Permanently Closed - XyZ Pintxos y Botanas is a new partnership between Chef Javier Ortega and entrepreneur Maricruz Rosas, that brings their two families together to recreate the comforts of eating at home amongst friends. In the heart of the East Village of New York City, the casual and convivial dining experience of XyZ will remind visitors of the pintxo and cider bars in Donostia, San Sebastian, as well as The New Basque Cuisine that have inspired Chef Ortega.
Set in the warm and intimate atmosphere designed by contemporary artist, Ray Smith, husband of Ms. Rosas, the proprietors have chosen to focus on evolving something unique that fuses the creative aspects of food and art.

                                                                                  The pintxos are good but the squid ink paella was not good. It was burnt from below and quite salty. Goes to show how one should not order a valencian dish in a basque restaurant

                                                                                  Stumbled upon this gem a few months ago, and have been gushing about it ever since. Delicious Tapas, intinmate and inviting setting. Great for place for a small gathering.

Paella nigra was burned (most of the rice in the bottom had charcoal flavor)and very salty, not so much in it. The food was expensive considering the quality. Service was Ok.

We had wonderfully prepared croquettes, grilled prawns, mixed cheese plate, patatas bravas to pair with a delicious rose wine recommended by our server. Wonderful, authentic tastes of the Basque country and Spain! Great ambiance to get together with friends for a long dinner!

                                                                                  Ordered paella for 2 at 7:45 while waiting for table Seated at about 8 Ordered small plates while awaiting main course 9 PM paella had not arrived Several entreaties to keep us in the loop as to the progress of the paella did not speed up the process. Went back to the kitchen to find out that it was just being prepared. Requested check and left despite being told it takes a long time to prepare, it is about to come out etc. Never do this, but it just seemed appropriate given the fact that they clearly forgot about us and there was no explanation, apology, just stalling and a lack of professionalism. Felt badly as this was not in my usual repertoire of behaviors, and the small plates were delicious. Sorry for the negative review, but thought it was necessary given the above incident.

The food is authentic and delicious and it is my top 8 in New York City for sure!! They owners truly make you feel at home! I am really looking forward to going back to eat there again!                                                                                   This is an adorable spot in the East Village, with great Spanish tapas and wine. While it is very tiny, they were great about accommodating our party of 9 for my birthday. We ordered most of the tapas menu to share among our group, and was pleased with everything. The paella was not the best I've ever had, but overall, it was a good experience.

                                                                                  Group of 4 shared several tapas plates and the oxtail tapas with truffle potatoes was a favorite. Spanish wines by the glass was a nice compliment. Intimate and friendly setting.

                                                                                  Group of 5 friends on a Saturday night. Not a huge place but comfortable seating - Not always and easy combination to find. Everything we ordered was delicious! Started with a few dishes, then ordered more of what we loved as well as tried a few other items. Pleased with it all, as well as the wine and sangria. Sangria was just right. One glass is a very generous portion, try it. The staff were lovely and I would definitely return!

                                                                                  Small narrow restaurant with great chefs. Each dish was very representative of basque cuisine and very tasty. Wine list was not extensive but had some good value selections that went well with the food. I have been back since my first visit once so far and plan on taking a larger group back in the future. Both servers I had were friendly and informative. I would estimate place holds twenty five people at max. I ate early so it was about half full which was fine with me.
