I REALLY wanted to love Torishin. However, there were real issues with both the FOH and BOH that stood in the way of me doing so:
1. The server up-sold us drinks we didn't want. We asked for two cheap glasses of Sochu to try out something we were mildly interested in. She brought us a carafe and started pouring as soon as she got to the table. She spilled a little on the table, then panicked and brought a glass from elsewhere and left the carafe and glass with us saying "on the house". Later a $36 carafe appeared on the bill. The two glasses we had actually ordered would have totaled up to $12. I have a real issue with this practice, whether intentional or not.
2. We ordered the omakase, specifying we wanted off cuts. We received: Chicken Thigh, Chicken Breast, Pork Belly, Chicken Meatball, Chicken Oyster (actually thigh again) and Chicken Kneecap, none of the artery, heart, gizzard, or skin that we were excited about. Aside from getting the "safe" cuts, almost every dish was a little under seasoned, with the thigh and breast both being slightly overcooked. The rice/soup dish was an unimpressive hodgepodge served at the wrong point in the meal. Soup should be served first, and for the love of god keep the rice separate. Feels like an attempt to hide bad rice cooking technique. Also, a $40 uni app was NOT cooked very impressively and served with mediocre bread. If you have the guts to charge that much for an app...make it good. I'll take good technique over gold leaf any day chefs.
These complaints coupled with a $300 ticket price were just too much for me to reconcile. It just felt like the wrong format for Yakitori. Consequently, it felt clumsy and unimpressive, but that didn't make them come down on the price. They lost their Michelin star this year. I hope they consider reinventing their service. There is a lot of potential here, so if they do, I might be back. However, with all the options available for truly good Japanese, I doubt I will be.
Amazing service, unique and delightful chicken-based dishes to try. I was not a big fan of the gizzard/liver, if I could do it over I would probably request no organs (with the exception of the heart).
Long wait to be served. Food was slightly bland, didn’t live up to our expectations
I made some changes on my reservation for Sunday Nov 7, and the staff was very accommodating, We enjoyed the food very much! I will definitely be back again.
The service of the restaurant was excellent.
Chicken was so fresh and juicy!
Especially, Chicken oyster was so juicy.
May be no1 popular.
Everyone likes this.
Outstanding food and sake. An amazing experience. Love it...
The food quality has noticeably deteriorated since my last visit. It appears that in both the preparation and the cooking of the food there has been a lapse in attention to detail. While the food remains very good, I hope the quality can continue to be maintained at its previous high standard.
Food was beyond expectation. That uni was awesome.
The service was disappointing: 1. We put a note of "husband the "occasion" also got confirmed over the phone, and the receptionist even suggested candles, etc. However, no special prep was made at all when we arrived.
2. When the server poured soju, something dropped to the cup. She apologized, taking the cup away, and retuned with an empty cup - that whole cup soju was wasted and she didn't even explain.
Food is absolutely amazing, as always.
Food was spot on, the set menu is brought out in just the right order and the pricing for at least a couple of hours and the presentation and attention from staff was on point with a second Michelin star.
Reasonable price for Omakase!!
We're satisfied with service and yakitori.
Rather too much sameness among the various skewers. And more mild flavors than I expected.
Who knew that a chicken focused restaurant would be so wonderful? Omakase menu was wonderful, staff was great, will definitely be returning soon.
This is one of the very best yakitori reatauranta in the world. The flavors are absolutely authentic and the quality is extremely high. One of the very best dining experiences in NYC.
What's a memorable event!
The service is very nice.
Yakitori skewers are very tasty.
Torishin deserve The Michelin Star Restaurant in the USA.
Food overall was very tasty however a bit over priced.
Wonderful place. Great attention to detail and excellent service. Very deserving of Michelin star. Food was delicious. Nice ambiance and well laid out eating area.
Food was good but mediocre for 1 Michelin star. Better meal and service in a good izakaya in any part of Japan. Michelin rating is useless
The restaurant has good reviews and a one star Michelin. The service was excellent and we had a lovely lady helping us. The restaurant itself is small, very noisy, the tables are very close next to each other and our neighbors were speaking loud so we couldn't hear each other. We chose the omakase. We had so much chicken it was overwhelming. We had 8 rounds of chicken, some very chewy and bony and others not very tasty. It was too much chicken and little variation. The dishes were also sometimes a bit too cold. The wine was not chilled. All in all very disappointing at a huge expense.
Every skewer was perfect as usual, but they should offer wider space for customers at yakitori counter. Tight space make us feel umconfortable and seems tightfisted despite authentic atmosphere and awesome dishes.
Great meal and great service. Everyone is so attentive and friendly. Love Torishin!!
Terrible service and very mediocre yakitori. For a michelin star restaurant, I expected way more.
Wonderful cuisine and service. Really a special experience
The server was very patient with us, as one of our guest was late by an hour.
The maitre D was not as patient and told us we have only an hour and a half to eat our meal.
We understand that the restaurant is small and did NOT intend to be late, sometimes things happen at work.
The server made ALL up to us by providing a special treat for my birthday celebration, and we also ordered
alot of Sake to drink while waiting for our last guest.
All in all the restaurants server saved the day for ALL or us!
We wanted to share the experience with our friends in from LA, and they loved the restaurant!
We will of course be back.
tasting menu was very good but next time will order a la carte for more vegetables.
Delicious and reasonable price! Service is satisfactory.
Good food and service!
Authentic Japanese restaurant! I love it!
One sad point was that there were so many children that it was noisy.
skewers are great! I like the organs.
Absolutely wonderful place to dine with friends. I will definitely come back soon
Worst Japanese restaurant ever!
They look like traditional Japanese restaurant, but the food was terrible and their service was very bad.
I do NOT understand why they have one star Michelin. It must be mistake.
I do not recommend this restaurant at all.
A lot of misses on the menu and more expensive than your normal Izakaya, such as a $6 rice.
A lot of interesting things are only available as omakase and it requires the whole table to get it. I guess u can't eat those skewers without a certain order? But all the other skewers are fine all come together? Hmm....
Don't go, and spend your money elsewhere wisely.
Really friendly staff who made the occasion special. Many thanks
Yakitori places are few and far between in NYC, but this place is a gem. Delicious soft bone cuts which I crave! Side dishes were so yummy too! I will be back!
The food is amazing and the service is nice. It derserve the Michelln Star.
Delcious every time and impeccable service.
