately, this wasn’t to be... we arrived for our reservation and had to wait about 15 minutes, perfect, NO Problem at all however, on a 20 degree night in Vail their front waiting area was so small, they couldn’t accommodate us (4) and the 2-3 other families waiting at the same time while the previous guests cleared and it became VERY awkward when we had to get into arguments about the lack of space and poorly positioned coat closet (we had angry guests yelling at us because they couldn’t get to the coat closet for their jackets). We and other waiting patrons had to step back outside so exiting guests could get out...poorly planned! Ok forgetting the “traffic” outside, we have a few food allergies.....we’ve eaten sushi all over the world... by definition, it’s made to order... they had trouble accommodating the most simple requests, I mean simple, they couldn’t do one of their rolls without the sauce, they couldn’t separate our order by person, they couldn’t tell us what was in their food, INSANE! They were hand making our order (it’s a sushi bar!) and for ~$100 per person they couldn’t easily accommodate anything that wasn’t a checkbox on their low class cheap “chain”sushi restaurant “fill it in yourself” menu. Now during the tragic back and forth where we received and rejected many of our dishes, our waitress tried SO hard so, we can’t blame her. but, the TRAGIC lack of attention or consideration (mainly by the kitchen) at this overpriced, under done restaurant in vail takes it off our list for future visits. Steer clear unless you’re comfortable ordering off the fill it in yourself, no modifications accepted mediocre sushi menu. It’s a shame, it has potential but how upsetting they couldn’t be bothered to care about their guests at all.

Yama is the best sushi spot in Vail by a long shot. Quaint and friendly with excellent service and an overall awesome atmosphere, I can’t recommend it enough. Was perfect for a nice quiet dinner with my visiting parents.

Good value and excellent service. Close quarters which made for a noisy experience when the folks at the next table were very loud. Difficult to enjoy good food when you cannot converse at your own table. Would hope that it was an infrequent occurrence.

outstanding quality sushi and japanese food. . .Brenn is an exceptional server, and we've now gotten to the point where we just ask her to order for us, and have never been disappointed in what she's chosen.

A real "find" in the Vail Restaurant scene. . .
