Our service was absolutely delightful allowing us to thoroughly enjoy a birthday celebration! The oysters were some of the best I've ever had. The bluefin tuna was also top notch! A great sake selection. They were out of several of the desert selections but the black sesame ice cream worked for us! Actually, the entire experience was world-class!
Excellent neighborhood joint for sushi and ramen! Service was efficient (not particularly friendly, but that’s an individual server thing...) Food was really good, though. Rolls were yummy and ramen was very good. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the neighborhood.
Fabulous sushi. Did not like sitting upstairs as it removes one from the camaraderie of dining with others. The busser came to the table with a full bus tub of dirty dishes to collect one of ours. NO! NEVER! Detracted from the experience. Food always great.
Always a great experience at this restaurant. Inventive cuisine and fresh seafood. Oysters on the half-shell as well. Delicious.
The volcano roll was hands down the best thing we ordered. We even ordered another. The outdoor seating was nice and I appreciated being able to bring my dog. All of the rolls were top quality and the 55 sake was great too.
We enjoyed the food but service was terrible. We ordered appetizers and the waiter didn’t come back again for at least 45 minutes till long after we’d finished eating the apps. Dinner took a long time to arrive and one roll of sushi was missing. Waters were not refilled. Plates were never cleared. It was just very unfortunate since the food was great.
I went there for my birthday, and the food was amazing! I got the Yama Bento Box and the Yuzu sake wine. Both were amazing and perfectly complimented each other. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a date night, special occasion, or even just for a great lunch! 10/10, would recommend!
Excellent service and the food is way beyond excellent. Have not had a "roll" that was not YUMMY! The sushi and nigiri is fresh and served well ... always a great presentation! Can not say enough good things about YAMA ... repeat customers here and will continue to support them!
Son and mom dinner
Excellent, as always.
I had two very drastically different experiences with this restaurant. My boyfriend and i went there our first night and had an amazing food experience, the grilled octopus was plated nicely and garnished with a touch of perfection. The second night however the grilled octopus was charred and did not have the same dry rub it was so carefully done in the previous night. The plating was drastically different as well as it looks like the cook had just thrown it on the plate. We also didnt recieve the same sauce/garnishes we did the previous night. We ordered a tuna tower and the server took our utensils and began smashing the tower before we had a chance to appreciate it at all. She exclaimed it was the best part, but ive never had a tuna tower mashed down and sturred up to look like dog chow in front of me before. Im perplexed...
Our go to sushi restaurant. We come here at least once a month and have tried almost all the specialty rolls. Never disappoints!
Good but not great
Food was amazing the only issue was that our reservation did not show up on their guest list. They did however try to accommodate to fit us in but unfortunately the only available tables were outside. I didn’t make a fuss and took the alternative only because it was our 5th wedding anniversary.
Have been going to Yama for years and as always the food is amazing but the last two times it has taken over an hour for them to bring out any of the ordered sushi rolls.
It's a very pleasant spot. For the most part the food was very good. Perhaps the only disappointment was the uni which might have been a bit fresher. But it's very agreeable. We had the black cod which was excellent.
We love dining here, it's one of our favorite places.
We love the food and general vibe of the place. The rolls are amazing and hard to pick a favorite. If you like sushi, we would highly recommend Yama.
I love Yama Sushi. I used to live in SE Portland and it was a regular haunt. Now that I live outside the city, it's a special treat. Their Kobe beef roll is unbelievable. One of my favorite things on their menu. And I also really enjoy their house sake. Their food looks and tastes so clean. Fabulous place!
Nice mix of sushi and cooked food. My kids like this place, and they are picky. They order the miso soup, karaage, sushi rolls, and salmon teriyaki. I like the razor clams. Great ice cream across the street at 50 Licks for dessert. Lively crowd of families, 20-somethings, date nights. This is a great neighborhood izakaya. However, the ramen is not as good as at two Japanese chains that have spots in town (broth is decent, but noodles don't quite stand up).
Our friends did not steer us wrong when they sent us here.
Everything was amazing!
Food is good, but we've been there twice and the service could be much better.
The sake was delicious, and the servers recommendations were very good! The black cod was especially well prepared , and the salmon roll was also very good.
Try the lobster roll...
I have been to Yama twice, but this last time was hands down the best service experience I have had in Portland. Alex was our server outside and he was absolutely spectacular. He was passionate, knowledgeable, and he created a unique and enjoyable experience. He recommended two separate bottles of sake and educated us on the various types, flavors, how it was made, etc. Yama is great, the sushi was amazing, the sake delightful, and the experience one of a kind. It also happened to be my birthday which made it that much more special. When I come back to Yama, I will ask for Alex to serve us every time. He was the best!
Awesome, excellent sushi and perfect service. It was quiet, but we were a bit early (7pm on a Thursday). Sake flights and everything you could want, including scallops 4 ways (my favorite!)
This has been our go-to family friendly sushi restaurant, but sadly this past visit wasn’t a great one. Our server was wonderful and helpful, but the food delivery and food quality fell flat.
Our daughters commented that their usual rolls seemed smaller than usual. Still pretty tasty, but not the same. And while the rolls came out in a good amount of time, our sashimi platter took an additional 30 minutes. So my husband and I sat there waiting while our girls finished their meals. And then they finished and waited along with us.
Our server checked in with us a couple times to let us know the delay was due to the fact that only one sushi chef cuts the sashimi. Ok. I get it. Special levels of sushi chefs. When our platter finally came we were ultimately disappointed in the overall quality of the fish. Some pieces were chewy and some had little flavor. There were a couple good pieces, but when you spend $40 you kind of want all of it to be great.
We figured we would be compensated for the inconvenient wait time, but nope. No free basic roll, no free drink, nothing except an apology.
We’ll be exploring other sushi places before trying this one again.
What a find! Had no idea the restaurant was here. Such gracious staff, food presentation was photo worthy and then delicious!! Unlike in many restaurants, I felt relaxed enjoying my food without constant "how is your food" overkill. Our waitress was available, but gave us time. I will be back...with more friends!
We love the sushi and the ahi tower is incredible. It would be nice if the bar menu was more versatile- great sake options but wine and other spirits are lacking.
We come here once a week. Sometimes we catch the happy hour which offers good selection of items. Fish is fresh and we tried the top half of their ala cart sashimi, all good. Service is good for the most part, sometimes can be slower but if you come with no rush attitude, you will love it!
I was on a business trip here in Portland and found this gem of a sushi restaurant. The food and presentation is wonderful, the service is impeccable. Definitely a must!
We live just around the corner, and it's nice to have a sushi restaurant so close. Sushi is always fresh and they have a good selection of fresh fishes and creative specialty rolls, along with friendly wait staff. The hot food is excellent, our favorite is the light crispy tempura and the kimchi ramen.
We always enjoy eating there. It's our celebratory place to go!!
Yama continues to have some of the best sushi in Portland. Always great service. Our favorite PDX Izakaya
Awesome. Everything was delicious. Tried the Salmon Skin roll for the first time. Best in town.
Delicious! The waiter was so nice and the rest of the staff too. The food was amazing. Great presentation and very accommodating for my gluten free diet. Highly recommend this place!
Terrible food! I sent back several items. Low quality! I can't believe people like this place. Perhaps they have never had amazing sushi or been to a great izakaya. Very disappointing!!!
Yama is hands down the best sushi and Izakaya in Portland Oregon. Fresh fish, innovative combinations and tasty ramen.
Definitely worth it to make reservations. We got seated immediately and we were not pressured to eat quickly and leave. The food was excellent, fresh and as described. And a great value compared to other sushi restaurants in the PDX area.
Amazing ramen and excellent sushi.
The quality of the fish was fantastic.
